AIBU to think we all have too many clothes?

I’ve come back from my holiday and done the laundry and vacuumed packed my summer clothes. I wouldn’t say I buy clothes that often but I’ve brought out my winter stuff and I am OVERWHELMED by the amount of things I own and I don’t even like most of it!!

Any advice on how to streamline this?

Well this thread inspired me to go through my pairs of jeans, I wss gobsmacked to find 7 pairs in my wardrobe! I tried them all on and 4 pairs are going to the charity shop.

Lilo22 · 21/09/2026 16:59

My nan used to safety pin a post it note to every item of clothing she owned on 1st January, then take the safety pin and post it note off when she wore something. Then the next year 1st January anything that still had the safety pin attached hadn’t been worn all year and therefore went to the charity shop

Realworld10 · 21/09/2026 16:51

Yes, far too many! I used to love going shopping for clothes and fond it difficult to get rid of the what is. Of i was honest I probably wear less than 20% of the ones in the bedroom alone.

My items aren't expensive, mostly vinted now, but I seem to find excuses to hang on to too many.

Also yes due to accessibility to buy cheap, online, supermarkets etc so same for DC as well. When I was younger I really didn't have many at all, especially student days, so I guess being able to shop was like a treat when I started earning a better salary.

Look back, life was so much simpler with fewer outfits and actually very happy!

WrongWomen · 21/09/2026 16:33

I love clothes!
But I, too, have too many things i don't wear, just knocking about. Our spare room is an absolute disgrace
I'm about to clear it out & donate / recylce a load of it
I've bought a hanging rail & plan to seperate out my work wardrobe which will make things easier in the mornings

BountifulPantry · 21/09/2026 15:28

Why is the solution to have a big clear out?

Why not just… stop buying clothes and wear what you already have for a few years?

If something really doesn’t fit and you don’t think that you’ll be the size again or it’s maternity wear you don’t need any more then fair, get rid! But surely most of it can be worn?

I feel seen… 😁

Same here.. I do tidy it away then it gets washed and back in the pile again.. A never ending cycle!

SonK · 21/09/2026 11:03

Buy good quality materials that suit your figure and lifestyle so you get wear out of it and it is not just sitting in your wardrobe because you liked it when you saw it at the store.

I had a walk in wardrobe which was a large double room but I have not bought any clothes for a year now and I am slowly going through everything I have. If the item is daily wear and I have not worn it in a month it is being donated. If it is occasional wear and has not been worn in a year then it will be donated.

Morepositivemum · 21/09/2026 10:52

I definitely don’t have enough! I’m always in awe of people who talk about their separate summer and winter wear- I’ve a few extra bits for summer and then staples I wear all year round- jeans, tracksuit bottoms and black trousers and 2 thicker cardigans and 2 lighter ones a as nd as someone said above resorts and vest tops just become underwear really!!!

@vickylou78

When you decide let me know and I will get rid of mine. I just cannot get rid at the moment as there is just a chance that this year they may fit. Maybe 😂

Yes that's what I keep thinking! It's only 2 stone ish I have to lose and maybe this is the year! Haha. I really should have got rid of it all a while ago but I keep thinking about the cost of replacing it all and its nice tops and jeans etc.

I have more things that I am going to diet back into than anything else 😂

Me too!!! I'm currently a size 14-16 so have a load of clothes that size but I also have all my size 12 clothes from when I was slimmer. For 6 years I've been trying to diet down to be able to fit back into my size 12 clothes but I just don't seem to be able to do it!!
At what point should I give up and get rid of all my size 12 clothes?!

I do but as an aside, I wouldn't be so hasty to pack the summer stuff away yet as forecast is 24 this week in the southern half of the country,.

I packed all my summer clothes away last weekend. I have been back in socks since mid August (Yorkshire).

Mine all fit in two drawers and on 10 hangers so other than reorder the hangers or pair up the socks am not sure what they would work with. It’s easy not to buy too much - I only replace stuff. I have one pair of jeans, two pairs of trousers, two pairs of shorts etc I have more dresses but I don’t think anyone even notices I have a limited wardrobe - who cares what other people wear.

Sounds like you’ve got it sorted. Lots of people don’t though. For a number of reasons, and need some help with it.

Twice a year when I swap over seasons I do a ruthless cull. I pull absolutely everything out of the wardrobe & separate it into chuck or charity. That way, next summer when I swap it all back, it’s already been streamlined! If I haven’t worn it at all in that previous 6 months then it’s gone! X

I do the same and it definitely works for me.

Rubyupbeat · 21/09/2026 07:17

@Fidgety31I am the same, only wear off my clothes pile

Rubyupbeat · 21/09/2026 07:16

I have too many clothes, I worry that I hoard them! I wear the same 10 things (around) everyday. It's ridiculous, I hate it. I also make a lot of my clothes and love fat face and White stuff and buy from them every season, but I go over the top and buy every colour or pattern in everything I like, which is a huge amount.
I honestly think I need counselling for that and my binge eating, probably connected?

pulpJarvis · 21/09/2026 07:02

I had to empty the spare room out recently, where I have 2 chests of drawers and a wardrobe full of clothes….it was sobering. Next rainy weekend I’m having a proper clear out.

some of it is holiday clothes which it rarely gets warm enough where I live to wear.

some is from when I had to dress more smartly at work.

some are clothes I’m never going to fit in again,,..

IHateEmptyPockets · 21/09/2026 06:56

Fidgety31 · 19/09/2026 21:52

I don’t wear anything in my wardrobes . I only wear things off the pile 😂

I feel seen… 😁

Tamtim · 21/09/2026 06:54

Yep, too much of everything. Sometimes I think I’d like to skip everything and start over in a tiny home!

RosaNovella · 21/09/2026 06:50

I really dont like summer clothes worn in winter, it looks off and like you are freezing!

summater · 21/09/2026 06:39

I have a couple of Pax wardrobes and the out of season stuff gets folded into Pax storage box things that fit in the fairly unusable top part of the wardrobe which is hard to reach.

I cover up in the summer but the trousers are those wide floaty ones or linen tapered trousers that are not suitable for winter at all.

ThisMauveTurtle · 21/09/2026 02:32

I have too much clothes tooo but I hate throwing good stuff out.
What I have done is take a few pieces, will wear them this winter and by the time winter is over they will be ready for the bin.
I did this with pyjamas a few months ago.
Took out 3 pairs.
They have been worn and washed so much at this stage I can bin them.
Onto the next 3 pairs now.
I think my Christmas my clothes ilecwill have reduced

Yeresh · 20/09/2026 23:29

I have multiple wardrobes full of clothes. I am planning to put them on Vinted, I don't want to give to charity when I could make money out of it.

I don't put summer clothes away, I tend to cover up through the summer and my summer wardrobe isn't too different from my winter wardrobe (I just put a jumper on top and wear leggings under jeans when it gets really cold).

Of course. It’s so good! It’s a one off thing, you don’t need to have masses of clothes, gives clarity and reduces overwhelm and means you won’t waste your life buying loads more clothes.

Do people really do this? You must have masses of clothes to make it worthwhile
