AIBU to leave holiday early after my mother criticised my parenting?

graygoose · 17/09/2026 01:47

Background: I’m a single mum on holiday with my parents and 2 year old, a one hour flight away from where we live (not in the UK). My relationship with my mother has deteriorated steadily in recent years, especially since I became a mum. I see how toxic her behaviour to me and my brother really was (brother is now no contact with her) but she sits there and criticises my parenting. This morning at breakfast buffet DD dropped her croissant on the floor. I picked it up and told her I’ll get her a new one, go sit with grandparents. She’s 2 so she had a mini meltdown because she wanted to carry the croissant herself. My mother tells me I shamed DD, not realising the irony in saying that statement to her own daughter!

I could go on but it’s been a lifetime of her criticising me, not taking accountability and every time I stick up for myself she compares me to her abusive older sister. I’m so over this. I’m a worse person when she’s around.

I’ve booked a flight home for me and DD this morning leaving in a few hours. Currently sitting in our adjoining hotel room waiting until it’s late enough for me to leave for the airport with DD and not hang around there too long.

I am in my late 30s and feel sick inside at the thought of “defying” my mother. But I’m also sick of her and I’m a worse person when I’m around her.

I don’t know what I’m seeking here, I’m not a dramatic person, I have never “defied” my mother before but AIBU for deciding I’m an adult with free will, mother to my own child and I can make decisions that upset my mother? She’s done a real number on me.

Bloody well done op, here's too a more peaceful life, yes you will grieve the mother she should of been, but cutting out her ewful behaviour towards you is the only thing left to do, we don't ever do this lightly op,
Well done💐

Remember or be aware she'll use the ' flying monkeys ' your dad to keep contact, just be ready, the ' thats just your mum, she doesn't mean it' this will come down the line op,

Stay strong, protect your MH and your child from an ewful woman,

A holiday isn’t an impulse thing. There is plenty of time to think about whether it is the right thing to do. At no point in the lead up did you think “wait a minute, my mum is a total nightmare, criticises me constantly and has caused me huge anxiety and distress, MAYBE I shouldn’t go away with her”?!

If you haven't spent your formative years and into adulthood being the victim of emotional abuse at the hands of your own mother, it's probably too complicated to explain.

FFS read OP's post!

I know. There are some very dense people on here.

Why would her daughter do the same in 30 years, the OP isn't the one being abusive it's the grandparent

Exactly

Lots of people here haven’t been raised by narcissists, love that for you all.

Oh I absolutely was. Awful man.

And I'd argue that in that position you actually NEED sane people who've come out the other side who can say to you... "why the fuck are you still doing xyz with/for them? Stop it!'

OP, you sound calm and measured and I applaud you not wanting your child around such toxicity.

Your father is a weak selfish man who stood back and allowed two children to be abused.
I really wouldn't want him around my child.

You have had s very tough time of it and what your mother said regarding your Ex is unforgivable.

I really hope you take it slow with this relationship and do not rush to move him in.

You have had huge abuse in your life and unfortunately when that is the case you can be susceptible to someone just a bit different feeling better than it is.

The www.freedomprogramme.co.uk is a good start to establish great boundaries around you.

You both really deserve to be cherished.

Thank you. Don’t worry, I’m never living with a man again!

As to why I went on holiday with my mother: as other posters have recognised, this is 38 years of me attempting a positive relationship with her. A fawn response to win affection and praise from my mother, and an attempt to prove to myself that I have a “normal” family. I know I don’t, but the denial has been strong for a long time because I’ve tried so hard.

So the truth is, this is an entire lifetime of me trying to appease my mother and make her happy and proud. I hope that puts croissant gate (lol) and the reason I even went on holiday in more context. And those who dint understand at all: I envy you, seriously. Cherish your mums.

I appreciate you taking the time to put this in words.

Hopefully it will help you, too.

I am glad you have your brother still so are not without family.

Your mother sounds unhinged.

I hope you are able to keep very low (or no?) contact with your mother and create a safe and happy world for you and your little one. Flowers

I think you are wrong about the 1980s being spare the rod, spoil the child. My children were small then and it was definitely not the case. I only mention this because it can read as though you're making an excuse for your mother - 'it wasn't her fault as it was the way things were then'.

Nope.

I was an adult in the 80s too and completely agree with @Rightsraptor .

Your mother is seemingly excusing her behaviour, but this is not how most of society was.

A 2 year old would likely stuff the croissant back in her mouth, where would she have carried it to?

OP says "it’s been a lifetime of her criticising me, not taking accountability and every time I stick up for myself she compares me to her abusive older sister." so it's weird you ally with the mum.

