This is a man on his fourth marriage with infidelity alleged in his three divorces.
Now, how truthful do we think he is, given his history?

Diana made the choice to speak very publicly about her life and marriage and the RF which may well have affected her children at the time, when they were still very young. I can't judge whether she was right or wrong to do that and it hardly matters any more now.

But I am not sure it is reasonable to blame Charles Spencer for also speaking out now (when her children are adults with children of their own) or to expect him to be any more scrupulous in protecting them, than their own mother was.

Diana was most likely very vulnerable, and suffering from her troubles mentally, when she spoke out. Can anyone say the same for her Brother?

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2026 18:50

I don’t think for a minute that Charles, at the time this happened, would imagine that anyone would have the temerity to repeat what he said. I mean didn’t Spencer say that “lack of public duty” was one of the things he was ranting about. At the time everybody kept their vow of silence (hence why the “three people in the marriage” interview was quite such a bombshell and why the late queen had to be dragged kicking and scresming to show any personal grief or remorse when Diana died).

These people do not react to personal tragedies in the same way us mere mortals do. It’s been trained out of them. They still show an almost medieval attitude to death, producing heirs, and marriage.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2026 17:20

Yeah yeah because as a senior royal he’s never been trained to put on a game face 🙄

The thing is, if he’s been trained to put on a game face he’s been trained also to ca’ canny : ie, not rant and make inflammatory statements on the phone to someone who dislikes and resents him and could easily be recording the conversation or have other people with him. This was after tampongate after all

RosesAndHellebores · 19/09/2026 18:40

I wonder if Charles Spencer's ex wives would verify his veracity? At least he's grown out of throwing bread rolls across the room at Mossop Street.

I'd like to know the context of the conversation. If it referred to she'll be forgotten soon enough in relation to the dalliance with Dodi and his papa, fair enough but we'll never know.

StormGazing · 19/09/2026 18:30

I don’t believe him. KC fought the queen to get the funeral Diana deserved, he flew out to get her body too, he looked bereft, and they had a friendship … remember the story about her shouting out of the KP window ‘same time next week’ … Spencer’s account doesn’t add up. Also he’s got a bad track record of treating people badly, ex wives and children, albeit KC has a fractured relationship with Harry, that’s Harry’s fault.

Bikergran · 19/09/2026 18:07

Well, I believe he is coldly and calculatingly trying to milk his sister's death for his own financial gain.

BishBashBoshDumpling · 19/09/2026 17:55

Is his bank account a bit light or something?

Why a book? And why a deliberately inflammatory rage-baitey publicity stunt to desperately promote it?

I'm not remotely interested and I dont believe much of the population is either. Perhaps it'll sell better overseas.

BillyBites · 19/09/2026 17:51

He comes across as telling the truth but I also think it highly unlikely (King) Charles said what CS seems to recall. He was quite clearly horrified and devastated when Diana died.
So, yes, recollections probably varying wildly here. The most likely scenario in my opinion is that KC said something that CS misconstrued/misheard and it grew legs 30 years later and here we are.
But regardless, he’s an absolute bastard to include it in a book when it will greatly upset at least one nephew.

TunnocksOrDeath · 19/09/2026 17:41

Charles Spencer ignored his father’s will and gave his stepmother 48 hours to move out of Althorp when she was widowed, firing all her staff without notice and he & his sister refused to let her use luggage because it belonged to the “family”, so the woman who lost her husband 2 days earlier was chucked out of her home with her clothes in bin bags, and banned from taking any personal items unless she could “prove” they were hers.
He is in no position whatsoever to be publicly judging people on how they communicate with the recently bereaved.

TheFlyingPenguin · 19/09/2026 17:36

They are all as bad as each other. Diana was brought up to just marry into the Royal family by her mother after leaving (a private girls) school with no formal academic qualifications after failing her O-level exams twice. Her options were limited, led a sheltered life and this all caught up with her when the fairy tale she was brought up to believe in went t*ts up. She was not exactly the sharpest tool in the box or a good judge of character and did make some pretty bad decisions. like hanging out with the Al-fayeds in the first place (essentially Egyptian criminals).

The whole situation would have more integrity if Charles Spencer was not trying to peddle a book - just reeks of trying to dig up old dirt to make some money.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 19/09/2026 17:30

One's making money out of his sister's death, the other one is a parasite.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2026 17:28

BananaPeels · 19/09/2026 17:22

Well reports at the time said how upset he was from multiple different sources. Easy to rewrite history but the evidence was in the reports at the time. I am sure you think it’s a conspiracy and there is no way of persuading you otherwise but there was no way his face at the funeral was an act.

