would a primary school or nursery allow ds to do a placement

Possibly . My son did placement at primary school but his course was in early years childcare so was more relevant .
He subsequently got taken on for a job and has been there five years now - so it’s always worth asking !

A lot would yes. Definitely ask his previous primary school as he has a younger sibling attending. There is always young people boys and girls who are doing work experience in my child school.
Tell him to call into the school and send emails to other local places.
Just adding he needs to do it today as the checks take awhile and they may have already got someone.

My DD did work experience in Y10 and Y12 in two different primary schools. It is entirely possible, though I am not sure a primary school setting is completely relevant to a Health and Social Care course. What does he want to do once he has completed the course? I am presuming he would like to go on to do something health or social care related - nursing, physio, social work or along those lines? If so, he'd be better placed having work experience allied to those fields as applications to those university courses can be competitive.

I know the hospital has said they cannot accommodate him, but has he considered care homes?

Yes he should try care homes. At the end of the day it’s not about whether it’s relevant though it’s about passing the course.

Yes, I did my school work experience at a nursery school and now as a teacher, we often have teens from local schools and colleges who are doing all sorts of courses.

He’ll fall into a sector he enjoys and follow from there. Passing now is important. He has left it a little bit late applying as he needs a police check.
Care home is a good option that will be happy for the extra help.

I’m not sure working in a school setting is appropriate for that course? Schools and. Nurseries absolutely take on young people in work placements but it’s usually for early years courses. It usually takes a lot of time to get all the right paper work in place and have someone ready to be their mentor etc so if you are taking about a year long placement this probably would not be feasible compared to say a 2 week placement. There are so many practical things like he wouldn’t be able to be left a lone with the children and would have to be supervised at all times so it’s actually a lot of work for the school!

does the school not help with a list of suggested places for the placement? Does your son know anyone who has done the course who he can ask?

It would be great for him and the school to have a former pupil in for work experience. As he is over 16 he will need a DBS certificate but that is easy to sort out.

How about a local community centre ?

My DD is on an animal course where she needs 300 hours of work experience. It's about the experience in the sector and helping decide what's next. It looks good on job and uni applications.

Speak to the tutor and ask what sort of placements last years students did.

School absolutely would take him, I doubt he'd need a DBS as he would never be left unsupervised and even if he did they don't take long.

Get him to draft an email explaining who is, what he is studying and his availability for example every Monday or every Thursday and why he needs work experience to support his studies.

DD went to a few different places to see what she liked/didn't like so if college have suggested schools and nursery email all in your area and maybe do a different day each week at two. It also gets the hours built up. He could also ask for full weeks at care homes for the holidays to widen his experience and to include adults.

I don't think there's a blanket answer to this. Primary schools might take him, or they might have other people on work experience, or just not want the bother of a work experience kid. Your son needs to look at local options and approach actual places and ask. Community centres might have something with older adults, Children's Centres might be another way of getting a range of experiences with kids.

OP is he doing the Pearson BTEC Level 3? If so have you looked at the website? Primary schools aren’t listed - however children centers, SEN schools are.

i work in a school where we don’t offer this course but we offer others similar and all information would have been sent out before summer when the child signs up so they have the whole summer to contact placements. For the placement it does require quite a bit of admin on their end and they will limit how many they have any one time due to the need for supervision etc. your son needs to be talking to the course tutor/ careers coordinator etc to get all the guidance he needs.
