Partner kicked off at birthday gift

Last month it was my partner of 4 years birthday
we have a 1 year old son.

im cringing writing this by the way….
he hates birthdays & Xmas. He’s very awquard 🙄
I asked him so many times leading to his birthday what would you like?
I’ve bought him stuff every year he just doesn’t use it want so I said I prefer to get you something you truly want or need.
he made it clear he wasn’t interested didn’t want nothing but anything I did he was grateful for.
so I thought I’m not putting him through all gifts etc he hates it so I got him a £100 voucher for his fav clothes shop and we was going out for dinner that night (our treat) got him cards too and a little daddy gift from our son.

on the morning I gave it him with our son .. an hour later he was crying in the kitchen!!!!! I said what is wrong!??????? He said don’t matter. I said no tell me what is wrong!?
he said you don’t fkin love me you got me f*ck all you tight bitch !!!!!! And proceeded to cry!!!!!! Packed all his stuff and left after he majorly kicked off. (He has an empty house he owns that he was gonna rent out) he’s gone back there not been back since. No apology nothing. He still fetches our son.

im still gob smacked. Am I the one in the wrong????? Please be honest.
by the way he’s a grown 50 year old x

Is he freaking out at turning 50?!

Thepossibility · 19/09/2026 23:50

I hope you find it within yourself to leave this awful man.

Wooky073 · 19/09/2026 23:01

Sounds like game playing behaviour to me.
could be trauma around birthdays for to childhood, could be a manipulation tactic as he wanted to breakup bit didn’t have the guts to be adult about it. She he treated a situation to use as the reason in which he blames you. He sounds very disrespectful and immature. You are better off without this second child manbaby.

You cannot know the reasons and don’t trouble yourself with why. Just move on with your life as best you can. He will reap what he sows.

Fast800goingforit · 19/09/2026 22:52

He was 100% looking for an excuse to end things. You haven't done anything wrong from what you've posted. Had things been difficult with having a child together? On the plus side he is maintaining a relationship with his child.

ASimpleLampoon · 19/09/2026 22:51

He's cheating and caused the argument as an excuse to go off to the other property to meet them.

Ridiculous behaviour buying a voucher for his birthday. You have been together for 4 years FFS. You should have known what he would want. No wonder the poor bloke was so upset. Hopefully he finds someone who appreciates him.

Are you her DP?

seahorsessky · 19/09/2026 22:29

It sounds like he has something wrong with him. Seriously. Mental or physical health issues? Because this is not a normal way to behave.

LemonLass · 19/09/2026 22:27

Sorry you had to experience this BS @whatthehellyy

You just paid £100 bullsh1t tax - it may not seem like it but he has done you a favour... He sounds manipulative and also expects you to be a mindreader. He is a grown ass man in his 50s and can't use his words or express a preference? Throw him back as mumsnetters say...

I hope you see that it really isn't about you. That guy has issues but I hope you and your kiddo are doing OK without him x

VielleTruite · 19/09/2026 22:24

What ridiculous behaviour! I'd get him another present - a nice new set of locks for the doors and no key. Let him stay and stew in his spare house and good riddance. You don't need this, you've already got one child to deal with. There's obviously something else going on and he's been looking for an excuse to throw his paddy and flounce off into the sunset. Oh, and I'd get the voucher back and spend it on your child instead. What a petulant man-brat!

Rhubarb24 · 19/09/2026 22:20

I'm awkward but it doesn't give me the right to be nasty to people. He's a turd.

Jaropickles · 19/09/2026 22:05

Put in a claim for child maintenance asap

Annoyedbyhusband · 19/09/2026 21:56

What have I just read… who acts like that?? Whenever I think my DH is being an arsehole so just read something like this and think… well I must have one of the good ones then as this is completely unhinged behaviour. Crying, storming out and just being generally a complete and utter prick. Sorry OP, in better news now you can leave him and go live a happy life because this surely is the nail in the coffin.

HeatedBlanketBliss · 19/09/2026 21:47

Oh wow. What a great model for your DC.

That is bizarre behaviour and I wonder if he’s one of these men that can’t bear the attention shifting from them when kids come along. At 50 he really should have grown up by now.

Does he have a crazy ex that won’t let him see his other children? Or a couple of them?

There are red flags waving all around but it’s hard to understand without more of a sense of what he’s like. But this would give me the ‘ick’ as they say.

QueenietheGreat · 19/09/2026 21:39

@whatthehellyy
Some women would not bother to buy their partner anything ever, especially if they're so vehement about it
Probably knowing you still would though
I think this was his excuse to show displeasure and then leave you.

MummyJ36 · 19/09/2026 21:34

did he expect princess treatment? 👸🏼

Sam9769 · 19/09/2026 20:59

Harrriet · 19/09/2026 18:12

A deep dark background to his reaction, nothing you have done.

This plus he's a cowardly prick for not telling you the real reason he left!

SL2924 · 19/09/2026 20:55

The trash took itself out as they say

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/09/2026 20:54

ICantGetNoSleepHere · 19/09/2026 20:36

He’s a twat but was it his 50th?

I wanted to be made a fuss of on my 50th, so I organised my own birthday! I didnt expect my DP (at the time) to do it for me. Because I dont need other people to "prove" they care about me!

TheEarlofButties · 19/09/2026 20:52

I just don’t believe half the post on mumsnet anymore. They don’t ring true and after a couple of messages from the OP to get it started the OP disappears. They’re either AI written or it’s someone’s job but yeah I’m out, call me a flouncer, it’s just dull

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/09/2026 20:51

Oh....so it was his 50th and he did the old "Oh I dont want a fuss" and when you didnt make one he kicked off?

He might be 50 but he isnt a grown up at all.

SpecialShark · 19/09/2026 20:48

It does sound awquard

Takeoutyourhen · 19/09/2026 20:46

Was it his 50th? Maybe he was all oh no presents but really wanted a huge party/surprise 🤷‍♀️
Totally unacceptable behaviour though, whatever the reason!

MyArtfulGreySloth · 19/09/2026 20:41

He’s a twat. What a horrid man.

dpbarbie9 · 19/09/2026 20:40

You deserve better than him!

How ungrateful and 100 pounds is a lot of money!!! ❤️
