Asked my Ex to buy a second pair of school shoes

My daughter is with me 60 percent of the time, 40 with her dad.
last year I was constantly getting phone calls late at night asking for her school shoes when she was staying at his and needing them the next day. I suggested several times he buys a second pair to have at his and he never did.
this year I took her get her shoes and she has reached a age where she is extremely fussy, we must of tried on about 30 pairs. Finally found a pair of hush puppies she approved of and found comfortable.
i sent him the link and said can you please purchase a pair so she always has a pair to wear whatever house she is in which we know she will like. He begrudgingly bought them.
he is now kicking off at me this morning as she has gone to his with school uniform for tomorrow and has MY pair of shoes not his, the ones he specifically bought. They are the exact same pair of shoes..
claiming it was a waste of money and he shouldn’t of had to buy any. FYI I buy 99 percent of her belongings and he has no issue in me buying her a phone etc and taking her on holidays etc, where he can’t be bothered to and would rather spend the money he has ( he is not struggling) on himself and his new partner on weekends away etc, he has never once suggested doing that for his daughter even before his partner was around.
I have said if he is that worried he can come over and swap them. Am i unreasonable to have suggested he bought a pair?

Yanbu. I’ve had this situation with late night or early morning stress multiple times with school shoes/trainers for Ds. His dad doesn’t buy him a second pair but it would be really helpful if he would!

I’d just grey rock him, don’t Justify, Argue, Defend or Explain (JADE) and if a text doesn’t need a response just don’t send one.

It's one pair of shoes. Most people have more than one. If it was trainers it wouldn't even be an argument.

Of course it wouldn't be an argument.

This is about all the adults involved, refusing to teach this child about responsibility when they're a pre teen, not an infant.

Portmore · 20/09/2026 12:30

Poor kid

Every single time your daughter forgot her shoes and had to go to school in her trainers and got told off by teachers and detention then SHE would have taken responsibility for HER shoes!!!! That is the answer not buying another pair for her to forget! SHE isn’t 4!!!!

Yes but throwing common sense at a problem isn't as easy as throwing money at it.

There are so many people who could remember the shoes here.

The child
The parents
The stepparents

And the OP is still refusing to tell us how old this child is, other then 'pre teen'.

QPZM · 20/09/2026 12:19

No, I think you're being silly.

What do you think parents do to help their child remember things when they can't afford to throw money at the issue?

Yes, they all forget things but this child also forgets to tell her dad to stop at her house when they're driving past on the school run.

Even when she can see she doesn't have her school shoes on her feet.

It's one pair of shoes. Most people have more than one. If it was trainers it wouldn't even be an argument.

Your ex is a dick OP.
My ex wrote ‘bought by daddy’ in DD’s school shoes.
Having doubles of everything is the solution to removing the need for communication and disputes.
YANBU in asking him to buy shoes to be used at his house.
My ex used to hold school clothing and lunch boxes hostage at his house, he got fed up when there was no reaction to his dick head antics.

But not his?

The bar for divorced fathers is so ridiculously low that the devil himself stubs his toe on it on the regular. It’s amazing how much so many of them still struggle to reach it, and how permissive society generally is of their fuckery.

I think it is a good idea. They’re not every day shoes. Tell him it’ll be one pair only when she grows out of these ones, he can pay for them and remember to pack them, you can return them.

QPZM · 20/09/2026 12:19

FirmSnake · 20/09/2026 12:03

Dont be so silly. We all forget things sometimes and this is a child. A spare pair of shoes is sensible.

I am remarried and no I am definitely not jealous. I am resentful on my daughters behalf that he puts so little effort into her but will to his partner

In that case then yes he’s being a typical man in that the women he’s shagging gets all his attention. Unfortunately you can’t change how he is and you will only make yourself miserable trying to. Your daughter will see what’s he’s like in her own time. You’re doing your best.

Blackraven17 · 20/09/2026 12:18

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 20/09/2026 12:12

I don’t see the need for two pairs of school shoes. If she’s old enough for a phone ( pa she’s not if she’s a pre teen ) then she’s old enough to remember to pack the correct clothes. You sound jealous of his new girlfriend. That’s not your business.

and her phone is a parent monitored basic smart phone with blocked access to social media . She only uses WhatsApp to talk to family and friends and has a daily limit on her phone

I got her the phone so I could contact her. As her father would not pass messages on to her etc

So make sure you do send them??? You're the grown up here...

You're right not to pin the responsibility on your daughter, but it is your responsibility.

But not his?

My problem is that if I didn’t send them or co ordinate in time or god forbid, I went out or was at work etc he wouldn’t think Independently to collect them despite driving past my house on the school run. So I would get late txts which is a pain in the arse . I don’t feel it is my daughters problem to have to think about as she is a child

Why is your daughter ringing you when she’s at his and realises she doesn’t have her shoes. Surely she should have let him know and he is the parent who has to fix the issue. (Come to yours to get shoes)

Edited

My daughter isn’t, he will or txt me

A really good bit advice I can offer is to pretend that you’re communicating with a work colleague or customer.

Take a second before you reply, take all the emotion out of it and keep things business like and to the point.

FirmSnake · 20/09/2026 12:03

QPZM · 20/09/2026 12:00

Oh stop it.

Honestly, you're going to have a very entitled teenager on your hands soon enough if she's not even expected to take responsibility for her own feet.

Dont be so silly. We all forget things sometimes and this is a child. A spare pair of shoes is sensible.

BriarTime · 20/09/2026 12:01

Blackraven17 · 20/09/2026 11:58

Absolutely. And it is so so sad as only the kids suffer. Never an issue for me to spend money and provide but god forbid he does. He had even said to my daughter how he shouldn’t have to buy her shoes etc last year when I had asked.

He’s not going to change, sadly. The shoes are a bit of a red herring, because if it wasn’t about them it would be about something else.

QPZM · 20/09/2026 12:01

How old is your pre teen?

11 or 12?

QPZM · 20/09/2026 12:00

Blackraven17 · 20/09/2026 11:56

Sorry but I do think her 40 year old father should be the one held responsible until she is no longer a child and under his care quite frankly .
she has enough to worry about without having to cart heavy school shoes to and from school .

Oh stop it.

Honestly, you're going to have a very entitled teenager on your hands soon enough if she's not even expected to take responsibility for her own feet.

FiveEightNine · 20/09/2026 11:58

Blackraven17 · 20/09/2026 11:46

I have said he can come over and swap the pairs if it’s an issue.. I just personally find it a bit pathetic . Not like anyone else in the household is going to be wearing them

Pathetic or not, just keep the straight face and the rule.
Keep it simple, so it won't be questioned and objectioned against.

I understand that having two pairs is generally making everyone's life easier.
You are winning in establishing the new normal.
You won't win in making him into less of an arsehole.

Blackraven17 · 20/09/2026 11:58

BriarTime · 20/09/2026 11:57

Tale as old as time. My father was the same and made sure I knew about it. He doesn’t think he should have to do anything from which you ‘benefit’ now that you’re no longer together, but it’s perfectly OK for him to benefit from you doing the mental load. Some men just hate their exes more than they love their kids. It’s not even about the shoes, it’s about the fact that he can’t separate the idea of you as his ex from his daughter.

Absolutely. And it is so so sad as only the kids suffer. Never an issue for me to spend money and provide but god forbid he does. He had even said to my daughter how he shouldn’t have to buy her shoes etc last year when I had asked.
