AIBU to think my husband did not go too far with the comment?

Husband and I have two boys. Our eldest has just started school this September and our youngest isn't even 4 weeks old. When we had our first, DH took 6 months paternity leave because his workplace offers it. He then spoke to work and took another 6 months unpaid. We got used to looking after our son and sharing everything, and honestly it was lovely. My side of family have never really understood it. A lot of the older women in my family made comments about why DH would want to take so much time off and seemed to think it was strange. His family are much more progressive about it. His dad actually said that if he'd had the opportunity to take a year off when his children were young he absolutely would have but it wasn't really a norm back the. Not saying it is the norm now but lots more places are starting to at least offer 6 months paternity.
We've now had our second baby and DH is doing exactly the same thing again 6 months paid paternity followed by 6 months unpaid. It works for us financially and more importantly, it's what we've both agreed we want.

Last week we went to my aunt's house. She's in her early 80s and was meeting our new baby for the first time.At one point the baby started crying and DH took him from me to settle him. DH too does a lot of the nappy changes, feeds, getting up in the night etc because we're both his parents and that's just how we've always done things. My aunt watched DH with the baby and said to him, "Isn't that your wife's job?"DH laughed and and carried on.
Her daughter, who is in her 50s, then joined in and started ranting at DH about how men and women have different roles, how he shouldn't be doing everything for me, etc. DH initially tried to laugh it off but she kept going and eventually he snapped.

He told her: "oh fuck off If you focused more on your weight nosey what I do for my family wouldn't matter to you." The room went completely silent. I was honestly shocked. I agree that she was being incredibly rude and I don't think there's anything remotely wrong with DH taking paternity leave or looking after his own children. But I also think bringing her weight into it was completely unnecessary.

DH says he doesn't regret saying it because she'd been going on at him for ages and he wanted to shut the conversation down. He also pointed out that she had no problem criticising our marriage and parenting while apparently being offended when he responded. I think he could have told her to mind her own business without commenting on her weight.

My family now think DH needs to apologise I have told my mum to just let it go if the aunt and her daughter are that upset about it, its not as though she sees my husband often. This is not the first time someone has snapped at the them, it happened over summer from a different relative.

Surely they should have learned as children not to dish it out if you can’t take it.

latetothefisting · 20/09/2026 14:40

Summer26woohoo · 20/09/2026 14:11

This exactly.

He didn't ask her to talk shit about his parenting and families choices. She didn't ask him to talk shit about her weight.

Both are wrong and are highly personal issues that are none of the other persons business. But only one was pushed to it and one did it voluntarily. So she is 'more wrong'.

this.

Yeah, ideally it would have been better if he'd just said 'How we parent our children is literally none of your business so can you please stop interjecting your unwanted opinion,' or even 'Oh, shut up Paula, nobody cares.'

At the end of the day, his comment was nasty and unncecessary, but so was hers - she was the one who both started it and continued it, she can't then cry about the way he ended it.

topcat2014 · 20/09/2026 14:40

Do the family live in a soap opera or something?

I'm 55 and my dad changed my nappy etc.

Admittedly the weight comment was probably not the right one to choose - but aunt shouldn't have dished out what she couldn't take.

sparklypinkgoblin · 20/09/2026 14:39

Your DH sounds a legend, OP! Ignore the Fat Police wobbling with indignation, your sly relatives felt they could criticise your choices as parents with impunity, yet a pithy comment about the visible results of their choices (fat slobs) is somehow unfair?
Let them eat cake !!!!🍩🍰

dontcookwontcook · 20/09/2026 14:37

Oh yeah you’re prob right
that’s why I found it so uncomfortable because it’s just bullshit
imagine making up a story that your husband swore and insulted your aunt and your aunt looked down on a man holding a child

strange stuff!

Then report if you believe it is not true ahah ? I do not think calling someone fat if they are actually fat is bad if they constantly berate you and rant to you.

He told her: "oh fuck off If you focused more on your weight nosey what I do for my family wouldn't matter to you."

Was that in front of your 4yo son?

There were no kids in the room other than baby who is not even a month old who he was trying to put to sleep and my cousin thought that should be my job and kept ranting at him

She was being unreasonable to go on about something that was none of her business but your DH should absolutely not have sworn at her and brought her weight into it. He should apologise for that. It’s not a “she did this so this escalation was ok” situation, they were both wrong in different ways imo.

roycroppersshopper · 20/09/2026 14:38

They both made personal attacks, hers dressed up in some sort of weird anti feminism / anti father's doing their share vibe.

They should both apologise. Or both not and leave it. I imagine she is gutted by his comment, I would be too, but she can't hide behind it and pretend she did no wrong.

Can understand why he snapped, he was pushed. Not his finest hour, but not hers either.

Anyone who wasn't there (other family) needs to keep their thoughts to themselves.

I don’t actually believe any of this. But in case it’s true, he was incredibly rude.

Sadly, he totally lost any moral high ground he had when he used such a nasty insult to counteract it. Of course they were out of order, but he was too in equal measure, if not more as he resorted to personal insults. I’d be annoyed with their rant but I’d be bloody furious with him too.

MaidOfSteel · 20/09/2026 14:34

Your husband lost the moral high ground, lowered himself, when he made the weight comment. He could have just said mind your own business.

I do not think fatphobia is worse than misogyny it is just facts he didn't make it up and didn't even call her 'fat' just said focus on your weight (she always says she is trying to lose weight to anyone that will listen)

He sounds absolutely foul

They sound like absolute fucking vermin so I'd still be on the side of foul over cunts like those two miserable bastards.

If someone commented on my weight I would just laugh. I do not think the comment is that bad, think there are worse comments than telling someone to watch their weight...... she is overweight and has been told even by doctors and other family members previously

They clearly do not like my husband, have never liked him so why do they care what he thinks is what I do not understand.

What does that have to do with it?

@RikthePoet of course it didn't, but I'm waiting for my roast dinner to cook 😁

I hope you realise

a) that's a woman's job

b) it'll make you fat.

NotABlessedFruit · 20/09/2026 14:34

Strong disagree. Both were personal attacks in a way. Retaliation like that was imho fully understandable and fair at that point especially since this wasn't the first time.

At minimum, there's no basis to assume Dcousin wasn't intending to personally attack.

ItsAlwaysTwins · 20/09/2026 14:34

What a strange family. Surely even 80 year olds are completely used to the fact that most men pull their weight nowadays.

And if my husband spoke to anyone the way yours did, he’d be an ex. What a dickhead.

MaidOfSteel · 20/09/2026 14:34

AWomanOfWealthAndTaste · 20/09/2026 14:34

Chat shit, get (verbally) banged.

None of them should've said what they did. He isn't the one who started it, and fatphobia isn't morally worse than misogyny. It is also true that he now has no moral high ground.

NotABlessedFruit · 20/09/2026 14:34

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 20/09/2026 14:30

The sexism is obviously completely out of order and needs to be challenged but it was expressed as an opinion - and yes, a stupid one. The weight comment was very clearly a personal attack designed to hurt someone.

That is why the weight comment was worse.

I felt uncomfortable reading your thread even before you got to the weight insult. It’s like you’re gushing and over compensating?

CaptianMunchen · 20/09/2026 14:33

As a dad was fully prepared to defend your DH but after the punchline it’s pretty undefendable isn’t it?

Your dad of the year has let his mask slip and presented himself as the cock Womble he is.
