AIBU to miss my sister's Moroccan wedding with an eight-week-old?

My Sister is getting married next year abroad in Morocco. I am due to give birth to my 2nd child about 8 weeks before. Our other child is 3yo.

Do you think it would be completely mad of us to go to the wedding with an 8 week old baby who’s only just had their first set of vaccinations?

Then there’s the whole fact we probably will be generally very sleep deprived too.

DH thinks we should just miss it and avoid the stress. I do obviously want to go but maybe it would be too much?

YABU - go to the wedding (with newborn, 3yo and DH)

YANBU - you should stay at home and miss the wedding.

Morocco is not a place to go with a new born baby.

Agree!

Roselilly36 · 23/09/2026 05:28

You don’t need to decide now, wait until the baby has arrived and then make a decision. Good luck OP, personally it’s not something I would have done after having my second baby, unfortunately he was not as contented as my first son. Do what’s right for you. Your sis will understand I am sure.

It is sometimes possible to have a two way audio-video link set up at the venue abroad for the ceremony using Teams or Zoom and a well positionrf laptop with it's webcam on a table. For those that cannot attend in person, it can be watched live from home.using a link sent to email accounts or to electronic calandars. My daughter did this. Some people on the Zoom link still dressed up, fascinators and all ( maybe usng an outfit they already had,) and had a glass of prosecco at home to toast the happy couple. They were able to speak to the happy couple via the link to congratulate them as well.

You are not being at all unreasonable to decline.
You will see photos at a later date. Save your money for time away at your convenience at your chosen destination.
All the best.

Bowies · 22/09/2026 20:38

I would go if I could, assuming everything goes straightforwardly and you all feel up to it.

AgentJohnson · 22/09/2026 16:38

It will be a PITA but I would definitely do it. I love travelling and hang out with similar types, so in my circles it wouldn’t be an issue. For a sibling I would try but it’s your call.

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · 22/09/2026 13:22

You can't be sure you'll have a passport on time, so you won't be able to book any flights or accommodation until you know if you have a passport which could be less than a week before the wedding! It's just a no.

Clearinguptheclutter · 20/09/2026 17:46

As you suggest I couldn’t commit until baby was here. You might have a difficult birth. Baby might be a non-sleeper like both of mine were. Passport may not come etc.

if none of those things go wrong however I don’t think it’s ridiculous

vaccines is a bit of a red herring I mean ideally they’d have them but they don’t “work” immediately the moment you get them and they’re mostly for diseases that have been almost eradicated thanks to vaccines

As a travel health specialist I would say consult your GP and a travel health nurse or doctor. There are additional vaccinations for Morocco plus the risk of mosquito borne diseases and food and water borne diseases that could put both mum and baby at risk.

GreenLemonade · 22/09/2026 12:48

No way. If it was a European country then maybe. But I wouldn’t take an 8 week old to a country with questionable hygiene standards and poor medical care.

desperatemum1234 · 22/09/2026 12:42

Sadly I would decline. As you say, you just don’t know how you and baby will be. Baby may come early or late, etc. I had terrible post-partum haemorrhaging for a couple of weeks, really scary. Even if all goes perfectly to plan, it is a difficult time.

TheAngryPuxie · 22/09/2026 12:24

I would politely decline. I went to Morocco once - never again. I was quite ill and wouldn't want to risk my children becoming ill too, but that's probably just because I'm an emetophobe!

estrogone · 22/09/2026 11:50

Hello HARD NOOOOOOOOO!!

Your 3 year old will pick up a bug before you even leave the airport, 3 days later your newborn will get it. You will be in MOROCCO not Milton Keynes - if you are lucky neither child will need medical care.

