If your child ate with their mouth open, would you tell them?

I do think adults talk with their mouths full more commonly than they used to, or it’s become more accepted. You see people on tv reality programmes doing it all the time. Not full cement mixer style though.

Yes I do correct table manners in my children. They’re pretty good for mouths closed but need constant reminders on using cutlery properly and touching their food with their hands. The trouble is my mum thinks that putting her hand in front of her mouth means it’s perfectly polite to continue talking to us with a mouth full of food. If we’re eating with my children in tow I’ll say things like “sorry mum I can’t hear you” or “it’s okay enjoy your food and then tell us” as I know I’d embarrass her if I was direct but equally I feel sorry for my children not saying anything when I’m correcting them!

Absolutely. And also if they eat with their elbow on the table and slouching. No need to tell them off or say it unkindly. I tell them mouth open is off putting to others, and an elbow on the table whilst slouching looks like your hosts/friends/whoever you're dining with are boring you. And no phone at the table if we eat as a family (not to be an old-fashioned idiot but because I quite like a conversation amongst actual humans).

I used to tell my children to close their mouths because it wasn’t a washing machine so I didn’t need to see what was inside it. Recently, I heard DS2 saying the same thing to 2yo DGS, who does have very good table manners tbf.

We’re on holiday atm and there’s so many children in restaurants, eating with their mouths open, while watching some crap on a screen.

My kids tell my husband not to do that! Probably because they heard me aaying it a million times.

Its socially unacceptable. The worst. Teach them. Tell them. Not being able to eat is grim.

Two of my three have diagnosed Misophonia, so there’s no way I’d ever have to tell them 😁

There's clearly a bias in who is responding to this thread. My DD can't stand seeing people chew with their mouths open, it makes her feel sick. She can't really eat at school as a result. So many of her friends chew with their mouths open, so clearly a significant proportion of parents are not training their children properly.

Of course. My daughter eats properly but I wonder when my son decided that eating like a pig at a trough was appropriate! I’m constantly reminding him to slow down and take smaller bites. He does eat with his mouth closed though.

I tell my children every mealtime - literally. It's not working. They have started telling each other to eat with their mouths closed while eating with their own mouths open.

Of course. When DD was little she needed to be told and reminded often. I can vaguely remember when I was that young being told by my parents and it seemed impossibly hard. Until it wasn't. Certainly by the time DD was at school she had mastered it.

It is appalling when you come across an adult who never seems to have been taught this. In a previous job I used to sit opposite a young man who ate like a cement mixer and then burped all afternoon. I always assumed he took in a lot of air because of the way he ate. Amazingly he had a girlfriend.

Mate try eating in spoons. Now I love spoons, go to our local at least twice a week but the number of people who chew with their mouths open. Last we there were two naturally stunning young ladies clearly sisters with their partners. They were so good looking everyone was looking at them. Then they started to eat!

Another pet hate is people who talk with food in their mouths. Sil does it continuously. I hate her anyway but yuk.

I distinctly remember as a child, being babysat by my Godmother at her house, where she reprimanded me for eating with my mouth open during lunch. She was disgusted.
