Charles was apparently giddily elated at Diana's death

I think it's a bit much really, to tell this to the world, when her two sons will hear of it.
If my sister died, and her ex-husband sounded elated about it when we spoke on the phone about it, I would never in a million years ever repeat it in a way that would risk their two children finding out. No matter how hurt I was by his reaction, my priority would be not to reveal this to their children.
I can't understand why he has told the world.

Princess Diana

Charles 'sounded giddily elated' after Diana died, Earl Spencer claims

Buckingham Palace has strongly pushed back against claims in a new book by the late Princess of Wales's brother.

The Queen tried to do exactly that.
Then she got piloried by the great British public for staying in Balmoral with those poor boys who she was trying to protect.
She bowed to public and media pressure and came back to London, William & Harry in tow. I was never able to understand why.
I wanted her to turn around to the press and public who were demanding she leaves Scotland with the boys and tell them all to fuck off.

I think the issue was there was no push back from the RF about that, if it were me, a stern announcement would have been made that 2 young kids had just lost their mother and Scotland was right where they were going to stay until the funeral and that was that.

I've had people confidently tell me how I feel based on my face or tone of voice and have been completely wrong.

This is the weakest of sauce to sell a book.

I get this a lot, I have a gurney expressive face that for some reason is usually the 'incorrect' face for what Im actually feeling.

I dont believe a word of this.

DinnerinfrontoftheTV · 19/09/2026 23:15

I doubt KC was elated that the mother of his children was dead.

We can’t know what he felt. But whatever he felt, it seems highly, highly unlikely that someone who spent their whole life practicing composure would let a comment like that rip to their ex-brother in law.

It’s not really credible, is it?

Charles Spencer has a long history of being self serving and callus towards his family.

Chaz probably did say it. He's a bad tempered old f##t just like his father

Yep and more bowing and scraping to these awful people for God knows how many more generations.

To be honest I dont believe it.
Nobody is elatedd as someone else's death, particularly if it is the other parent of your much loved children.
I cannot imagine how awful it must have been to wake up your children to tell them their mother had died as a result of a car crash.
All any parent would be thinking of would be their children & protecting them from the media shit-storm that followed.

They should have kept the children in Scotland, away from the London hysteria as long as possible.

The Queen tried to do exactly that.

How relevant is it now? Raking over old coals for what? It's so gross. Let her rest in peace.

Orangemintcream · 19/09/2026 13:21

Regardless of what KC may or may not have said Earl Spencer is a horrible grubby little man trying to make money from the death of a woman and doesn’t care that this will likely upset her living children - his nephew.

An utterly reprehensible individual.

Whatafustercluck · 19/09/2026 13:15

Whatever your views about Harry, even he has written about his compassion for Charles in the days following Diana's death - particularly the way in which he broke the news to Harry when he woke him to tell him. He paints a picture of shock, and the realisation that it must have been incredibly difficult to break that awful news to his sons. Given how emotionally restrained Charles's reaction to his sons was, I find it hard to believe he'd have had the capacity to be elated.

shecanbe · 19/09/2026 12:59

Who was bailed out to the tune of £12 million and why was this?

Pedallleur · 19/09/2026 12:57

The Palace has to deny it (obviously) but let's not forget it was a public outcry that made the Queen return to London after Diana's death. The optics of lounging around in Balmoral were not good. Also the beloved Queen then bails out her son to the tune of 12 million pounds. Maybe Charles didn't say anything but Phillip didn't hold back at times and maybe a chance comment slipped out. The RF aren't great on empathy,

shecanbe · 19/09/2026 12:57

'Giddily elated' is a strange turn of phrase. It's all strange.

olivepicanto · 19/09/2026 12:52

YAB so U

There's a whole board for this shite

HambleTheDoll · 19/09/2026 07:48

I doubt anyone cares but I know a few who would have the same reaction if their Ex died.

The kids don’t need to know though. That Earl of Spencer should look at his own messy house.

He's not the Earl of Spencer, he's the Earl of Althorp.

LoisGriffinskitchen · 19/09/2026 12:52

I well remember that death and Charles wasn’It “giddily elated”. He went to Paris and escorted her body home . He did what the father of any two children who have just lost their beloved mother should do. He looked very serious and shocked as I recall.

He’s cashing in on his sisters memory, and pulling a Harry in making it scandalous. I don’t beleive for one moment Charles was elated and I don’t believe Diana would want that said.

i get he likely needs or wants the money but absolute shame on him.

i think Harry is also doing some project to cash in on his mother, such grubby distasteful shameful behaviour.

I knew it wouldnt be long untill somehow a poster Harry was shoe horned into it

It will all soon be somehow Meghans fault.

BatchCookBabe · 19/09/2026 12:17

Also this. Despicable behaviour from a bitter, angry little individual who refuses to let his beautiful sister Diana's memory rest. How nasty he is. Poor William and Harry, having to put up with a vile uncle like him.

Poor William, I think there is a chance Harry will want to beleive it. And also be thinking at least someone else is writing a salacious novel to cash in and will take the pressure off him.

LezUlez · 19/09/2026 12:45

I remember my DB smiling as he informed me of our DGM'S death. Even at the age of 14, I knew it was because he was in shock.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 19/09/2026 12:40

Conspiracies aside, I’m no royalist but I don’t think anyone can criticise his immediate reaction to such startling news, whatever it was in reality.

Have you all never responded inappropriately to bad news?

And her brother may have felt that was how Charles was feeling but it’s only his opinion. I have an awful boss and I always think the very worse of her - mostly I’m right to, but not always 🤣

By publishing this exploitative book, Charles Spencer is behaving no differently to a thug who lands a punch outside a pub after too many pints. Death provokes all sorts of reactions in people and it's easy to judge. Well done Charles Spencer for stoking all of this up for your nephews and sisters.

I can't understand why you've joined MN to post this. Or have you name changed to hide your previous posts?

I assume you never looked at any of the photos of this "giddily elated" man around that time...

This. There are multiple threads on this already.

And I don't believe a word that man (Charles Spencer) says.

As @Housewife2010 said· (Today 07:51)

Charles Spencer is a bitter, vindictive man who has had to pay out for several expensive divorces and the maintenance of a huge estate. He didn't go to his daughters' weddings and wouldn't allow Diana to have a post divorce bolt hole on his Althorp estate.

William has asked that his mother's memory be left to rest yet his uncle has taken advantage of the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of her death to publish his salacious book. I'm going to take his revelations with several kilos of salt.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

My mother was over the fucking moon when her first husband died. Got straight on the phone to her solicitor to make sure the Decree Absolute didn't go through (she'd just received the Decree Nisi) and laughed her head off that she'd 'won'.

However, she didn't do that in front of their shared children and there would have been absolutely no good purpose or outcome in telling them about it at any point afterwards.
