To start picking out outfits for the week on a Sunday?

It’s heading into autumn and winter and the dark mornings have really crept up on me. Every year I struggle really badly with seasonal depression. I’ve seen my doctor about it and the outcome seems to just be a shrug of the shoulders and a “sorry there’s not much we can do”. I’ve had bloods done, I eat well and maintain a good exercise routine, but just struggle.

One thing I think will help is laying out clothes for the week so each morning is as easy as possible. I really struggle to get myself out of bed, so reducing friction should help.

My partner is dead against it. We have a big space in our bedroom where I’d like to put a small clothing rail to do this. AIBU? He thinks it’ll be too cluttered and tacky. I think it would be worth it to help me in the mornings.

I can just imagine this the other way round

'My partner suffers from depression and wants a separate rail in the bedroom to prepare his clothes for work to help that, but I dont want the clutter and mess of a separate rail as I find that stressful'

The posts would be full of 'he's a twat, he's a dick, he's selfish, why isnt he sorting out his depression without impacting on your shared space, he needs to go back to the GP'

etc etc

I have a overdoor hook. You can hang your work outfit on the back of the door and it takes up no room at all. One hanger. You can also hang your underwear and jewellery on it too. No need for a separate clothing rail.

PoloThePolarBear · 20/09/2026 10:55

If there’s room for the rail you linked then there’s room for a small wardrobe with a door, would he prefer that? Maybe if you try the rail and it helps then you could invest in a small wardrobe that would look better.

Also - I have SAD and just using the lumie alarm clock is not enough. You need to use the actual SAD lamps during the day as well. I have a visor that shines a light into my eyes. I wear for an hour or so every morning while doing the housework, laundry, making breakfast etc. Then a lamp at my desk that I also have on in the mornings.

This is a fantastic idea IMO! You've inspired me to consider the same. I struggle with depression and also ADHD - getting out of bed, completing the morning routine etc are all difficult for me too.

I can't quite explain why, but pre-planning and separating my outfits on a separate rail, displayed visually, sounds much less overwhelming than scrambling around in a loaded wardrobe in the morning.

Plus, due to ADHD I suspect, I often forget that I even own many items of clothing and resort to the same few 'safe' items lol.

This idea would be so useful for sorting and reinvigorating the neglected clothes.
I already do the same morning prep-wise in laying out my work bag, coffee mug, supplements etc.

I don't think it looks cluttered or tacky. And who the hell else will be hanging out in your bedroom to judge aesthetics??

Her partner! Who isnt happy with her suggestion, hence we are trying to find alternatives.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 20/09/2026 10:35

I get my tops and bottoms ready, and have them in a neat pile on a chair in my room. I leave my cardigans and jumpers in the wardrobe. I like having stuff ready, but I wouldn’t want a whole rail in my room. It seems excessive for 5 outfits. If they needed to be hung up, then a couple of hooks on the back of the bedroom door would do.

this sounds like a great idea OP. I cannot imagine a situation where I wouldn’t help a partner suffering with MH due to a perception of “clutter”. I think on you could try one of these:

  • buy the rail anyway (my preferred option)
  • lay clothes out on a chair to demonstrate a “more cluttered” option till he’s begging you to use a rail
  • suggest the rail has enough space for you both to use
  • put the rail or a wardrobe in a different room
  • clear/organise the cupboard to create more space to add a section to use for a week of outfits.
  • measure to see if a child’s wardrobe for outfits might fit? so it’s shorter. Long garments like trousers can be folded over a hanger. Or something like this which is a 111cm tall: www.argos.co.uk/product/7271911

All excellent ideas. Or maybe a sideboard/short cupboard you adapt to be able to hang, with everything being halved over soft hangers, but hidden behind doors.

The cupboard is very cramped. I do washing through the week and it’s impossible to reach the back, so it would become disorganised by Wednesday.

Having read your posts about your room and the space, could you put a rail in a different room? So they're there and sorted but not in view when you're both trying to relax for sleep?

Does he have any useful suggestions to help deal with your symptoms or does he think you just need to pull yourself together?

I'm guessing the latter if he thinks that the room looking uncluttered is more important than your mental health.

