Apparently £63 is unreasonable to spend after a cancelled flight!

I had an easyjet flight cancelled 4 weeks ago.

I submitted for both compensation and refund of expenses. The £63 was made up of dinner the night of the cancelled flight, lunch the next day, buses to and from the airport and a taxi the night of the cancelled flight.

In my mind that’s a really reasonable spend. I’m obviously going to challenge it but AIBU here?!

Is there a reply address? Its not compensation it's reimbursement for expenses absolutely should reimburse. Keep pursuing. Im waiting for mine from recent incident. Wasn't Easyjet's fault, but they are still liable for it.

skanky company. race to the bottom. get the train in future

JustMyView13 · 19/09/2026 07:32

Give them one opportunity to reconsider and notify them you’ll take them to the small claims court if a suitable resolution isn’t reached. Don’t waste your time worrying, it’s quick and easy to do, and you can claim your costs of court back from them.

I see. They’ll probably say you should have eaten at home if you got a bus back. Same with the lunch.
If you were supposed to be at the hotel, then claim a day back from the hotel from your insurance.

But - can you claim compensation overall for then flight delay? Or does it not count as it was ATC?

Why are you struggling so much to understand this situation

Lancasterel · 18/09/2026 23:23

The cost seems very reasonable for what you’ve had.

I would just keep on at them, emailing daily, until they give in and give you the money back!

Rhubarb24 · 18/09/2026 23:04

Where was your flight from?

Similar experience here. Flight home cancelled and easyjet groundstaff more than useless. Finally got a replacement flight for the next day but the portal wouldn't let me book a hotel so had to book that myself.

Me and 6 year old DD got a taxi to the hotel, had a soft drink each and then a taxi back to the airport the next morning with a Starbucks breakfast to the total tune of €48 for both of us.

Easyjet rejecting the expenses for refreshments and taxis (approved the hotel expense of €110 though!) Because they were "post flight disruption arrangments", well pre flight disruption I didn't need any of those things, did I???

Honestly a joke and I'm arguing it for the principle because they obviously just hope that people give up.

It’s pathetic isn’t it? They cancel the flights then whine that they have to pay out!

If your flight is cancelled, you may be entitled to the rights set out in sections 2 and 3. You may also be entitled to compensation under section 1 of this notice EXCEPT when:

  • The cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken, which may include (but not limited to) air traffic control, weather, civil unrest, terrorist alerts and security alerts, strike action and unexpected flight safety shortcomings.

That's for the £220 (minimum, depending on distance) compensation on top of your expenses, not for your expenses.

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/09/2026 22:48

What time was your cancelled flight? I claimed for breakfast and lunch the day after, £74 but nothing from the night of the flight as it was an evening flight and we would have been buying food out anyway. They paid it really quickly.

I’m currently trying to claim back costs after getting stranded overnight on a Greek island due to widespread flight cancellations. No EasyJet reps in the airport so we were left to our own devices. They are refusing to pay the hotel costs as it was 5*. It was the cheapest available hotel by a few hundred quid and it’s an area where there really aren’t any budget hotels I could have booked. They are also refusing my food costs (€50 which was food for 3 people) saying we should have been given vouchers. We weren’t as there was no one there to help us! I won’t fly with them again as they really have been awful.

They were so incredibly rude at the airport when our flight was cancelled. As if we were a nuisance! I’m so sorry this happened to you too

I would think their guide for the price of food and drink ought really to be on a par with the eye-watering charges they make on their in-flight menu.

Right?! I think £15 for lunch is fairly reasonable!

I was once delayed for over 2 hours on a Ryanair flight, we’d boarded the plane and were sat on the tarmac. They wouldn’t even give us a bottle of water and wanted to charge. Can’t remember the reason for the delay, flight attendants spoke poor English and had no idea of their obligations to provide Food/drink

The last time ATC had a meltdown I got stuck in Belfast, flights with Easyjet. My flight should have been Monday evening, they couldn’t get me on a flight until Wednesday morning.

I just went back to look at expenses and they paid for 2 nights in a hotel (I booked the hotel, they reimbursed) plus £81 to cover my meals for the delay, and they didn’t argue those costs. I don’t think your request is unreasonable at all.

