AIBU to ask for diabetes tests over recurrent thrush?

I’ve been struggling since July with what appears to be a bout of thrush that just don’t die. I use sensitive wash powder, don’t wear sanitary pads, sleep without pants on and don’t wash down there with soap, all the usual things. Initially I thought it was some kind of vulva dermatitis due to the horrendous heat over the last couple of months and just kept slapping on epaderm ointment and vagisil as it didn’t feel like typical thrush to me, but swabs confirmed I had a ‘light growth’ of candida (no other infections) so was prescribed a soft gel pessary and oral tablet and assured that would do the trick. I explained to my GP that I’d taken two oral capsules a few weeks prior (not at the same time!) to no effect or relief but they said try the pessary/tablet combo anyway. That was over a week ago, at first it seemed to be working and the soreness/itchiness was practically gone much to my relief, but tonight I’ve definitely felt the familiar stingy irritation returning 😭

I’m due back for a review on Friday and I honestly think I’ll scream if they just give me the same over the counter treatment. I’ve subsequently fallen down a rabbit hole looking for ideas to soothe/get rid, and I’ve seen quite a few people talking about being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with recurring thrush as their only initial symptom. I’m 5’2, 36 and currently at 11 stone, the biggest I’ve ever been due to some weight gain from previously being on anti depressants due to a health scare, so I’m wondering if it’s too much of a leap to ask for a blood test to check? Or should I ask for an alternative treatment despite them saying they wouldn’t prescribe anything different than what’s available at the pharmacy?

Recurrent thrush and excessive thirst prompted my request for blood sugar testing. Came back at 17nmol. Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Have not had a bout of thrush since I got my blood sugar under control.

Yes ask. How old are you? I ask because dependent on your age, vaginal atrophy may also be part of the picture.

Has anyone examined you? Even if they have, get them to have another look and check for lichen sclerosis. If a doctor isn’t specifically assessing for it, it can be missed.

@Colbinabbin no excessive thirst here, just the thrush! I’m glad to hear it’s eased up for you since. Did they take you seriously when you asked or was it a long process?

@OneLilacHedgehog I’m 36. I did ask if it could be something hormone related but they said that if that was the case, it would be a lack of oestrogen which is unlikely due to the type of contraceptive pill I take.

@Bobbie12345678 yes, when I had the swabs done I was examined and I asked if there was anything besides the redness I’d been able to see but was told no, it just looked irritated. She did have lichen sclerosis up on her computer screen before she examined me, whether that means she was actually looking for it or not I don’t know 😅

Get your iron levels checked, if you are anaemic thrush can be a sign of this.

I would ask for a diabetes test for sure. I would also ask them to clarify if LS was present or not- you might need to see a gynaecologist for this as GPs have no clue really.

Thrush and ear infections were symptoms of my own Type 2 diabetes.

Colbinabbin · 20/09/2026 03:25

@Pumpkinfrost TBH I just treated it with over the counter pharmacy meds until thirst became an issue. I had recurrent thrush 4-6 times a year before other, more noticeable diabetes symptoms showed.
i thought it was perimenopause; had excessive tiredness, mood swings, vaginal soreness and thrush. Women’s clinic tested blood sugars to allay my concerns but it was all diabetes.
if I had got it checked out earlier I may have been able to deal with the diabetes a lot sooner.

Pumpkinfrost · 20/09/2026 07:35

@SlightlyHeartbroken they were fine when I had a blood test a little while ago but I can ask, I had no idea that could have an impact!

@Beekman yeah I’ve heard it’s a very hard thing to get diagnosed without seeing a specialist. I think I’m just bracing myself, even though my GP is really nice, to be fobbed off if it sounds like I’ve just come back with a bunch of stuff I’ve read online

@Colbinabbin thank you so much for sharing your experiences, what you’ve said is really enlightening and helpful ❤️

Canesten and the oral pill don’t work for me. I use Boots Thrush & BV – they always clear it up.

Pumpkinfrost · 20/09/2026 08:49

@Didimum ahh okay, I thought all the products in the pharmacies were pretty much the same thing/active ingredient, just with different names? My swabs didn’t show any trace of BV thankfully!

The Boots ones are Hyaluronic acid, Canesten is clotrimazole. Boric acid is also an effective treatment.

I had recurrent thrush after pregnancy (no diabetes), which lasted on/off for two years.

With the Boots one, it’s says two packs might be necessary, so persevere with another if you need. With or without BV doesn’t matter – as it just treats both.

I’ll give it a go, at this point I’m willing to try anything! Don’t understand how a ‘light growth’ can cause this much agro 🙈
