I'm going on holiday with another person. Last time we went, they had the much nicer accommodation and mine was very basic. This time, check in is at different times and they're insisting I have the first accommodation we can check in to earlier as I have pets and they think I should settle the pets in, and they have the second. I mentioned the other day that we should look at them both and this time its my choice to choose which I prefer out of the two. We can always go in the first at check in and move my pets easily to the second. This is something she agreed to and is now going back on her word. AIBU to be pissed off at this? I really don't want to go away now.

it all works out!

Why would you keep going away with someone so selfish? You could just not go. If you do and stay in the less nice caravan you will spend the whole time annoyed, if she does she will.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/09/2026 19:27

Not all allow dogs and pay extra for dog ones so surely you will only be able to stay in one of them. The dog one

Frankly, I wouldn’t want someone else’s pets in my accommodation. If they put their pets in it, then that’s what they are taking! Maybe don’t put the dogs in any caravan until sorted out which one is yours, otherwise YABU.

It’s a pet friendly caravan! Millions of pets will have already stayed in it! If you don’t book a pet friendly caravan then you won’t get one that’s ever had a pet in it! Same with pet friendly cottages etc

WhoPaintedMyRosesRed · 21/09/2026 09:24

@Chefpig Your 50 yo cousin was calling you a lazy cow!

When she said how he shouldn't be doing everything for you, etc

This might be the families issue rather than the length of time your H takes off work.

watchingthishtread · 20/09/2026 20:54

Who put her in charge?

Well she booked both caravans so presumably she is in charge as she is the lead booker for both.

I think it might be best in the future if they don't holiday together or book their own accomodation.

Clearly there are issues anyway as by my count there is mum and partner and OP plus dogs. If money is that tight or would rather be spent on nicer accommodation the solution would be to book one van - 3 bedrooms even, so each adult would have a room each.

custardcreme77 · 21/09/2026 01:08

I would think the caravan in a quieter location would be better for the dogs - less stimulus which could result in less barking - and nicer views for your good self.

Calmdownfolks · 20/09/2026 23:46

It sounds as though you should say you want the one nearer the beach and have done with it. Phone up and speak directly to the staff now in low season and they should be able to be specific about the choices. Your mother sounds selfish and used to getting her way so you just have to be direct and broach no changes to your agreement. I wish you luck and a nice holiday.

Marieb19 · 20/09/2026 20:57

Why don't you arrange to arrive later, when the second caravan will be available. Additionally, next year go somewhere without her. She doesn't sound like a pleasant holiday companion.

watchingthishtread · 20/09/2026 20:54

Chefpig · 20/09/2026 10:09

She's insisting I'm having the first one though. If I challenge it, I get shot down and a huge argument will occur making me out to be the bad person. When I challenged it earlier, I got told I have to compromise. Where her compromise is, I'll never know.

Who put her in charge?

I would make this the last joint holiday you have. Next time, book yourself a lovely caravan in a nice spot, no arguments, no sulking, just rest and relaxation for you and the dogs. Tell your mum that this will be the last time, because you are fed up of always having second best accommodation, regardless of which one of you is paying.

Agree with this, might as well just suck it up now it’s not like your miles apart

TheDenimPoet · 20/09/2026 20:36

You get whichever accommodation you've paid for and chosen. Whatever your friend says isn't relevant.

LAMPS1 · 20/09/2026 20:25

Tell her you need more space around you for the dogs as well as the closer proximity to the coastal path to walk the dogs.
So confidently say you will wait for that later check in thank you.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 20/09/2026 20:23

Very cryptic post.
Cheap AI job?

Clearingthedecks · 20/09/2026 20:23

I'm hoping the caravan in the middle is a lot nicer inside than the one by the coastal path!
Hope you a lovely time Op with your dogs which ever caravan you have🐾

SandyHappyPerson · 20/09/2026 19:47

Is this a haven site? If so you have to pay extra to know which caravan you are going to be in (locations wise), otherwise they only release the location details 24 hrs before, and you have to pay extra to have an earlier check in usually.