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 18/09/2026 18:05

I’ve just had a similar response from EasyJet for a cancelled flight. We travelled from Bristol to Gatwick by taxi then train (which saved EasyJet a packet). They’ve paid for the train fares and one taxi from Gatwick to the hotel (hotel booked via EasyJet app).

They have refused to pay for a pizza and a couple of drinks at the hotel (we were provided with a curry ‘buffet’ which my autistic DD wouldn’t eat). We also bought breakfast at the airport as the flight was at 7.00 am so missed hotel breakfast. They refused one of the Gatwick hotel taxis and the Bristol train station taxi. I’m going to resubmit the claims and see. I’ve already spent the money but I’ve saved them loads of money getting a train instead of a taxi to Gatwick and they’re refusing to pay reasonable food and taxi expenses.

Morecoffeewanted · 18/09/2026 18:04

We used the ADR website for cancelled Easyjet flights and expenses.

Easyjet claimed on one that the delays were due to weather and ATC but I took photos of the departure board to show that other airlines were departing at the same time our plane was cancelled. They also quibbled on our expenses.

Easyjet in my experience will even make a seperate bogus defence for different people on the same flight.

I had to obtain a final "deadlock" email from Easyjet and then I opened an ADR claim. It took a long time to settle as Easyjet kept applying for extensions to their time to reply.

In the end our claims was settled either because Easy jet failed to mount a defence or the ADR found in our favour. We obtained compensation and all expenses on all our claims.

ADR was very slow and closed one of our cases prematurely due to a system error. There was also a lack of communication from them and messages didn't turn up. I think that they have IT problems.

It seems to be common for airlines (in my experience) to claim it was ATC or something out of their control but the onus is on them to prove it.

Compensation is different from reimbursement of legitimate expenses

Yes. And I’ve made the distinction between this multiple times.

For the avoidance of all doubt. I have made two claims:

  1. for compensation. This has been denied and I’ve submitted a formal complaint.
  2. for expenses. These are the £63 worth of expenses that have been deemed as unreasonable.

No, I said the compensation had been denied due to it being out of their control. The expenses have been denied due to them being “unreasonable”

The question someone asked was "So it was rejected? What does it say in their T&Cs for compo for cancelled flights?"

You replied "Compensation has been outright denied for being out of their control, these are statutory obligations and they’re shirking them b"

When your entire thread is about your expenses being refused, I don't think it's unreasonable for people to assume that's what you were talking about.

Sounds stressful, hope you get it sorted!

whatistakinghimsolong · 18/09/2026 17:39

Mattieispregnant · 18/09/2026 17:38

You would be claiming for expenses not compensation. You wouldn’t be entitled to compensation but you are entitled to expenses (which is what your claim is)

I’m well aware of what I’m entitled to, thank you Mattie. I am challenging both as I do not believe that the flight cancellation was out of their control. But that’s a matter for another thread.

OP posts:
OneTicklishPoster · 18/09/2026 17:39

I would imagine they will pay up once you challenge it
Usually I have had the evening meal and breakfast covered as part of the hotel deal with easyjet when flights are cancelled, so I think they often have a deal with the hotel, but if noone told you that how were you supposed to know? They will eventually refund. All charges sound reasonable.

HereIAmAlive · 18/09/2026 17:38

GinAndJuice99 · 18/09/2026 16:40

I know you're talking about expenses and not compensation for a delayed flight here. I would like to mention though that Ryanair once claimed to me that a long delay to a flight was caused by circumstances beyond their control and they weren't liable. I disputed this and went to Aviation ADR who found in my favour and the airline had to pay up by law.

I don't know the circumstances of your flight delay but it's worth considering. Aviation ADR is a totally legit organisation - not a third party operator hoping for a cut

I had this with Ryanair too - they cancelled my flight due to a shortage of pilots and tried to blame it on an ATC strike. We had to spend £1000 on new flights home from Portugal because all Ryanair offered us were flights a week (!) later, and it took us going to dispute resolution and chasing them for about 9 months before we got our money back. Suffice to say, I have never flown with them since!
