Husband has never heard of HRT. I find it odd...

So I'm a woman of that kind of age and I've got a gynaecologist appointment next week and the doctor has brought up HRT before.

When I was talking to my husband over the weekend he had never heard of it 🙄Is his head really in the sand? I'm not expecting him to be fully read up on it but honestly his reaction was a bit like I'd just told him I was thinking of putting after sun on my sunburn 😅

He really had no idea and I'm not sure he gets hormonal changes when women go through the menopause. It's not that he is dim either, university educated, software engineer.

Not really an AIBU but isn't it strange he knows nothing about it?

Same with my mum - I only recently asked her when she went through hers. And I can tell you for nothing there's no way my MiL would have discussed her menopause with my DH.

Same here. I have no idea about when my mum went through menopause. I'd probably left home by then. I certainly wouldn't ask now because it's not relevant.

I didn't discuss mine with my DH either. There were more pressing things to discuss with child health problems and tbh my periods just stopped with little fanfare.
When I decided to try HRT I just did, no discussion necessary, although I told him I was going to try it. It stopped all my joint pain and gave me lots more energy so my DH said he'd like some too 😂

I know very little about the menopause as an educated, and reasonably well-read woman in my mid-thirties! Other than the stereotypes of hot flashes etc, I've never spoken to any women in my life about it - my mum's never really talked about it. I do know what HRT is and I imagine DH does but I don't think it's that unusual for people to be ill informed about menopause, unfortunately. I really should get prepared!

Stormyrose · 21/09/2026 11:00

I doubt my husband would know what it is, likely heard of it, but no more, and I can’t say I’m fully knowledgeable and sit and research when men should need their prostate checked etc, I struggle to see the issue here.

Why would a mum talk to her child about menopause? My mum made the odd comment about things she was going through but she wouldn’t have given me a talk about it or anything!!

I talk to mine about it. My mum suffered a lot but we never discussed why she was having such a rough time. I am glad I can talk to my kids about big life events.

Iamawomanofconstantsorrow · 21/09/2026 11:00

No one seems at all worried about what the OP puts on her sunburn... What's wrong with aftersun? Did I miss something @NoKnit ?

I would talk to other women about it, what use will your husband be? He'll know nothing and probably just annoy you immensely. Taking HRT doesn't really need support from a husband does it?

Taking HRT doesn't need support but menopause symptoms often do need support from the person you are living with.

Menopause can also seriously impact the person you are living with directly so it’s good to be able to talk about it.

Thinkofnewthings · 21/09/2026 10:58

Are you saying he hasn’t heard of HRT or hasn’t heard of the menopause or doesn’t know what it is? Does he know what the letters “HRT” stand for?

IPM · 21/09/2026 10:57

It's not that he is dim either, university educated, software engineer.

I'm not sure this doesn't make him dim given everything else you've said?

I know my husband gets a prostate test as I know the words I dont need to know all about it

An annual prostate check is really not an equivalent.

I don't remember my mum going through menopause and I know now as an adult she has never been on hrt and other than the occasional hot flush, menopause largely passed her by without note

I mean it is no big deal but you know I do sort of think it would be nice if he at least knew a bit about the changes going on. Just so I've got someone to talk about to it.

Well because her child will either go through it at some point or likely be married to someone who will have to go through it.

Of course as previous posters have mentioned some people sail through but lots don’t so it’s good to understand what is happening.

It’s a key life stage for half the population, it’s no different from talking to your kids about periods and I assume everyone does that.

It's not like it hasn't been on the news or on many people's agenda for the last few years. It's not like menopause (or periods) aren't talked about anymore. Companies have to have menopause policies now.

Does he have the same attitude to many things that impact you @NoKnit

RampantIvy · 21/09/2026 10:49

I have just asked DH (74) if he has heard of it. He has but couldn't remember what the initials stood for.

I don't remember my mum going through the menopause BTW. She had me at 40 so I would have been quite young at the time.

MagicUser1 · 21/09/2026 10:48

I'd be less concerned about him not knowing about HRT than I would be about him being totally oblivious to the reality of menopause. "The change" has been well referenced in a million different ways from being blamed for everything women think and feel to women lobbying for more recognition.

I would absolutely find it irritating if he's not willing to engage in at least some basic understanding of something you're going through. In the same way that if I got cancer, I would expect DH to pay attention to any treatment plan, tests I need to have etc. Or like I am paying attention to the current knee injury he has that might require surgery even though I'd never heard of this particlar injury prior to him getting it.

I’m a bit surprised about some of the responses, my Dad is in his 80s, my DH is in his 50s and my DS is in his late teens.

They all know what HRT is, because they have all lived with at least one woman who has gone through menopause and who has friends going through menopause.

Perhaps I overestimate how much people discuss things in their families?

Even before I hit perimenopause I had friends going through and my DH had friends whose wives were going through it so the subject was discussed.

My mom's menopause was largely uneventful, so most of what I learnt about the menopause was through reading and my friend's experience.

Flippoflak · 21/09/2026 10:46

What do you expect him to know about it?

I'm a 46 year old female, and the extent of my knowledge about HRT is that some women start taking it.

PollyBell · 21/09/2026 10:45

My mum never used it is am not using yes i have heard hrt mentioned most days of my life as the world seems obsessed by it

Buf to be perfectly honest all I know about it ia the excuses people use it for acting badly towards people, the world has gone mad for it

name89243 · 21/09/2026 10:44

I was shocked by this, but then asked DH. He was like "huh? what's that??"

But then he found out it stands for "Hormone Replacement Therapy", and he's like oooooh right.

So what if you didn't use the abbreviation? 😆

only if you had bad symptoms that were affecting you. I think it's the "in-thing" to moan about now because Gen X (like me) are going through it now while struggling to work and raise kids. (who doesn't like a good moan though)

That's what I mean.
I have HEARD of HRT.
I have never used it because as far as I know I have never needed it.
I wouldn't expect a male to have heard of a medication if it's never been part of his life before.

Needmorelego · 21/09/2026 10:33

I've never needed to see a doctor about anything to do with my menopause though?
Am I missing something? Was I suppose to go when my menopause started?

I’m a bit surprised it hasnt come up in conversation before now if you have got as far as making an appointment. He must have noticed your symptoms ?