To be honest I couldn’t give a rat’s ass either way (and yes I know I’m commenting on this thread - I’m a historian and trying to look at it dispassionately) because I think the lots of them - the spencers as well as the windsors - are a bunch on entitled idiots with little or no idea about how normal people think or feel. That’s one of the main reasons why I think Charles probably did say those “monstrous” things. He has not had a normal life since the day he was born.

Nope don’t believe it in the slightest. Charles went straight to Paris to bring her home. He looked devastated at the funeral. they had actually been getting very well prior to her death and reached a truce. They seemed to both be moving on. I don’t believe for one second he responded like that. The fact is books need to be sold and there needs to be a salacious hook and here we are…

Who cares?
Really? This happened nearly 30 years ago. Divorce/acrimonious split.
Why dredge it all up now? Money/publicity/ whatever.
Charles is King. He will do that till the end of his days and then his son will take over. As it has been for more than 1000 years.

I do not think that the monarchy hasn't lasted 1000 years is a reason for this circus to carry on.

I am a near contemporary of Diana, so I am very conscious of the years of life she has lost largely due to being part of the RF and the monarchy....the fact she hasn't seen her sons grow up & marry, has never known her grandchildren. At the time of her wedding I was quite an ardent monarchist and celebrated alongside many millions of people, that very lavish and taxpayer-expensive wedding of the century which we were invited to believe was a love match.

It has since emerged that the wedding & marriage was a hollow farce all along, and other revelations over the years have shown the extent to which the RF lie and manipulate their images....hide the extent and sources of their wealth from the public, cover up misconduct and even crimes committed by their members.

And that is before we even get on to the anti-democratic nature of the institution itself. Do Charles, his son & his son's son even want to take over? We don't know and it seems they don't get a say.....the treatment of Diana, Harry, Meghan etc shows what will happen to them if they dare to fall out of line.

The Monarchy lost my support years ago & I am staying lost. And I am not alone.

Gertrudethechicken · 19/09/2026 17:13

Abolish them all. Parasites!

FaceIt · 19/09/2026 17:04

YABVU
He’s a money grabbing b*stard and always has been.
He has already made millions on the back of his sister’s death.

The ‘loving’ uncle is/must be causing a complete headfuck to poor William and Harry.

The only thing the selfish man has got to gain is money.

Quine0nline · 19/09/2026 14:53

Is there anyone who has gone through a messy and acrimonious divorce who would not be happy with the demise of their ex?

I don't believe LDS was the innocent unaware naive child we are and or were sold. "What attracted you to the immensely wealthy and future king?"

Why do I think of Jane Seymour and the Norfolk's in Henry 8th time when I think of the Spencers?

Diana might well have been happy & excited about the idea of becoming queen....but she was 19 at the time of her engagement, how much could she realistically have understood about what it would mean for her? Speaking personally I had very few clues about life at that age, had I made any irrevocable decisions then they would have likely proved to be disastrous.

It was up to the older & wiser people around her to guide her and it looks as though they failed to do that. Including Charles: he was a man in his 30s and we are supposed to believe that he was bullied/forced into this marriage? The only victim in this was Diana not Charles.

He may well have felt relieved, even happy, at some level, and couldn't help the way he felt. But he should have known better than to betray his feelings; we were talking about the future/current Head of State here, who we keep hearing is above reproach.

Are you serious ?

We only know what the Windsors want us to know.

We wouldn’t know about Andrew and Epstein if it weren’t for the partial release of the Epstein files in the USA . The Windsors only acted once we knew some of Andrew’s activities . They been covering up for decades. Epstein was first convicted of soliciting a minor in 2008.

They'd still be covering up now if they could.

We’ve had 30 years of the Windsors PR working against Diana in order to try to boost Camilla.

I think you are wrong that there will be little interest in the book.

News about Andrew / Epstein links started coming our about 25 yrs ago, didn't it? Cover-up didnt work v well. I v much doubt 2026 palace PR works against Diana! Have they learned nothing?

Charles W was probably feeling sorry for his boys when Diana died, relieved for himself but the outpouring of grief from the nation was the biggest problem. He wanted Camilla to be accepted and he knew it would take years! Camilla went into hiding then.

Camilla didn’t go into hiding when Diana died, what re you on about.

he might have said it he might not but 30 years later to come out with it to sell books? Because that’s what he’s going right? He’s trying to sell books make a bit of money the cobblers must be low, maybe it’s easier that selling a Bentley, whatever and, worse so he’s also dredging up and hurting his nephews. I don’t care if they are all royal or not it’s shitty.

Yes it’s not like he’s said I am still so upset about this. He’s done it for the cash ,as he’s learned from Harry. Put something shitty in there and idiots will part with their cash
