I think you did the right thing based on symptoms. And bad sinus infection can still be horrendous and have lasting serious effects.

Fever and that level of dizziness means treatment asap is needed/emerging sepsis needs to be excluded.

Sudofed shouldn't be used for more than a few days as it causes rhinitis medicamentosa (I.e. an increase of nasal secretions) if used for too long.

A GP would usually advise for him to be taking a steroid nasal spray eg. Beconase instead of sudofed.

But yes, he's hitting some red flags for sinusitis and you need to exclude infection penetrating deeper as soon as you can. Untreated sinusitis can (rarely) cause meningitis if it the infection deepens.

You did the best thing getting him checked out. Glad he is okay

@Wheresmymaternalinstinct must be doing around as I had the killer sore head for a week couldn’t figure out what it was . I would never have thought my sinuses as no sign . Antibiotics and I was feeling better a little over 24 hrs.
Next time don’t leave it longer than 3 days with these symptoms.

Trapped wind is awful. I knew of someone stretchered off a plane with severe abdominal pain, then she farted before she got to the ambulance. Oops.

I’ve had a sinus infection, the pain was awful, I thought my head was going to explode! Are/were you giving him the max correct does of all medications? ie not nurofen for young children, actual ibuprofen? I hope he feels better soon x

Did Caredoc middoc or whatever not see you. The person on the phone isnt a doctor. If they saw you they would have done checks. But err on the side of caution

Pain in cheek (especially if only one side) is usually a bacterial sinus infection. I had one last week and just finished antibiotics.

I was able to get them prescribed at the pharmacy but not sure if they can for under 16s. The trick is you need to say you’ve had it 2 weeks and stress the pain in only on one side and fever. Whenever I’ve had them, the antibiotics kick in after a day or two and I feel much better.

A lot of them symptoms can mimic sepsis. I had an awful one last year where the back of my neck, base of head had an awful pain and stiffness. High fever and shivering. The gp said if my fever didn’t go down I had to go straight to A&E.

Hospital without a shadow of a doubt. A fever, worsening headache and feeling like passing out.... were some of the symptoms I had with meningitis.

It's always better to check and be wrong, than not and it ends up being an emergency situation.

I know a few people where wind has put them in hospital lol sounds funny but it’s so painful sometimes !

Glad he's been seen. Recycled antibiotics (that shouldn't even have if people take the course correctly) is never the answer. Antibiotics are targeted to the bug causing the infection so a lay person guessing is just going to breed resistance and highly unlikely fix the actual issue (dr)

It’s so strange they say sepsis etc, in Ireland too and it’s always better safe than sorry, our gp will always say ‘better to go into a and e and be wrong than have something happen’. Sure Leo used to even say it, Simon Harris has said it!! Always better to go to a and e if there’s a chance it’s something

I know someone who died from a sinus infection after the GP assumed it was just the flue and he wasn’t given antibiotics.

Hes been sick 10 days and seems to be getting worse and you have not seen a doctor?! OK, I don't know where you are but by now I would have taken my child to a walk in clinic at the very least (US), the symptoms sound pretty worrying and go beyond a regular cold. The advice about using leftover antibiotics without a diagnosis is outrageous. Antibiotics are powerful drugs, not candy.

We once rang an ambulance (as advised by 111) when our 14 year old son had horrendous abdo pain - he was screaming/crying in agony - and normally he has quite a high pain threshold.

When the paramedics arrived, it turned out he had trapped wind, and once he'd farted things were a lot better!! 😅😆

This was all at around 3am.

I immediately thought sinus infection when I read your post. Your poor son, hope the antibiotics work quickly.

Ahhh I hate sinus infections they are awful!

if you are using a decongestant use pseudoephedrine not phenylephrine as the clinical data is miles better, but only for 3 days.

Head over a hot bowl of water / towel with vicks etc and massage the sinuses (you can google where to massage).

You did the right thing, 10 days no better and it was becoming serious. Always worth getting checked out x

I was going to suggest sinus infection. My DH had it over xmas one year. He'd been unwell but as a teacher carried on until the holidays.

He was extremely poorly and we were given an emergency appointment at 8am on boxing day, after a raging temp and delirious.on xmas day. He had all the symptoms of your son and it was infected and compacted sinusitis and he was given 10days of a stronger antibiotic.

Yeah, they can be really painful and horrible.

I think it's quite normal to feel better once you're in the hospital. I think it's psychological. It's safer there and help is on its way.
