To buy a dry robe as a winter coat?!

I wear my dry robe as a winter coat. I am sure I do look like a sack of spuds but I look like a sack of warm and dry spuds. I can stuff loads of jumpers under it too. I also have over shoe crampon things that I wear in bad ice and plenty of other unfashionable and downright ugly clothing that allows me to be comfortable.

Lands End Squall coat is quite popular on the touch line. It's not stylish, but not unsightly and does the job.

I have the passenger changing robe - it isn't waterproof but water repellant so is ok in light showers. I got it because it is less bulky than the dry robes but still v cosy. I love it. It's my cold weather coat for dog walking and also great all year for the beach/loch after swimming etc.

DH has a dry robe and it is just that it better because it is waterproof but it is bulkier.

I don't care what anyone thinks if I am out in mine - i am warm and cannot see anyone past the big hood.

I dont understand why they attract such derision/sneering? More so than other items of clothing? Loads of practical things are not outrageously stylish, but don't get nearly as much grief!

To be honest, just give in to the fact they’re quite ugly and people are snobby about them. They’re great coats. I have a regatta one and I bought it solely for use after swimming… I rapidly began using it all the time last winter when it seemed to never stop raining. It’s warm, easy to chuck on with whatever you have on, long, waterproof and not too expensive. I’ve also been so grateful of the fact it’s oversized when I’ve needed to wrap a small child in there with me who is cold, also when the same small child wet herself on me meaning I needed to change my piss drenched trousers and knickers in a busy car park, and its also come in handy for spreading out on damp grass for us to sit on!!

I bought an absolutely hideous thing last year, basically it looks like a big black sleeping bag with a hood but thankfully not quilted, it comes down to my calves and keeps me warm and dry.
Those were my two requirements, who cares about fashion when it is pissing down with rain, gale force winds and freezing cold??
A bonus is that I could suddenly double in size and it would still fit 🤣🤣

You said that it's for commuting. How are you commuting? They are so big and bulky that you'd probably take up 1 and a half seats on a bus.

I tried one on. I'm 5ft tall and size 16/18. My god I looked ridiculous even now I keep laughing at how I looked.

I’m in wales and have the mountain warehouse version. I couldn’t give a shit what I look like. I wear it to walk the dog and watch the children’s football matches. I am warm and dry in it and that’s all I care about!

My husband has the most amazing north face coat. Really warm and waterproof. It was so good he didn’t have to wear the provided kit when we went to Lapland. I’ve got my eye on one from there next time I replace a coat as I was really impressed by how well his one kept him warm and dry in pretty extreme temps.

I bought one last year exactly for this reason, I bought my normal size (large) and it drowned me, sent it back and bought a small and it is exacty what I wanted. Go for it, just buy asmaller size.

They are wanky but luckily I'm of an age where I literally couldn't care less about what others think. My Dry Robe is the only coat I've ever had that is truly waterproof and warm, and I'd spent thousands over the years trying to find a good coat until i gave in and tried a Dry robe.

I think you should get one! Don’t care what people think. When I see them I think about how nice it would be to wrap it round and be snuggly. If you want one, get one. Come back and show us.

I also have a Janelle (as do several of my friends). It is fabulous at keeping me dry as it’s really long and had a great hood. It needs some extra layers on a cold day, but I prefer that as otherwise it wouldnt get worn as much as I can’t tolerate a big heavy cost unless it’s completely Baltic outside.

I wear one to walk to to work in the rain. I'm in the south west too. It's the only coat I've found long enough to keep most of my legs dry. It ys extremely hideous though and I do feel rather wanky wearing it but warm and dry which is better than sitting at work soaked.

I bough Regatta ones for my family and they were so thin, shit quality plasticky sounding when they moved. I then bought Beach Bum ones and they’re much thicker.

My only issue stopping me getting one is that there is nothing natural in them so the warmth level likely won’t be high. It’s just a fleecy shell (when compared to my down-filled north face parka).

The info says it’s water-resistant. If it chucks it down, it’s not going to keep you properly dry.

I live in the SW we live in Dry Robes from October to March- I don’t care if I look ugly or whatever - mine is toasty warm great for doing horses, dog walks, standing around at rugby etc

Maybe Gen Z/Alpha will adopt the Dryrobe like they did the Croc!

Another vote for the Seasalt Janelle coat. They have 20% off on their website at the moment. It's not as warm as they claim it is but mine is roomy enough to add a jumper underneath and that makes it very cosy (and more versatile as it doesn't have to be freezing cold for me to wear it). It's brilliant in the rain, keeps me totally dry.

I have a dry robe for when I go swimming and paddle boarding. I wouldn't wear it as a coat because it's far too bulky to be practical. It's brilliant for what it is - a changing robe.

I am a bit obsessed with coats and have just bought a North Face Arctic Parka for freezing football sidelines, there are quite a few on Vinted for around £100. I have a seasalt Janelle and don't really get the hype, I like the length, but the peak on the hood looks a bit ridiculous and it's not that warm.

I do have a dryrobe type coat from Tesco, it was half price, I think because it's leopard print(!) and it's the snuggliest, warmest thing, but I feel a bit, erm, conspicuous wearing it!

Have also had a Rab deep cover parka in the past that I would recommend!

Have worn my pink camo dryrobe for last 3 winters and will do this one too. It's warm, waterproof and I can layer up underneath if I want to and never feel squashed. Absolutely no fucks to give about looking stupid, the ones that look silly imo are the ones freezing their arse off in something they consider classier. There are loads of options out there now so just find one you like and enjoy a warmer winter.

I go open water swimming through the winter so have a dry robe (actually a Wild Mouse changing robe) for that. I also have a coat, bought cheap on Vinted, that is so lovely that strangers regularly stop me on the street and ask where I got it. When it's cold, rainy and windy, I will always pick the changing robe. Also the pockets are so big that you can fit a bottle of champagne in one pocket and a bottle of whiskey in it's tin in the other and still have space for more, as I discovered on my way to a new year's eve party.
