AIBU to wonder how other people see me?

Does anyone else wonder what other people think of them?
I once read that a different version of you exists in every person’s mind.

I can’t get my head around that one, I’m always thinking in a negative way about myself so I assume others are too.

I would think the vast majority of people wonder what others think of them; that's a universal experience, surely?

Blimms · 17/09/2026 15:20

The more important question is probably why do you see yourself so negatively?

Releasemeplease · 17/09/2026 15:35

This has been a problem for me all my life OP. Total self consciousness so whatever I do i see myself from outside my body. When I interact with people I'm continually thinking about what they are seeing and thinking when they look at me. I just wish i was invisible

The majority of people are so focused on themselves that they don’t even think about others more than fleetingly.

unless they have something to gain from focusing intently on others. If they are it’s for flattering reasons even if they don’t want to admit that

Mysticguru · 17/09/2026 16:24

Nope.

glendabrownlow · 17/09/2026 16:30

Normally, it seems fairly clear how some others see me. Some seem to like me, and some don't seem so keen. The older I get, the less I care what they think, although I would always try to be decent and fair.

Catza · 17/09/2026 16:31

Never crossed my mind. It seems to be an utterly pointless exercise since I can't actually know what they are thinking so any "educated guess" is based on what I am thinking about myself. Like, indeed, in your case - you think negatively of yourself so you can only assume others do too. In the actual fact you don't know and can't know and even if you knew, you wouldn't be able to change it. So your time is better spent elsewhere.

IwanttoWFH · 17/09/2026 16:35

I don’t really care what people think about me. I’m often misunderstood and I’m a marmite character. I’ve been told I’m “hard to get to know”, whereas I’m an excellent judge of character and suss people out very quickly.

I’m not particularly keen on people in general, so I really don’t worry what they think of me! It does get easier with age.

Awww, that's such a shame you feel that way. I have always been an over-thinker too.
You know you're only in this life once and the older I get the more I think, whatever anyone thinks of me is none of my business. I know I'm a good, kind and loyal person, bit mouthy at times 😂but decent.
Put yourself first and don't give a toss, as long as your not nasty.
More importantly. Be kind to you 💜x

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/09/2026 16:40

I can’t remember who said it, but I subscribe to the view that it’s none of my business what other people think of me.

ThatKindCrab · 17/09/2026 16:44

Were you bullied, or perhaps put under a lot of pressure to achieve as a child? That can have lifelong repercussions… unfortunately. It’s hard. It’s ok just to exist, you have as much right as anyone to do so. I suspect most people just don’t think about the kinds of things you are saying - you sound fascinating. Most people are not so self aware.

Random321 · 17/09/2026 17:08

No. I don't really care.

I'm good enough for me.

There will always be people more intelligent, higher earning, prettier, slimmer, taller, more patient etc. what ever other matrix you want you use as measurement but it's totally irrelevant to me.

I'm fully aware of my flaws and improved some of them. Others I even like!

I'm happy with me - what I do, how I treat people, the way I life. It's good enough for me and if anyone thinks different that's their issue.

I also don't take criticism from anyone I woulfn't tske advice from.

More importantly, where's your self criticism coming from? I doubt it's justified in any way.

wiredandtired · 17/09/2026 17:11

There's a saying which has stuck with me - "What other people think of you is none of your business".

Everyone wonders but really, we can never know unless people tell us (and even then they might not tell us the whole truth).

No point getting hung up on it really.

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/09/2026 17:21

There are few people in my life whose opinion of me matters that much. I do my best, try to treat people well and live what I consider to be a good life. I have no control over other people’s thoughts, so I try not to worry about it.

Walkacrossthesand · 17/09/2026 17:49

I do, sometimes - because I’m a single older woman, deeply uninterested in style & fashion, no makeup, very practical & ‘handy’, socially busy, quite fit and strong but not slim…I don’t seem to fit any ‘type’! But I’m happy the way I am, and that’s the main thing for me.

GoodGirlFaith · 17/09/2026 17:50

I do not care. I never have.

Probably because I know I am a good person.

I'm exactly the same. No idea how to stop it either. I'm kinda hoping it fades with age.
