Met a bunch of lecturers at party last night. Dont think ive ever met such an entitled bunch. Nice pay for minimal hours but complaining about how they have to answer loads of emails (??). One of them in their 60s actually admitted they would't meet the qualification requirements for their role if they were applying for it today.
So much bitching and whining and all i could think was "so how come you've stuck with this job for decades then, you could have gone out to work in industry if its so awful"...

And you teach 3 days a week and do nothing else?

I didnt say that. I was comparing a week with teaching in it. The other work gives you more autonomy.
Marking in HE 4 week deadline. Class of exams in school a week.

Are you still working as an academic?

Yes

I find it much more manageable than school.

You talk as though academics are teaching a maximum of 3 days and that’s it? You’re deliberately ignoring everything else the job involves.

Max 3 x days teaching vs 2 full days and 2 days of 4 lessons. I know which I prefer.

Academics will be doing other work on the other two days though which you don’t seem
to be aware of.

Academic also have lessons (lectures, seminars, labs) to deliver in a specific time slot Confused Plenty of deadlines, short medium and long.

Not quite sure why you regard short deadlines as worse - if I’ve got three one-hour tasks to deliver by next Tuesday, or twelve one-hour tasks to deliver by next Friday the pressure and workload is the same.

Mumteedum · 24/09/2026 21:35

I think teaching as an academic will vary a lot. Timetabled sessions are fine if you have taught the material before and you can get away with an hour's prep to update/refresh. Unfortunately, I have brand new modules with zero content and zero prep time so it's like a rolling deadline every bloody week to try and stay a step ahead. I'm over allocation and have a lot of other people to support in various capacities with my responsibilities.

I don't know that comparing teaching in schools to teaching in HE is worthwhile. It's apples and oranges.

titchy · 24/09/2026 20:48

monkeysox · 24/09/2026 20:29

I dont have short deadlines like 5 x lessons per day anymore.

Those aren’t deadlines though. They’re timetabled lessons which you know about in advance.

monkeysox · 24/09/2026 20:29

MickyMoonshine · 24/09/2026 20:26

There’s no point comparing the two. They’re too different.
I’ve worked in schools and now as an academic and they are two very, very different jobs.

BTW academics also have short deadlines that can’t be moved 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely. Different pressures but more short deadlines that cant be moved in school.

Sure, but there’s no onus on secondary teachers to publish and disseminate peer-reviewed research, or ‘contribute to the future of the discipline.’

A full time academic. Teaching under and post grad is half the workload of a full time core secondary teacher.

Yes but teaching is only one aspect of the role. I’m a senior academic with leadership responsibilities. Im
teaching one module this academic year. I’ll still be working far more than my full time hours!

Academics are expected to do research, publish, supervise UG,PG and Doctoral students, carry out significant administrative tasks related to course and module leadership and get involved in a multitude of projects and committees.

only if you’re a lazy academic

Things have changed massively, like most sectors. Nearly all universities have had several rounds of redundancies over the last decade or so, which has got rid of the vast majority of the dead wood. The lazy academics just wouldn't have survived, certainly not where I work. I've had a chequered career, including several branches of nursing and several other sectors, and while academia provides some flexibility compared to e.g. nursing, the hours are longer, and the comparative pay is worse. And as I said earlier, the range of tasks we are expected to complete means we have a huge number of balls in the air, that can create huge workload peaks.

In my experience most people don't moan that much (certainly no worse than any other workplace) - they are passionate about what they do and want students to have a good experience. And I don't really recognise the widespread ego and entitlement - certainly not compared to consultants in hospitals. There's always a few (and we'll take the piss behind their backs), but generally people just seem to get on with stuff.

There’s an increasing trend in creative writing MAs and MFAs for the student to be working on the third part of a giant fantasy/sci-fi saga for their project, but for them to casually send you the 100,000-word preceding instalment too ‘because otherwise you won’t understand the world building and backstory’.

We now have strict rules for academic advisors and their personal students about how nany words advisors can feed back on, how often and when. Obviously the work can be discussed face to face.

When students email starting with 'Sorry to disturb your holiday but could you give me feedback on my 10, 000 word dissertation, deadline for submisdion is tomorrow' just because their term has ended...

I worked in academia for several years and most of the people I met there were the biggest bunch of work-shy, entitled whingers I've ever met!
TBH most of them wouldn't last 5 mins in the real world of work.
And JFI I have worked in the private sector and the public sector as well as academia.
Academics are by far the most self-pitying and tone deaf.

Every single academic? Doubt it.

In my faculty most of us HAVE worked 'in the real world of work' and continue to do so as working at a university is still a real job!

You have apparently never taught a class of 19-year-old know-it-alls. I earned every single penny.

KittyEckersley · 20/09/2026 23:14

I was a teacher and now a researcher. Teachers definitely get paid more for the same amount of experience e.g. number of years post PhD or pgce.
