To ask if anyone actually sticks to 20mph speed limits?

I do. Where I live it feels the right speed for the area. I'm glad it was brought in.

Yes, I do. It’s a question of physics & biology. If you hit a pedestrian or cyclist at 20mph (or if a driver hits you when you are walking and cycling) then the victim has a good chance of survival - at 30mph they do not. Your stopping distance at 20mph is lower so you have a better chance of avoiding a collision.

We do have 20mph where I live & some drivers ignore it. It’s why I take an interest in road safety - it was very scary when my DC were younger having to walk along residential streets with parked cars where the safe speed to drive was 20mph (as well as the limit) but too many drivers decided that they should ignore it.

Personally, I’ve found the limits in Wales consistent & fine - town centres & residential streets 20mph, outskirts 30mph otherwise national unless there is an obvious reason for a lower speed.

What about the twats who do 40 in a 20 zone, then 40 in a 60?

I stick to speed limits and often have angry men gesticulating behind me. It'll serve them right when the stress gives them a heart attack. I don't pull over or anything.

I can tell that most don’t comply with 20mph because we have loads of those signs that display your speed. Most cars are doing over 20mph in a 20 zone. I don’t blame them, TBF, they’re usually between 20 and 25.

I am also in Wales, where the 20mph zones were introduced and then quickly scrapped, and most councils were said to have gone back to them being 30mph. Most people do 30mph through them... with the exception of tourists around here. They drive VERY slowly (I understand that they're concerned about missing the turn-offs) until they get to the caravan park, or glamping place, nearby, and stick at doing 30mph through 50mph zones. Even the tractors pull over to let drivers stuck behind them pass. Disclaimer: we do not have speed cameras around here, and are unlikely to any time soon, given that we don't have streetlights or sometimes pavements!

When I go to visit family in England, driving everywhere at 30mph (if that) feels terribly slow!

Common sense people don’t know what that means today just like courtesy no respect for others I do generally stick to the limits but at 20 it is easy to go over if your not watching your speed

I’ll be honest and admit that no, I do not. Hear me out though. If I’m driving through a (genuine) built up area that clearly states 20mph or, if I’m passing by a school then yes, i will stick to 20mph. However, if I happen to be driving in Wales were they (ridiculously imo) did a blanket 30mph “ban” and changed most areas to 20mph then no, I do not tend to stick to that. But it goes both ways. I regularly drive long distances for work, sometimes it can be 500 miles on a busy week, and I travel on a good mix of urban and rural roads. Most of the rural roads I’ve travelled on are 60mph but, I’d say, 80-90% of these roads should not be designated 60mph due to safety eg hair pin turns, sharp bends, 20-30% gradients etc. On these roads the most I usually travel is 40mph because I’m not an idiot and I don’t have a death wish, yet I regularly have drivers up my backside flashing their lights at me to go faster. I have been driving for 24 years and haven’t had a single speeding ticket, have not been involved in any accidents or incidents so despite pushing the speed limit at times I’m far from stupid or reckless, I simply trust my own instinct and common sense.

Yes, I just hope that these people eventually do get caught, but sadly I suspect they carry on year after year and never do. That's a large part of the problem, of course.

Oh, and yes, I find 20mph a bit pedestrian, but it's the speed limit, and I didn't choose it, so I stick to it.

Although I double checked this morning going to work on a 40 road and everyone was overtaking me. That seems to happen a lot lately.

I got overtaken on a 20mph residential street by some arsehole who must've been doing 40-50mph. He was furious with me for doing the speed limit (he was right up my arse and I could see him in the mirror).

He narrowly missed cars on the opposite side of the road, and some pedestrians who thankfully crossed the road about 30 seconds after he'd gone past (they'd come from somewhere they would have seen him til he was on them, and he certainly wouldn't have seen them before it was too late).

I do at the school round the corner. It's a special needs' school but I'd do it at any school. At dropping off and throwing out time there are flashing lights and signs for 20mph. People are parked on both sides of the road so you can't easily see if someone was to run off the pavement. Otherwise, only in a traffic jam.

No, you're not the only person to stick to the speed limit 😀. The people coming up behind you will do the same in 30, 40, 60mph limits too. They're morons.

Careful doing 23 on the Satnav, that's a genuine 23, and if there are cameras they can and will record you for that.