So if she has paid to choose the location, and the holiday is not starting tomorrow, then you may be able to log in and choose a different location.. if not and you have the accommodation details, call them up and upgrade to a silver dog-friendly caravan instead.

trying to make someone do anything when they have paid for the entire holiday is pointless though surely?

TwinklySquid · 20/09/2026 19:38

It sounds like you’ve always booked the carvans as a gift - if so, I’d expect them to get the nicer one.
If it’s too hard, just don’t go again next year. Not worth the hassle.

Just say no, it my turn this time,

weve already ageeed this and I would like to wait

then grey rock it

inwant to wait, my choice. My turn etc. over and over

GrantMyWishes · 20/09/2026 18:23

In view of the fact that you clearly think the position of the second caravan is better than the first, then just tell your Mum you'll have the second one, and that way she can get in first, have a cup of tea, and get settled, while you take the dogs for a walk after the journey.

Ilovelurchers · 20/09/2026 18:17

A summary of some salient points for those joining the thread now:

  1. This year mom has paid for and booked both.
  2. For the last 14 years OP paid for and booked both and let mom have the best one.
  3. Both are pet friendly.
  4. OP's mom does not mind OP bringing the pets in any way!
Ophy83 · 20/09/2026 18:15

Just say you want the caravan with the location near to the beach. Sounds like that would be best for the dogs in any event. Don't settle the dogs in to the other caravan on arrival, take them for a walk on the beach. Or arrive later if possible.

Ilovelurchers · 20/09/2026 18:14

It's lovely that you and your mom have such a strong relationship that you holiday together, pay for each other etc. Please don't let an argument about quality of accommodation spoil that - it's truly not worth it. Your mom won't be around forever, and she may not be well enough to holiday with you forever - this is honestly not worth falling out over.

We had our first family holiday with mom this year (dad had dementia for ten years - he sadly passed in January, so she is now able to travel). We let her choose the room she felt most comfortable in and I think we would always do that going forwards - being mor elderly, her needs around level of comfort, location etc are more specific.

That said, I can see that the second caravan you describe is much more convenient for dog walking, so I do understand why you would prefer that one.

Could you approach it with her that way? Rather than making it seem like a competition for who gets the "best" accommodation, just say you have looked at the location of both and the second offers great dog walking opportunities so it would be brilliant if you could have that one?

It's not worth an argument and a fall out, honestly. I hope you all have a lovely time away!

Mangoripples · 20/09/2026 17:51

Can’t you get the keys to both caravans when you check in as they were booked and are being paid for by the same person?

Autumnalseasons · 20/09/2026 17:42

Chefpig · 20/09/2026 11:01

I always actually pay for her to have a nicer van with terrace, but this time I actually thought it might be my turn to have the nicer accommodation/location. Even when we've stayed in hotels, of one room is nicer or has the nicer views, I always say she's welcome to it. Always. Just this once I was hopeful.

She does have very selfish tendencies though, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Edited

Here we go -

Mum I’m paying for the accommodation. Last year you had a nicer one, this year I’m going to see which one I prefer and you can have to other one. If you don’t want this / you can book your own. I won’t be offended.

Chefpig · 20/09/2026 10:40

Heres a bit more information;

The other person is my mother.

Each year I treat her and her partner to a break, which I go along to too and we stay in different accommodation (static caravans).

I book her the best accommodation there is and I have the cheapest saver accommodation as that is what I could afford. This year money is tighter for me and I couldn't afford to pay, so she decided to book and booked us two saver caravans. Dogs come with us as one has health concern I keep an eye on and medicate when needed.

One of the caravans this time is earlier check in and is in the middle of a block of caravans.

The other is at the far end of the park, caravans spaced apart, looks peaceful, with direct access to beach and abundant with wildlife. It's a brilliant location and the other is very meh. Sardine city!

Since we booked shes been saying we can have a look at both caravans and then I can decide which I want to stay in. Now she's saying I will be having the first one as the dogs will be settled in there with all their belongings, belongings would take all of two minutes to shove in the car and take to other location if I preferred it. Both caravans are pet friendly.

I'm just pissed off because I was supposed to have the choice of the caravan.

Surely you have to have which ever caravan is pet accommodation. They usually have some savers for pets and some that aren’t. I assume you haven’t booked two pet friendly accommodations.
