Last month it was my partner of 4 years birthday
we have a 1 year old son.

im cringing writing this by the way….
he hates birthdays & Xmas. He’s very awquard 🙄
I asked him so many times leading to his birthday what would you like?
I’ve bought him stuff every year he just doesn’t use it want so I said I prefer to get you something you truly want or need.
he made it clear he wasn’t interested didn’t want nothing but anything I did he was grateful for.
so I thought I’m not putting him through all gifts etc he hates it so I got him a £100 voucher for his fav clothes shop and we was going out for dinner that night (our treat) got him cards too and a little daddy gift from our son.

on the morning I gave it him with our son .. an hour later he was crying in the kitchen!!!!! I said what is wrong!??????? He said don’t matter. I said no tell me what is wrong!?
he said you don’t fkin love me you got me f*ck all you tight bitch !!!!!! And proceeded to cry!!!!!! Packed all his stuff and left after he majorly kicked off. (He has an empty house he owns that he was gonna rent out) he’s gone back there not been back since. No apology nothing. He still fetches our son.

im still gob smacked. Am I the one in the wrong????? Please be honest.
by the way he’s a grown 50 year old x

50! He's 50? I don't even think any of my most hormonal teens would have behaved this way, even if grossly disappointed.

But then, they all knew that, had they called me a bitch of any description, my reaction would have been ballistic.

I agree with others that he was setting you up for a fall. Maybe the tears were because he knew he was leaving his son.

Tuesdayschild50 · 21/09/2026 10:58

You don't need this manchild in your life get the voucher back and make him pay child support for his child and he can go and live in his empty arse house..the absolute prick.

Tuesdayschild50 · 21/09/2026 10:54

What the actual fuck ? Im thinking like others he planned his reaction to beable to leave..
Who behaves this way and especially a 50 plus yr old .
I don't know what advice to give because this would absolutely put me off a man forever.

Exactly what I thought. Let it be, OP. When the rubbish takes itself out it’s just saving you the bother.

@whatthehellyy

Sorry, OP, sadly I think this. He’s ripe for midlife crisis too.

Obviously, if this was really out of character, maybe check that he’s not got something going on health/mental wise, but if not, he’s a prick, and future you may be glad you got out now.

Still hard though….

CrazyCatLady2026 · 21/09/2026 07:14

For my birthday, my partner got me a card off the kids. That was all. I didn't storm out and move out. Are you sure he didn't turn 4?

Gherkinslice · 21/09/2026 06:36

Chunkybabythighs · 19/09/2026 18:14

He wanted to dump you so came up with a bullshit reason

Well that is a perfectly good present you got him there, so i agree there is more to this. But what a nasty immature person he sounds. I could not forget this or trust him. You have your son to think of in this, and i would not want him growing up remembering this type of thing. Let him be gone!

The dickhead is probably waiting for an apology…. I bet you will hear from him on a personal level in a couple of weeks when he figures out the grass isn’t greener elsewhere.

i had an ex pick fights on Friday’s so he was ‘single’ on weekends. His mum eventually told me he would go out and then drive past my place to see if my car was there.

they want it both ways.

Nah, he is already dipping his wick in someone elses candle vat. He will be back, but only when he gets dumped by her.

Laurmolonlabe · 20/09/2026 23:07

I have never had anyone complain I did not spend enough- he's 50 not 5, for God's sake, a partner who judges a gift purely by the amount of money you spent is not a partner worth keeping in my view.

Hello 😂 it wasn’t his 50th. He’s 49. Sorry I rounded it up 😂 x

That’s good you have now avoided the big 50th. Imagine how he will be able that birthday!!

Calmdownfolks · 20/09/2026 22:11

That's a really really strange reaction for an adult. Maybe it was the excuse he needed to extract himself from the relationship, or if this is truly an out of character reaction, maybe he's ill. Possibly mentally or something like undiagnosed diabetes or something. As others have said, I wouldn't be looking for the reason with yourself but something internal to him. Snapping like that sounds like something that's been building for a while.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/09/2026 22:11

Can I ask how you met @whatthehellyy ?

Was he with someone or freshly single?

Cancel the voucher, he obviously hates it and doesn’t want it.

Spend the money on a treat for you and your kid.

Familiarise yourself with ‘the script’. Assess his past and future behaviours for indicators that he is following it.

Dogmum6 · 20/09/2026 20:34

was it his 50th? Devils advocate he was expecting something personal with a lot of thought and love out into it. He felt you didn't go all out for him on his
Special day and is feeling unloved ?

LightningTree · 20/09/2026 20:03

A £100 clothes voucher is a generous gift. I assume he did see it and not accidently chuck it away with the envelope.

This was the excuse he needed to leave wasn't it? I cant imagine my love calling me a tight bitch!
Classic he made it clear he wasn’t interested didn’t want nothing

Tell him its much calmer with him not there,

changeme4this · 20/09/2026 19:42

I would say he enjoys manipulating you, Making you feel unsure about him.

you don’t need a drama queen in your life.

Sunshine231 · 20/09/2026 19:39

Once for my birthday my ex took my credit card to Sainsbury’s and got me a book that was in the clearance section and a mini box of Lindt chocolates. That gift was quite literally less than nothing as I had to pay for it myself 😅 £100 and a meal is not nothing 😂

RamALamADingDong2 · 20/09/2026 19:29

Can I ask - was this his 50th birthday? As in, 'the big five oh"? I'm not justifying this giant man-baby's behaviour, but I'm wondering if he was expecting a surprise party or a big fuss because it was a milestone birthday or something. I'll be honest, if I was turning 50 and my significant other gave me a gift voucher, I'd be put out - not cry-in-the-kitchen-and-move-out level, but probably disappointed.

But any normal birthday I'd probably be chuffed x

Homealonelez · 20/09/2026 19:23

I always tell everyone not to get me Xmas presents I think it’s for the kids seeing them happy is my present but his reaction is rather pathetic I think he might of done you a favour

Cosmo676 · 20/09/2026 19:22

For Xmas a few years ago, my partner gave me £100 in cash and some bits he had clearly panic bought from Boots when I had bought him loads of really thoughtful gifts. It wasn’t his finest hour but I didn’t run off crying and I was only in my twenties! And we weren’t parents then! No excuse for your man baby unless he is having some sort of breakdown.

ClearFruit · 20/09/2026 19:11

Jesus, bin him. What a prick.

Iloveeverycat · 20/09/2026 19:08

O00ps · 19/09/2026 19:28

Was this his big 50 birthday?!
A voucher is a bit low effort if so

Not it's not it's very generous

TheListThatNeverEnds · 20/09/2026 18:48

My dad always did this. Would refuse to give any ideas for presents, and then be visibly disappointed with anything he was bought. I used to tie myself in knots and get so anxious shopping for him, but nothing was ever good enough for him (and I don't just mean the presents). I have a hunch your guy might be similar- does he have ever moving goal posts for other things too?
