AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Her note taking for pennies is very strange, but as you have not mentioned giving her any money at all towards bills, I’m assuming you haven’t. If you know she’s careful with money, I’m really not getting why the first time she said about the five minutes you didn’t counter with ‘would it be ok if I just gave you £50 to cover my water for the weeks, I don’t want to be timing my showers, but obviously I don’t want you to be out of pocket for me staying here.’ If she’s had to resort to this, could it be as a result of you not offering upfront - which is possibly just as strange as the note taking depending on your history.

Do you pay water rates or have a water meter in your own home ?

I remember many many many years ago moving from London to Devon, our water rates were £16 p.m. in London and you can imagine my surprise to find it was... £55 ! p.m. down here in Devon - we went onto a water meter very very quickly !

However the SouthWest is prob one of the most expensive places for water in England ? and my current bill for the quarter is £330.

I suggest it's not the fact she has a combi boiler ( that's what heats the water ) but the cost of the water.

Edited to ask - is your sister on a water meter or on water rates ?

Im in agreement with PPS, instead of crying upstairs just give her some money towards the utilities. She’s being incredibly tight in one sense but at the same time she’s very generously sharing her space with you. Just over pay for your usage as a thank you.

Fiddlesticks1 · 21/09/2026 21:07

Totally bonkers.

Pedallleur · 21/09/2026 21:07

Not worth the hassle. Overpay her and shower yourself senseless until your credit runs out then repeat. Probably drive her nuts to hear the water running down the drain. Don't stay again if it causes you issues. And ask for a copy of her tariff so you know what to charge her if she visits.

Elsvieta · 21/09/2026 21:06

When you're back in your place and she visits, be sure to charge her the price of boiling the kettle if she wants a cup of tea.

roseymoira · 21/09/2026 21:06

How much would it be for a bath?

LittleGungHo · 21/09/2026 21:05

She is daft however just say I have been thinking as I am here for so long here is £50 per week to cover the additional bills and inconvenience.

Stops future tension and you know you are the bigger person

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 21/09/2026 21:04

Book yourself a hotel

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 21/09/2026 21:04

Honestly she's being ridiculous but if youre stuck there for a bit I'd give her £20 and tell her thsts for the month's showers

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 21/09/2026 21:02

Sounds like a bargain. Maybe have it really hot or a petty revenge?

narcASD · 21/09/2026 21:02

she sounds bonkers but if your staying rent free then I'd bung her £50 and ask if she'd like a weekly contribution to the bills, even if you gave her £100 a week that's still less than a hotel room for the night. What about food? Do you contribute to that or cook?

PrincessofWills · 21/09/2026 21:02

Why was the tap running while brushing your teeth?

Grumpyoldcat · 21/09/2026 21:02

I admire her frugality. Are you paying her for staying? Why not suck it up and give a £x a week.

TheChosenTwo · 21/09/2026 21:01

Bung her £100 a week for the time you’re staying with her, infinitely cheaper than any hotel and a goodwill gesture which should hopefully shut her up from any further comments.
she sounds annoying but then houseguests for weeks is also quite annoying!

arethereanyleftatall · 21/09/2026 21:01

whilst she is a bit batshit, I’m not sure why you haven’t just said ‘I recognise you’re saving me in to the hundreds of pounds by letting me stay here, so here’s £100 to cover my utilities whilst I’m here and shall I treat us to a takeout tonight’

Lifejigsaw · 21/09/2026 21:01

She sounds nuts but surely you’ve agreed to chip in for utilities while you’re there? Just bung her £20 for showers and tell her to go away

Bunnyofhope · 21/09/2026 21:00

Is this extra to what you are already paying her or are you not paying her at all? If it's extra, she a right tight piece. If you are not paying at all, that title goes to you!

Mouldemort · 21/09/2026 21:00

I don't think she's quite right, but I would just pay her some money towards groceries and bills for your stay. Say £100.

Petrolitis · 21/09/2026 20:59

Is she actually called Karen or is that just some misogynistic bullshit?

BigWig78 · 21/09/2026 20:59

Tbh it’s quite rude you’d go and stay there and not offer to cover costs as a minimum. Sister or not. I hope you got your own food plus paid for household groceries etc.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/09/2026 20:58

I agree with pps.

Give her £20 and say “that’s me covered for showers for X length of time” (whatever it would be for a proper decent shower each day plus a bit extra)

Now don’t be telling me to limit my showers or tapping on the door because you’ve been paid more than the going rate. If you want us to have any relationship as sisters going forward, you need to let the showers drop.”

Or just move out.

GentlemanJay · 21/09/2026 20:58

She sounds like a right laugh. Lol.

RandomCactus · 21/09/2026 20:58

Have you offered her any money for the weeks you’re staying with her? I get the impression that you maybe haven’t, and she’s annoyed and expressing it this way?

IHaveAFeelingWeAreNotInKansasAnymore · 21/09/2026 20:58

I would probably just give her £20 per week towards the hot water while staying there so she gets off your case.

Her house, her rules i guess.
