Aibu to wish more artists adopted Dolly Parton’s philosophy?

Re the Ed Sheeran/ Macklemore issue- AIBU to wish more musicians and performers would have the same attitude as Dolly Parton who said,” … keep your damn mouth shut if you want to stay in show business. I’m not in politics, I’m an entertainer.”
Yet she was universally loved and admired- and ALSO made the world a better place through her philanthropy- by NOT speaking politically she actually communicated her philosophy through her actions not her words. She did this by not alienating people!

🤣 Has anyone suggested that?

I remember I think in the last US election, people were pushing Taylor Swift to give her opinion. I think the big stars are often hassled to give their opinion when there are big events happening in the world. They def should not have to.

thesealion · 19/09/2026 17:22

Do you believe in free speech? It the answer is yes, then you shouldn’t be asking anyone to be quiet about what they believe in. It’s highly ironic that the loudest opponents to Macklemore are also the ones that, on any other occasion, bleat about cancel culture and the left curtailing free speech. In reality what they mean is “only the speech I deem acceptable”, the antithesis of what they say they believe in. Music has always been political.

Whisperwaves · 19/09/2026 17:23

Music has always been political and all the better for it.

Pestering someone for their opinion is not the same as having an obligation to get involved politically through your artistic medium. The latter is what Pinkissmart seems to be suggesting I am in favour of.

I don't condone either, fwiw.

I am strongly in favour of the musicians that chose to, to use their music and their platform to voice their opinions. Whether that's to do with feminism, LGBT and inequality (which artists like Dolly Parton have voiced opinions on) or war and genocide. Or any other political issue for that matter.

And isn't it a gift that we can choose the ones we listen to, and tune out the rest?

jiffypipe · 19/09/2026 17:27

It depends what you’re defining as political really. Dolly didn’t endorse a political party (she famously said she didn’t like any of them) but she absolutely spoke politically with a small ‘p’ as has been stated, in interviews, in her music, she endorsed equality of sexes, sexuality, race. It was just very clear she endorsed humanity really, that’s probably why it transcended bipartisan politics. But I wouldn’t call her neutral.

I don't think Macklemore was endorsing any political party either.

In fact I would suggest that the most interesting and influential political comment comes when it's not attached to any one political party.

GreenEyesIsBack · 19/09/2026 17:32

Dolly accepted men as women.

CurbsideProphet · 19/09/2026 17:34

I find virtue signalling pretty excruciating.

For example I've not seen many (any?) celebrities expressing public concern / anger for the danger and threat to life experienced by women and children in Afghanistan. If they're all so concerned and outraged about suffering and genocide, why aren't they all protesting about other countries where this is also taking place?

Yes I think Taylor Swift is a good example . If she openly supported any one side of the political debate, she would lose half of her support.

I think I agree. In a similar vein, I once went to an American musician's concert (I'd been to one before which was different) and he spent the whole time talking about his religious beliefs and pushing them between songs. I didn't go to be preached at and have never been to another of his concerts. I love his music though.

She very openly supported Kamala Harris!

It'd be like if you went to a political rally and they got a band out and started a singalong. Just no thanks.

Songs about political beliefs maybe, fans obviously know the content and decide if they want to go and see them but to have free palestine screamed at you mid act? Nope.

Music is part of political rallies though. It’s part of how human being express themselves and their beliefs surely.

So if Macklamore was known for political songs it would be ok?

Like maybe Hinds Hall?

"The people, they won't leave
What is threatenin' about divesting and wantin' peace?
The problem isn't the protests, it's what they're protesting
It goes against what our country is funding
(Hey) Block the barricade until Palestine is free
(Hey) Block the barricade until Palestine is free
When I was seven, I learned a lesson from Cube and Eazy-E
What was it again? Oh yeah, fuck the police (woo)"

Oh wait. That is his song.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 19/09/2026 18:06

Dolly Parton was VERY political, but she did it in her own way. She championed feminist values but didn't use the word. That was her choice, and I think we need both types of political action. (Jane fonda was the opposite and they worked together beautifully. Basically they conveyed the same message to different people. But we can't expect every artist to be that intelligent...)

Then why are you coming on a threat that is about what he said on stage, and the backlash that followed?

They're going to see Ed Sheeran not his crap support acts. Most would have no clue about 'hind hall' lyrics and no one wants free palestine screamed at them.

Historically she didn’t disclose, I remember there being articles about it, I want to say she even did a statement about it. Bearing in mind earlier in her career she was more reliant on a conservative country music audience, but yes changed more recently (can’t remember which particular campaign caused her to go public).

Weeellokthen · 19/09/2026 19:02

Yeah, like Sudan. It's just so super cool to hate the jews. These "artists" know this and have jumped on the bandwagon to be popular.
I have not heard one popular artist talking about the horrific deaths and famine in Sudan. It's about 300,000 deaths and counting.
Why is this?

Her first endorsements were of Dem senate candidates in the 2018 midterms, and she since endorsed Biden and Harris.

She had previously been under a lot of pressure from her father and management to keep silent.

Macklemore cancelled a show to protest about Sudan.

Nothing to do with Jews that one.

You are very much missing the point.

Macklemore was booked for the tour. And then booted from it for saying words that feature in more than one of his songs.

This has nothing to do with the audience. They didn't boot anyone from the tour.

If the promoter (and Ed Sheeran, because nobody really believes he didn't have any say in the decision) didn't want political statements about Palestine to feature, they really picked the wrong act.

Gloriia · 19/09/2026 22:50

'If the promoter (and Ed Sheeran, because nobody really believes he didn't have any say in the decision) didn't want political statements about Palestine to feature, they really picked the wrong act'

Exactly. Now rectified. People don't want that crap when they buy sheeran tickets.
