Hi everyone,
I am a 26-year-old mum, and my 4-year-old son has just started Reception. We have been in the UK for 5 years, but I originally grew up in Nepal. In my culture, looking after each other’s children as a collective "village" is completely natural.
My son is quite tiny because he is a picky eater, and he used to be very shy. To help him feel strong and build his confidence, I decided to model friendly behaviour at the gates. I talk to his classmates (both boys and girls) and help them out so my son learns it is normal and good to be kind to everyone. I also volunteered for a day at the school recently, so I already know most of the children in his section.
If I see the children struggling to roll up their sleeves, or if their water bottles or bags fall, my instinct is to step in. I always ask the children first, "Do you need help?", and they happily say, "Yes please!" and chat with me. This approach has worked beautifully my son is now so confident and happy to go to school.
However, I know British culture is much more reserved. Am I overstepping by being this helpful and talkative to the children, even if the parents are watching? Do I need to force myself to be a more reserved UK parent, or is it okay to keep being friendly?
Thanks in advance!school