I think what people are thinking though is that if that is an example of criticism then "a lifetime of criticism" then it may be a bit of an exaggeration.

I mean I've known people for whom saying, "could you pop that in the drawer when you've finished" creates an avalanche of: "of course I was going to put it in the drawer, how dare you imply that I wasn't going to do that. I'm the tidiest person in the place and always put everything away and I'm so put upon because I do all the tidying in this place. You're always criticising me!"

As others have said, this may be the last straw comment, which often isn't that bad on the face of it, but we can't know for certain.

Some people put up with criticism far too long, when they should be standing up for themselves earlier, before they explode over what seems like a minor point.

Some people overreact to every comment and people around them feel they're treading on eggshells waiting for the next explosion.

We can't know which it is from OP's account because she's bound to consider herself the former version.

You don’t have to split if you don’t want / can’t. Just don’t go on holiday?! OP has not said once that she was under any pressure to go on this holiday. She thought it would bring them closer. And I’m saying it very obviously wouldn’t as holidays are intense, especially with a 2 year old.

I'm guessing you're not the most naturally empathetic person so perhaps it's difficult for you to put yourself in their shoes. I think OP has done a pretty good job of explaining themselves.

You think you would have done differently, well, that's nice, good for you. But no need to keep harping on about how easy it would be to take different actions.

SALaw · 18/09/2026 16:15

QuietComet · 18/09/2026 09:59

It's NOT easy to undo / split from 30-odd years of ingrained behaviours and habits, and the relationships involved. Stop trying to be so facile about it.

momager22 · 18/09/2026 14:29

Just wanted to show some support op. You’ve been very brave setting your boundaries.
In future I would keep any contact with her factual and emotionless. Don’t fawn and don’t pander. Let her threaten and shriek and show her true colours.
I hope you can also find the strength to tell your father how much his passiveness has damaged you.

Right, but it's OTT (in my opinion) to choose to holiday with someone who has been criticising you your whole life then fly home after a few hours because of a pretty innocuous comment.

Jesus, I'm sure that was the tiny straw that broke the huge camel's back!

graygoose · 18/09/2026 06:15

Thank you, my mother told me this was the case and she also used to hit me (I’m a bit younger than my brother so it was the 90s by this time). I always thought it was super normal and yes, I have been making excuses for her. Thanks for your insight.

Me and my sister were born in the late 70s/early 80s, and our parents were more strict than our most of our friends' parents, but they never hit us.

I think you've done exactly the right thing, and your parents deserve to lose you and your DD.

I actually think the fact it is so small is hyper relevant. OPs mum is using any opportunity to put her down and make comments. Even something so small results in a dig at her parenting. It becomes death by a thousand cuts

Ohnobackagain · 18/09/2026 10:26

Just wanted to say @graygoose I have now read your other posts (doh - usually read them all first) but even without hearing the further background, I could tell that there was no future in attempting a relationship with your Mum. I hope you’re ok.

Ohnobackagain · 18/09/2026 10:20

Blimey @graygoose I started reading thinking your Mum was going to say you were too lax or something and instead she’s accusing you of shaming your child? I don’t think you are being unreasonable. Sometimes you just get to a point where you see things as they are and you have to walk away. You are recognising an irreconcilable difference and you know you won’t agree on this and she probably won’t be able to rein in her words, so no point wasting time.

SandyHappyPerson · 18/09/2026 10:01

graygoose · 18/09/2026 02:18

I definitely get the sentiment and it’s the kind of thing I would say to someone else myself. But I hope you see from my posts above why a relationship of equals is literally impossible here. I have tried since I became a legal adult and 20 years later it’s probably become worse.

I consider myself a very accountable person, if there is any way I can blame myself I find it. But this also means I’m self aware (or try to be) and listen to other sides of the story and even criticisms of me. I’m a lawyer so critical thinking is a big component of my job. As I’ve matured I have found my mother’s irrationality increasingly frustrating and impossible to reconcile. And trust me, I have tried. But unless you agree completely with her, do not criticise her or hold it accountable and enable every thought and behaviour she has, she will blow up. To me that’s not a rational basis to establish a relationship of equals, because however much I may want that, she clearly does not.

I also would have considered staying and just enjoying it with DD, but you know what, you would never have enjoyed the rest of the holiday and DD is far too young to remember anyway.

You absolutely did the right thing by leaving, and if it was the catalyst to re-asses your whole relationship with your mum, and realise you needed to stop trying, than it was absolutely worth the bad experience.

I wish you luck OP, making the break is so hard when you have been conditioned from a young age, but you will soon realise the best thing you ever did was go on that holiday with them and then leave.
