To be disappointed Dolly Parton supported biological men using women's toilets?

I really liked her music and she seemed like a nice person: her Imagination Library came to my borough recently. I was very sad to hear she'd died.
But was very disappointed to read this. The statements she made about trans people deserving respect, no issue with those.
But minimising the reasonable concerns women have about being forced to let men in their toilets was wrong.
I'm not saying she should have spoken out for GC issues. It might have been best just not to comment.
Parton had connections with drag queens and I wonder if that's the lens she saw transwomen through : not an excuse but might partially explain.

I think @Keeptoiletssafe is really clear on why floor to ceiling doors on gender neutral loos are more dangerous (can’t see if someone is having a medical emergency etc).

I, personally, think their case is far less convincing on why trans women using women’s toilets is dangerous.

Transwomen. What sex does a person have to be to be in that ideology to be regarded as a transwoman? Common or garden male is the answer. So the question I suppose is why males coming in and out of women’s toilets, or other confined spaces where women are undressed or vulnerable, could possibly present any danger to the women and girls using said space. Males commit the vast majority of all sex offences, and the majority of their victims are female. That is over the comfort and dignity aspect.

Then, as you say, if the design was changed, I think Keeptoilessafe outlines the problems that eschewing the more considered safety measures can cause.

We agree that men (I would say cis men) are the biggest threat to cis women. Guess who else they’re the biggest threat to? Trans women.

Men who want to harass / assault women in toilets don’t need to go to the trouble of disguising themselves as trans women to do so.

Katie Dolatowski assaulted a 10 year old girl in a supermarket toilet.

They’re just men. We can’t tell the nice ones from the bad ones until it’s too late. Cosplaying men included. Nice men also have to stay out of women’s spaces FYI for privacy and dignity reasons. Trans women don’t automatically get absolved of risk because they deem themselves to be women. The last two trans women I met were sex offenders incidentally.

You’re statistically unlikely to ever get burgled in your lifetime but I bet you still lock your doors at night. If a burglar wanted to burgle you they’ll do it anyway hey. It’s called safeguarding.

Male violence upon other males is not a women problem to solve. Campaign for males to be more accepting of gender non conforming males in their spaces.

Because males commit 99.5% of all sexual assaults and 100% of rapes. And “transwomen” are male.
Why do women have single sex spaces? Why are Oxfam fighting to implement single sex spaces in India and Pakistan? Are they transphobic? Are Oxfam wrong to say no males should be in female spaces?

Sorry for cross post. @Keeptoiletssafe has more expertly, and eloquently, outlined the issues of male encroachment in female single sex toilets.

I really don’t get the angst some people have over trans people and toilets. I don’t think I would even notice whether a trans woman was in the ladies toilet or not . They are cubicles. So it doesn’t bother me either. She is allowed to disagree with you. If that affects how you see her after her death that says more about you than her.

Well, I think it is more males. I suspect if a woman in a female single sex space, claimed to be a man, other women wouldn’t be bothered with her as they would know that she is a woman.

So you’d have to wonder why it is deemed appropriate for men as a sex use other facilities, at all? For anything, ever.

There is that Scottish FOI about changing rooms in swimming pools. All sexual assaults, rapes, secret recordings of women getting undressed were carried out in mixed sex changing rooms. And, the direction of travel seems to be making women to only have the option of mixed sex changing rooms. It’s certainly not for the benefit of women and girls, isn’t it? I bet those women didn’t know they were being secretly recorded. A male in any female single sex space turns it into a mixed sex space. A man doesn’t disappear, or become a ‘not man’ when he claims he magically is not a man.

There are many examples of men who go into women’s toilets taking pictures exposing themselves. Examples of them attempting/or unfortunately succeeding in sexually assault the women and girls using what are supposedly safer single sex facilities. Thankfully many women are now making sure these things are getting reported on.

So, when females have to share with males, they are open to male perversions, and unfortunately the strength differential means women are at a great disadvantage. And, that is not great when you are undressed, and/or in a particularly vulnerable situation. That is over and above straightforward comfort and dignity.

Oh yes. Does make me giggle though. “Oooh tell me again why women don’t want men in their spaces”. And the best “I’m GC as they come”. Until they get pushback. Been reading the threads about the reasonable TRA. Maybe some of the TRA might benefit from a read.

oh yes, quite a few TRA do, and get their arses handed to them by the very clever and knowledgeable women on here. Usually spotted by the use of words “screeching, hysterical, bigot, transphobe” and mansplaining to women why giving up their rights to sex based spaces is for the greater good. But you know this. We all know you know this.

How do they get away with threatening rape?

Is the “WE ALL” some sort of committee?

Who can join?

Chance would be a fine thing explaining why women shouldn’t have the right to single sex spaces. I’ve asked a few times now but still tumbleweed from the modern all the waves feminists. Just the usual predictable moaning about the FWR board 🥱.

People who believe women should not have sex based rights or be able to define themselves without reference to men. Usually smug, misogynistic arseholes who think threatening women with rape, violence and death for saying no to men is a good look.

So it doesn’t bother me either. She is allowed to disagree with you. If that affects how you see her after her death that says more about you than her.

Cubicles have to lead on to a single sex environment. In a mixed sex environment, the toilet design has to change to become a room for privacy, leading ideally onto a busy thoroughfare for safety.

Cubicles with door and partitions gaps (up to 15cm from floor-door) then space above the door and partitions, are better for health and safety. Gaps provide ventilation, better cleaning, prevention of misuse and supervision in emergencies (medical, being trapped, building evacuation). This design has been replicated around the world in women’s and men’s toilet washrooms (which contain the sinks and dryers). Its economic, space efficient, time efficient with fastest turnover, healthier (eg. the previous occupants flush plumes are not covering the sink and dryer), and safer particularly for women, children and the medically vulnerable.

There’s not ‘angst’ it is common sense that anyone at their most vulnerable is better in a design that can only be permitted in a single sex environment.

If you add up all the conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies, asthma, endometriosis etc, its vital standard non-domestic toilets are in single sex environments. Then you add all the drug overdoses and self harm and assaults as well you really start seeing how safety can be designed in to create safer facilities.

That’s why so-called ‘inclusive’ ‘gender neutral’ toilets are a misnomer - they are often not a regulated design and are typically private cubicles leading out onto a communal mixed sex washroom. In my research the demographic they are least bad for is healthy men.

I agree.

NotNowFGS · 25/09/2026 23:31

Good grief I am not infantilising anyone. Or silencing anyone for that matter. Of course you can speak up if you disagree - I am here to have a conversation after all - But I am saying you are wrong.

As for the wilful misunderstanding I referred to the previous posters comment about herself prioritising her sons and suggesting I must be in a same sex relationship. No idea what she was on about there.

But wrong about what?

If a woman says she doesn't care if trans women are in her toilets, how can she be wrong? If she says she doesn't think a trans woman in the street poses the same risk to her or induces the same fear as a man, how can you disagree?

You can really wish that all women shared your views, but thise who don't aren't "wrong" and you aren't "right". It is just your opinion vs everyone else's opinion.

If you come across like you think women are stupid until we agree with you, then many of us will assume your view is problematic just because of that behaviour.

Who's not allowed a voice? Everyone on this thread has a voice.

The dead person who it's about doesnt.

Dolly Parton was a shining light and inspiration to millions.

She's dead now. What's the point of wasting energy being disappointed in her now? What's the point of the OP if not to start an AIBU bunfight, make Mnetters look bad or tighten existing purity spirals?

This thread does nothing to further feminism or women's rights. It's been milked like a lol cow.
