To buy a dry robe as a winter coat?!

I've got one of those regatta ones and I'm super happy with it. This will be it's third winter and I live near the NW coast and have dogs to walk so no apologies!
I HAVE worn it for work, there's a long walk in, and survived the Dementor nickname with warm dry legs and the rest of it. I've yet to appear on the DRW Facebook page, to my knowledge...

So much that when I went on a summer holiday to the Lake District and realised I'd forgotten mine i bought a second one.

I have a regatta one and the hood is small but I've never known anything better for wet weather. Very good for dog walks in the wet and the cold.

I wear mine with crocs...

I have lived in south west and you are wrong about 99% howling wind and rain.

I’ve got a copy cat version in kids size from a high street store. Perhaps the best £60 I’ve ever spent. Going for a kids age 15 means it isn’t quite so bulky but is still roomy.

Is it stylish, no. Would I wear it for a nice lunch, theatre trip or shopping, no. But, do I wear it when watching kids rugby in a blizzard, or hockey in torrential rain, or to walk the dog over hill and dale in the depths of winter, or on a blowy beach in December, yes.

I’d buy a slightly cheaper version which in my experience is still excellent and not quite so bulky, and then with the extra cash perhaps a second coat for when it isn’t so wet / wild / outdoorsy.

I love mine! It's perfect for dog walks.
I can put as many layers as I need under it so great for any wet weather.
Great pockets too.

I’ve got an off-brand one. I’m very sensitive to fabrics and have been unable to find a suitable winter coat for years, so this does the trick. I was outside for a lot of my working time until fairly recently so it was ideal. Am currently looking for a lightweight long waterproof coat as well, but this is proving impossible.

I have a cheapo Tesco dry robe, bought 3 years ago and worn regularly each winter since. I got it in khaki green, it looks ok as dry robes go! I wouldn't like the regatta one purely because of the writing on the back. (If I wear an obvious brand name/logo I think they should pay me to advertise).

Lots of people saying they billow, well I bought mine in a size small, I'm not small by any means but it just fits me better. I love mine, I have a much smarter winter coat but I only wore that twice last year, once to a funeral and once to a very fancy restaurant. Otherwise it's comfort all the way for me.

it's fine. I completely disagree however. They wouldn't be so popular if they were not practical.

I wouldn't go on a hike wearing one obviously but I wouldn't wear a coat anyway.

I think the reason they are everywhere is because people buy them for a specific purpose, but find them so comfortable they end up wearing them all the time.

I don't have shares in any company, so I don't care what people wear, but it's just not true they are impractical for normal walks, dog walks etc.

Also live in the south west in one of the wettest parts. A friend of mine does exactly this and wears her dry robe as a winter coat. I have a more traditional coat- Didrickson- they are expensive but mine is on its 7th year now. It's a Swedish brand for fishing clothing I think originally-they are impenetrable to rain. Lots on Vinted.

As the owner of a dry robe that I use for its intended purpose (as a changing robe) I can confirm you are correct. It's not at all practical as an everyday coat.

I am a fully fledged dry robe w**nker. Yep there’s a Facebook group spotting people wearing them not as changing robes.
I wear it all winter and have never been cold or wet with it. (Apart from after swimming obviously)
it’s not elegant- you look like a tent- but I don’t care as I’m dry.
Who cares what someone else is wearing anyway? As long as you like it.

They have a DryRobe called Nexus now that is supposed to be more parka-like in appearance. That might be right for you?

I actually have a regatta "dryrobe". My legs still get soaked unless the coat is not zipped up and I am just holding it round me. I haven't had this issue with other such coats (I wear mine for dog walking and sorting the horses out, so it does really get tested).
But because of that (and the hood is small, I would not recommend it.

I had a seasalt Janelle for years, which was great if a bit dull in colour (it was medium dark blue). And then I discovered the existence of the dryrobe back in 2020... I have the camo green with the hot pink fleece on the inside. It's the best coat I've ever had, hands down. I realised very quickly that no other coat would get a look in so I gave away the Janelle and pretty much every other coat I own apart from some faux fur coats I wear for formal wear or parties. I layer up with a packable down jacket with no hood when it is very cold.

I couldn't give one flying f* about what other people think. The coat is warm, long, waterproof, excellent hood and huge pockets. I am looking for another dryrobe now as I've lost weight so I need to sell my Medium size one and get a Small.

Get the coat that does the job for you OP! Everyone else can go swivel.

They billow on everyone I've seen wearing one.

It's not about how daft they look either it's the practicalities. If you want to shove one on after surfing or swimming before changing and dashing to your car fine, dog walking in the wind not so much. Loads of waterproof coats more suitable imo.

If you feel happy with it then go for it. I'm also in the south west and they are great for keeping warm and dry in the autumn/winter weather!

they're not though. Big they are, but they are heavy and long enough so they are not flappy at all.

I’ve got one of these too. Brilliant for standing in the rain watching the kids footy matches. Massive fleece lined pockets too!

Why do they care though if people want to be warm and dry?

So many waterproof coats to choose from, dry robes are too big and flappy. Go out in the driving rain and it'll be billowing about like a parachute.

Haven’t rtft but if you’re not bothered about what it looks like and only care about being warm and dry then why are you worrying if it’s wanky or not? Who cares? If it’s practical for you then go for it! Personally I quite like the Regatta one and to my untrained eye it just looks like a winter coat at first glance. Unlike the actual ones that are completely emblazoned with ‘dry robe’ all over them.