His mental health matters too. Some people really struggle with clutter and lack of space.
It would drive me potty adding that to our room.
The bedroom should be a relaxing space for both of them.

Alittlefrustrated · 20/09/2026 08:40

I can see his point. That will take up a lot of room. It would make the room feel cluttered and messy to me.
Do you not have somewhere else it could go? On the landing?
Is he thinking 'not another thing she'll stop doing after a fortnight "?

Cailleach1 · 20/09/2026 08:36

@wholikesliving . I think it is a fabulous idea. On foot of your post, I’m now considering it. Irrespective of any other reasons, it is just so organised and relieves one of another thing to have to think about of a morning. However, considering the fact it makes the daily grind a little easier for you, it is not very supportive of your OH. You can get those clothes rails which have a dust cover.

PeloMom · 20/09/2026 06:25

Toss the partner and get your rail!

cordeliavorkosigan · 20/09/2026 06:15

I've had SAD too. I think it's a brilliant idea and you are right, if he cares about you and had any idea what depression feels like he'd want to bend over backwards to make it better, so a rack would be an absolute no brainer (unless there are 27 other things cluttering up somewhere that sounded like a good plan but didn't help, or something else you haven't told us!).

Is he part of the problem, otherwise?

I'd say do both the rack and the long annual holiday in the sun. If he doesn't like the rack then oh well , perhaps 2 months in the sun for you, and he can hold the fort in the winter??

We don’t have a wardrobe, we have a cupboard with a clothing rail in it

Are things on hangers then? Can you take a top on a hanger, a skirt or pair of trousers on a hanger, put a pair of pants, bra, tights, leggings, whatever draped over both hangers? So they’re one unit? Then repeat that another four times, put them all back where they were and that’s your outfits sorted? Or a coat hook on the back of the cupboard door for the five outfits? Or back of the bathroom door? I admit I also don’t quite see where the issue is. Maybe we need a photo?

likelysuspect · 20/09/2026 00:56

wholikesliving · 19/09/2026 16:52

As I have explained. We don’t have a wardrobe, we have a cupboard with a clothing rail in it. And everything else - Christmas decorations, suitcases, etc etc. it’s basically a loft but in a cupboard, because our bedroom is in a loft extension. The proportions of the room don’t allow for a wardrobe in the bedroom but would allow for a clothing rail.

You need to de clutter and get built in wardrobes. Good storage is vital and although it might cost money its worth it.

If had (which we currently do as waiting for our new wardrobes) rails everywhere and clothes out, I would feel very anxious, edgy, miserable, claustrophobic and pissed off every time I went in the room

likelysuspect · 20/09/2026 00:49

I wouldnt want a rail hanging in the bedroom, it would look messy and cluttered and stress me out

What you could do, is put the whole outfit, in day order at one end of your wardrobe, so they're ready, hang the trousers and shirt on one hanger for one day and so on

I'd find this level of control too much.
It's good your DP is happy to accommodate you. Everyone is different!

Technically I'm accommodating him with the chair drobe. Not wanting a messy house with clutter isn't really controlling!

Sidebeforeself · 19/09/2026 23:01

wholikesliving · 19/09/2026 17:10

But you are not adding more clothes, just arranging them in order?

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 19/09/2026 22:05

I do kind of see where your DH is coming from. We had a clothes rail for a while before we had wardrobes fitted and it did without a doubt make the room feel cluttered and messy. It felt so much calmer and relaxing when we were able to get rid of it. The best solution, as others have suggested, would be to use one end of the wardrobe or just plan one day's outfit at a time.

JaneyDC · 19/09/2026 21:50

I always choose my outfit for work the night before. It just makes the morning a lot easier. We had a bit of space between the wardrobe and wall, so my DH drilled a rail to go in between. It is brilliant, as I use it for my planned outfit and also my jacket etc that I've worn once but doesn't need a wash yet. Only a few items so it uses the space but doesn't look too cluttered.

Your partner is unkind to not let you do something simple that would help your mental health.

buzzbuzzfly · 19/09/2026 21:49

I organise my clothes for the week and it helps me a lot

is there somewhere else in the house it could go, like a landing or spare room?
