Charles was apparently giddily elated at Diana's death

I think it's a bit much really, to tell this to the world, when her two sons will hear of it.
If my sister died, and her ex-husband sounded elated about it when we spoke on the phone about it, I would never in a million years ever repeat it in a way that would risk their two children finding out. No matter how hurt I was by his reaction, my priority would be not to reveal this to their children.
I can't understand why he has told the world.

Princess Diana

Charles 'sounded giddily elated' after Diana died, Earl Spencer claims

Buckingham Palace has strongly pushed back against claims in a new book by the late Princess of Wales's brother.

I very much doubt he was
She was the mother of his two sons and died in tragic circunstances if he was so elated why did he walk behind her coffin?

It's protocol in a funeral like that. He made the sons do it too as he was worried about getting boo'd.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 19/09/2026 12:01

So he sat on this info for nearly 30 years and decides now is the time to reveal all? 🤔William and Harry have been through enough. I hope he finds it's worth it if/when they cut ties with the weasel.

MrsShawnHatosy · 19/09/2026 09:35

He’s also a self serving steaming hypocrite who swore to protect Diana’s sons at her funeral and has done the opposite.

Good point!! How on earth could he promise that and then publish this?!

plumming · 19/09/2026 11:58

I don’t believe Charles sounded elated and I don’t believe that the brother thought that. He’s coming across as cruel and a bit delusional. Fancy even thinking of putting this out there for w and h to hear, let alone actually doing it

SpottyDeckchair · 19/09/2026 11:55

To be honest I dont believe it.
Nobody is elatedd as someone else's death, particularly if it is the other parent of your much loved children.
I cannot imagine how awful it must have been to wake up your children to tell them their mother had died as a result of a car crash.
All any parent would be thinking of would be their children & protecting them from the media shit-storm that followed.

They should have kept the children in Scotland, away from the London hysteria as long as possible.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/09/2026 11:43

I didn’t read Harry’s book and I won’t be reading this one either. What is WRONG with these people? Don’t they even think about the hurt they’re inflicting on their own family? Appalling behaviour.

And now we’re going to have to put up with weeks of speculation, interviews and denials. Utterly ridiculous. It’s all money-grabbing nonsense from some of the most privileged people in the country.

Anonymouseposter · 19/09/2026 11:27

I hope no one buys his book. He is just after making some money and he’s vindictive.
We don’t know about the family arguments as we weren’t there and it’s none of our business.
I wish the media would deprive it of attention.
The king seems to be doing a good job of being the king and it must be horrible to have family members abetting the media in turning his life into a soap opera that probably has little similarity to reality.

Ukisgaslit · 19/09/2026 11:18

The more damning information is that Spencer says Charles ended with

‘Rest assured we will forget her soon enough’

A deeply shocking thing to say about the mother of your children

As a poster above points out the ‘children’ are now middle aged men.
Spencer has waited 30 years and has every right to say his piece now .

The Windsors have been having their say via the media for decades.

lizzyBennet08 · 19/09/2026 11:11

All these divorces must be expensive . He needs to include some juicy bits even if he has to make them up.. I'm not really a fan of Charles but I've seen multiple reports of royal reporters surprise at just how distraught he was around that time . I'm more inclined to believe those.

MargaretThursday · 19/09/2026 11:04

I can't understand why you've joined MN to post this. Or have you name changed to hide your previous posts?

I assume you never looked at any of the photos of this "giddily elated" man around that time...

BIWI · 19/09/2026 09:59

For the love of God - how many threads do we need to have about this? And why @Tiramisuuu didn't you post this in the Royal Family topic?

Bouncywaves · 19/09/2026 09:55

I don't think Prince Charles would have felt like that. His two sons were left without a mother. Her death meant it would be years before Camilla and he could be together or married. They was nothing to be giddily elated about. He previously talked about he and the Princess of Wales both trying to save their marriage.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/09/2026 09:52

Sometimes people react oddly to tragedy and death. Laughter can be a common reaction, for example.

Doesn’t mean he was actually happy about it, even if he did seem to act that way at some point.

Aren’t the royal family generally known for playing their cards close to their chest too? It seems unlikely he’d display elation in from if her brother if that was how he genuinely felt.

Seems a bit much to take it up now anyway, as others have said.

whiteroseredrose · 19/09/2026 09:46

‘Sounded’. That is interpretation not fact.

Justaquestionplease · 19/09/2026 09:45

I believe Earl Spencer. I think ordinary members of the public should stop judging the royals by their own normal person standards and thinking that deep down they are just like the rest of us....they are probably far more obnoxious and entitled than we can even imagine.

nomas · 19/09/2026 09:40

I can believe it, Charles/Diana divorce was deeply acrimonious. Charles would have felt like he had won.

MookieBananas · 19/09/2026 09:37

And I suspect he has had a lifetime of watching people cash in on his sister's name and thought he needs to get himself some. Not least because of the fore-mentioned expensive divorces.

Bouncywaves · 19/09/2026 09:37

I wonder if Earl Spencer's various divorced wives and a discarded fiancée were similarly giddily elated to be free of him.

MrsShawnHatosy · 19/09/2026 09:35

Housewife2010 · 19/09/2026 07:51

Charles Spencer is a bitter, vindictive man who has had to pay out for several expensive divorces and the maintenance of a huge estate. He didn't go to his daughters' weddings and wouldn't allow Diana to have a post divorce bolt hole on his Althorp estate. William has asked that his mother's memory be left to rest yet his uncle has taken advantage of the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of her death to publish his salacious book. I'm going to take his revelations with several kilos of salt.

He’s also a self serving steaming hypocrite who swore to protect Diana’s sons at her funeral and has done the opposite.

MookieBananas · 19/09/2026 09:34

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 19/09/2026 09:01

If you did want to celebrate your ex-wife’s death to someone, who would you choose? Your family, your mate… or her brother?

Exactly this. I cannot imagine a scenario where a person with the public profile of the then Prince Charles would gloat to a brother he knows is already angered by the RF and who by virtue of being the brother would have the ear of the press. It truly does not make objective sense- especially when you consider that PC had spent an entire lifetime of being trained to watch what he says, and to whom.

Additup · 19/09/2026 09:19

I have little interest in the royal family but imo Earl Spencer should be ashamed of himself for raking up alleged muck from 30 years ago.

x2boys · 19/09/2026 09:05

Clarabell77 · 19/09/2026 09:00

For show/duty/public approval.

No doubt
But i still dont think he was overjoyed at her death
Their marriage might have been disastrous but he had two sons who loved her.

SleeplessInWherever · 19/09/2026 09:04

I really think we should leave this woman alone now.

I was 7 when she died, I’m now the same age as she was then, with a child older than I was.

Unless you’re one of her children, at this point she really ought to be left to be dead in peace.

Like enough money and press drama wasn’t made out of her when she was alive, she has to be hounded nearly 30 years after death as well.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 19/09/2026 09:02

Also, this would have been catnip to the press 30 years ago. Why has Spencer waited this long? Money, that's why. He is exaggerated and embellishing for book sales. Wouldn't trust the man to lie straight in bed as far as I'm concerned.

And journalists are saying things like "What does this tell us about the royal family today?" No, what it tells us is that you, journalists, haven't learned a thing after they chased someone to her death 30 years ago. Here they are still spreading gossip and helping some pointless rich toff can pay for the upkeep of his rotting pile.
