Am I unreasonable to resent my husband's work from home desk taking space?

I live in a 3 bed flat with husband, 5 year old and 1 year old daughter. We have a big bedroom and 2 other rooms that are fairly small. The plan was for my girls to share a room initially (can fit two beds or bunks) and leave the other room for a play room / dressing room for them. If them sharing doesn’t work out we’ were going to move baby into own room. My husband recently got a new job and annoyingly it’s mainly hybrid (turns out he’ll be working from home most the time)
it’s good because he’ll be able to do school pick ups etc more but he needs a big desk for 2 monitors+ laptop. Am I being unreasonable to find it annoying? I am just not keen on all his work stuff taking over our flat and him not being able to switch off as easily. Also would it be better to put big desk in our bedroom or cram into kids playroom do you think? We spend most the time in lounge so don’t want it there. Any tips for making wfh feel less intrusive and desk that keep things organised but don’t take up so much room/ look nice?

You can wall mount the second monitor to reduce the desk size

Big desk in your room. Working from home is a gift. I'm a teacher and I have no flexibility. My husband works from home and does school drop offs and pick ups, dentist, doctor appointments etc. It has been a life saver.

It’s not ideal in any scenario but you might just have to make the best of it. We are in a 2 bed flat and we both work from home with 1 DD. My husband has a big desk in our bedroom with 2 monitors. I have a very small desk with just enough space for a laptop and a mouse in DDs bedroom with a desk chair that tucks in neatly underneath. It’s not great but as DD is in wraparound care I don’t work when she is at home so we make it work.

MadKittenWoman · 25/09/2026 15:53

Monitors don’t actually need to be on the desk. They can go on arms which attach to the desk and swing out when needed. DS needs 3 monitors but his desk isn’t huge as he’s in a room in a house share so space for working has to be in his bedroom. Ikea has lots of desk options in their office section which could work in a bedroom. If your bedroom is large you could screen it off so it’s less obtrusive in non-working hours.

For a desk in the living room consider wall mounting a 32inch Frame TV on the wall for the monitor. When not in use and in art mode the frame tv (especially if styled well) really blends in and looks like a piece of art

No point resenting the job if it allows school pick ups! Flexible working is great if you need to do school/nursery runs.

I'd definitely put the desk in the master bedroom. Have you thought of something like this? It fits two screens

That second picture 😆

Another click bait post for home office furniture?

Seem to be on the increase on a lot of sites and blogs.

Throwntothewolves · 22/09/2026 21:39

Could he get a corner desk to accommodate the two monitors and minimise the floor space taken up?

ReadingSoManyThreads · 22/09/2026 21:15

He doesn't need a big ass desk. My DH works from home full-time and has 2 monitors plus 2 laptops and his desk was my sewing machine table before he stole it from me isn't big, it's no more than medium size and it also fits a printer on it. In fact, I've just gone and measured it and it's 115cm x 77cm. He doesn't have a big ass chair either, just a normal kitchen table chair from ikea.

Does baby go to nursery? When my LO was little I had my desk for wfh in his room because when I was working he was at nursery. And because he was in a cot any wires etc didn’t matter.

Crispautumnday · 22/09/2026 20:43

He needs to have a room thats his study so he can work properly at home
The girls can use the sitting room as their playroom

Has he looked into renting a private office space? So its solely his. We

Cant imagine the mornings or afters afterschool and holidays will be much fun
And as PP said, hes going to end up spending up to 15hrs a day in there.

Yes, I was going to suggest this. Is renting an office somewhere closeby
an option?

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 22/09/2026 20:35

kids share room, smallest room becomes office. no brainer. kids aren't at the age of needing own rooms and having an office in bedroom is a seriious killer - it's like being a student again. you are adults. you need work space. your kids do not need a room each, or a playroom. the front room is their play room, or their bedroom. they are not teenagers with a need to be separate from you,

blackteaplease · 22/09/2026 20:33

I wfh from a very small desk in our bedroom. I use my laptop screen and a second screen and it's fine. DH is a teacher so he and the kids are home all holidays and working from the bedroom means I can shut myself away from them and they can use the house however they want.

I don't have any issues with working and sleeping in the same room

croydon15 · 22/09/2026 20:23

You are bu as you like all the advantages of your DH working from home but not any of the disadvantages, when wfh he needs a quiet space large enough for his needs.

He was led to believe there would be more opportunity to use the office but turns out there’s not enough space so they all have to rotate. I am also wondering if our bedroom might be best also because if we have play dates / guests then they are less likely to be in our room..

Think about the positives. He can do pick ups that must be a saving in childcare etc. I think that yes the desk maybe a bit of a pain but the flip side is better. Stick in your bedroom and stop moaning

Weekmindedfool · 22/09/2026 19:46

Move to a bigger house.

Tuesdayschild50 · 22/09/2026 18:51

Cupboard desk in your bedroom maybe .

FirmSnake · 22/09/2026 18:34

I'd scrap the playroom and have an office instead. Do they actually use the playroom at those ages or is more just storage?

BeddysMum · 22/09/2026 18:28

2 monitors doesn't have to take up a huge amount of space. I've done it with a bureau before!

Is it 2 external monitors PLUS his laptop monitor or will that be closed?

I found it worked well to use laptop and second screen above laptop screen on the bureau shelf.

Screens can also be wall mounted! There are lots of options here.

MiddleAgedDread · 22/09/2026 18:14

The worst thing about hybrid and WFH is that it’s been effectively forced upon many of us without us actually having the space to do it! I literally can’t get in the office full time as there aren’t enough desks for anyone and if you don’t book well in advance it’s full so you can’t change plans at short notice. I’ve made it work but it’s not ideal, but I also can’t afford to somewhere with a dedicated home office space. Lots of our younger staff
live in shared flats and need more days in the office or they really don’t have space to work.

Aubin7 · 22/09/2026 18:06

Screen or room divider?

KarmenPQZ · 22/09/2026 13:00

What would your plan be for school runs if he had to go into the office every day?

Timeforachange26 · 22/09/2026 12:36

Sparrowsandbudgies · 22/09/2026 09:08

I’d want the kids to have their own bedroom over everything else - a 5 year old does not need to be woken up by a baby / toddler. I’d then plan it all round that.

They don't generally. Mygirls are 3.5 years apart. Neither woke the other

Sillysausage76 · 22/09/2026 10:57

Do you want your kids to share a room? Could you consider giving the kids the biggest room, so they can play in their, you and dh using 2nd and box room for desk and soring seasonal clothes so you don't need so many in bedroom. I guess the baby still plays in living room so perhaps the toys could go in box room for rotation