Sorry sis. See you for a slap up meal when you get back. Congrats x

Dutchhouse14 · 22/09/2026 11:41

I dont think you can really judge it until baby is with you.
You dont know yet if baby will be early or late, ie 10 weeks or 6 weeks or anywhere in between.
You dont know if there will get complications from birth , how baby will sleep etc.
Then theres the how quickly can you get a passport issue.
Obviously not ideal for planning but Id probably want to play it by ear, id really want to go to my sisters wedding if at all possible but would want to be able to pull out at the last minute if I just wasn't up to it.
Newborns are fairly transportable and breastfeeding feeding makes it easier. I wouldn't worry about germs etc and if breastfeeding then they will share your immunity but if course you cant be 100% sure breastfeeding will work.out either. Although if you successfully breastfeeding chances are it will be fine.

This is the important part and you are going to it. The destination wedding is just a party to celebrate their wedding.

i wouldn’t stress yourself about going with an 8 week old baby when you have already been to their actual wedding.

This post nails it.

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 21/09/2026 22:40

Personally I’d just say you won’t be coming now. Removes all pressure and any talk of letting them down last minute. You can wish them well and celebrate when they are back in Uk.
Too many variables. If baby 2 weeks late, you need c section etc.

Your sister your call. I wouldnt consider you unreasonable either way

Id also consider could you go and leave DCs with DH if you dont BF. Not saying you should or shouldnt but id consider my options and decide what I thought was best.

Even if she wasn't breastfeeding, leaving a newborn to go abroad would leave her baby highly distressed without mum.

If it was me i will not miss my sister wedding amd go on my own when my husband mind the kids at home.

And how would you breast feed a 6 week old from 1.5k miles away?

ETA and she isnt missing the wedding. I suggest you read the thread.

ThePoliteLion · 21/09/2026 22:11

Dear OP, from your messages it sounds like you don’t want to go. It is fine to not go! Your sister would understand, surely

August1980 · 21/09/2026 20:22

Hi OP, my sister got married in South Africa. My only sibling. We took our 8 week old with us, Flew out from London though, with a connection in JHB. No problems whatsoever. Airports/airport staff and passengers were very patient and helpful. I was feeding her myself on the way out but bottle fed on the way back! A week later. Much easier than flying with a toddler :) she is a nightmare now to do anything!!!!

BooBooDoodle · 21/09/2026 20:19

I wouldn’t do it but a lot of people do. Will you be early or late, will you need a C-section. 8 weeks after one of those and you’ll still be sore so is lugging baggage and kids about and walking through an airport something you need to do, what if you get knocked into? The seatbelt for the plane would go right over the wound area, sitting for a long time can be sore and risk of DVT? There are so many variables. There is that to factor in plus if you’re unable to breastfeed, you’ll have to think of bottles, formula and all that entails. It would be too much stress for me and I’d be concentrating more on establishing a routine and still recovering at home given the baby will only be 2 months and having a 3 year old.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/09/2026 19:56

I think you not going is wise, though a bit disappointing to miss out.

Baby might be late, or early.
Might sleep well or not
You might have pph and be bed bound for a bit.
Or a caesarian that doesn't heal well.
Might get a refluxy manic feeder.
You might get ppd, especially if under pressure to be ready to travel.
Or you could get lucky and get a chilled out regular feeding baby but 6-8 weeks will be too early to guarantee that for sure.

Registring, passport, travel plans, insurance, could all be tricky.

Exposure to a whole new set of illnesses. (Like when they start nursery or uni)

Too many variables.

She started planning but wasn’t 100% set on what was happening (as far as I knew anyway!). They didn’t know we were TTC. They would’ve actually made it later if they could so we could come but due to the heat of Morocco and other commitments it just wasn’t going to be feasible date wise before it gets super hot there.
She isn’t pressuring us to come and does understand. I’ve spoken with her now and let her know that I just don’t think it’s going to be feasible. I obviously would love to go so was quite torn really hence the thread.

We will go to their legal marriage as I’ve stated. To them their real ‘Wedding’ is the party abroad though.

Edited

I think you’re totally fine not going. Best for baby and you. Just responding to posters that think it’s absolutely ludicrous someone might delay TtC for a sister’s wedding! In my world it’s something I would consider 😊
