To ask if you give things away from free

Ive got to be really honest, I have reached a point where i will charity shop or even bin something rather than give it to the chronic askers where i live because a) i find them so graspy & b) everything they take they wind up selling on not giving on. They are like leeches wanting to profit off other peoples charity.

Yeah i tried selling once ans it was more of a hassle than it was worth.

A lot of my local friends are doing a lot of house construction and it's really nice because if they have something spare, they'll put it on the group and more often than not someone else will need it. No one ever asks for money.

Only things I can carry to the charity shop.

Everything else gets put in the tip as I've had far too much hassle with free stuff on Gumtree/FB.

I always have done when my son outgrows clothes/toys (my own clothes get used until no longer fit for purpose!). I might need to start selling instead though, I've got less and less left each month recently.

I believe clothes donated to charity shops are often sent further away, to avoid people seeing strangers wandering around in their dead loved ones’ clothes. We were told this when donating my grandmother’s clothes after she died. It would have upset my grandfather if he’d seen someone in their small village wearing something of hers.

We cleared my DM’s house after she died and, after my sister and I had taken all we wanted, we put the rest on a couple of trestle tables outside her garage over a couple of weekends, gave neighbours the heads up on the local WhatsApp and EVERYTHING went.

It would have made my mum so happy to think that so many local families now have one of her tablecloths or vases or glasses or pictures or chairs.

In fact, when we came back to the house for a final check, even the 2 trestle tables had gone!

Before kids I gave away literally everything to friends, family, charity, the local church etc but since have kids I’m so strapped for cash I can’t I have to sell it. Once the kids are old enough for full time school and I can work more hours I’ll be back to giving everything away again

Yes, i do and lots of people do where i live. However, it gets irritating that this seems to have led to a pervasive minority who are quite grabby and want everything for free.

Eg there's a lady where i live who will post constantly on local groups asking for things.

"Is anybody looking to get rid of an iphone"
"Looking for a kids bike, 14 or 16 inch good condition"

I messaged her about the second, saying i had an isla for sale. The reply was "i'm looking to get one free". Its take take take and a sense of entitlement.

Often these people will post with a very specific wish list "looking for the school uniform jumpers, age 9-10, must be the newer logo & in very good condition". I couldnt help it, i replied saying "they sell them in the uniform shop".

I only sell things if I'd get more than about £30 and even then only for collection with payment there and then. I am done with the back and forth, rudeness and flakiness with most second hand selling. I usually put things on my driveway and they go the same day.

I give loads of things away on my local WhatsApp group and also to the baby bank. I only sell if it's a well known brand that goes for over £5/10 and that's mainly stuff that belongs to me or DH (sold a few old designer shirts of his on vinted for example). Kids stuff it just isn't worth it when it was originally second hand anyway. I try and avoid giving to charity shops as I know they are inundated with stuff!

Yes, I give to charity shops and via someone I know who works in across communities. My DD puts toys on free apps and it's always nice to see them getting readvertised.

Yes I only really give things away. People have always been really kind to us over the years and I see it as passing things on.
I also like to support the local charity shop which is for the local hospice.

Yes, I can't be bothered with the hassle of trying to sell things that are worthless to me for peanuts.

Yes, I use Freecycle quite a lot throughout the year. I had something on there this week but didn't go, I might put it back up and if it still doesn't go then I'll take it to the charity shop next time I go.

The one thing I never have trouble getting rid of is plants, I've given lots of them away since I started using Freecycle about 12 years ago.

I 've always given things to charity shops if they're outgrown or unwanted. I used Freecycle to get rid of baby stuff when it was no longer needed but giving to charity shops is easier.

I started doing this years before selling on ebay or vinted was a thing so the habit is ingrained. I'm not desperate for money so would prefer the charities to get something from the stuff I no longer want. It's also less hassle than selling.

@ALovelyPinkUnicorn Yes they get the extra funds through gift aid though in theory the donator can claim the gift aid back.

Yes. Most things I pop on our local free group Or have Anglo Doorstep Collections pick up. I only sell things that originally cost me £50+ and which I think there’s a market for (eg kids bikes, our fancy high chair). Even then, I sell them quite cheap.

I used to sell a lot of kids clothes on Vinted for £1-5, but only because I lived next door to the parcel shop so it was worth my while.

Yes, download the Olio app. You can give and receive free stuff. There is a section for borrowing (never used). Free food, never used , not sure how that works.

I love the Olio because it’s clear, it’s collection only. Cuts out idiots who want free stuff and it delivered too. I never meet the people who collect. We arrange a time and they collect from the doorstep.

You give your receiver/giver a rating and I think this is reason I have never had a no show.

Yes we have a street whatsapp group which started in lockdown and now is a great place to get rid of stuff (and get stuff - recently a beautiful bookcase, huge floor lamp and a drinks trolley).I would rather pass stuff on rather than faff trying to sell .Clothes go to charity shops or the clothes bin collection things.

Yes, I have a charity near me that takes more or less everything. Furniture, bedding, towels, electrics. They help people in need to set up home, or source things they need. I have been de cluttering and replacing over a long period of time and they have have collected the lot. I would prefer someone to get more use out of my unwanted stiff rather than it go to waste. I also donate to a hygiene bank.

Never. To be honest I only share goodies at work when I have had enough of them.

I do, but mainly to charity shops now. Sometimes I do FB marketplace if I’m in the mood to be harangued by loons.

Yes all the time. I dont have a lot of actual money to give away, so I always feel like its my small way of giving back and helping others out. Sometimes its because I just need the space!
