To think people should not use 'we put pets to sleep' as an argument to allow assisted dying?

We do it to animals and not humans because, despite what the histrionics say, society is built on the idea of human exceptionalism and the (pretty flimsy, actually, when you look into it) notion that humans are inherently and objectively superior to other animals. The phrase ‘I was treated like an animal’ would have no rhetorical value if it wasn’t broadly true that it’s considered OK to harm animals in a way that would be considered unacceptable if done to humans. It’s not because society ‘treats animals better than humans’. It’s the opposite - an animal life is considered of less value and so the stakes of ‘taking’ that life are much lower. It’s why animalisation is such a useful rhetorical device for anyone wanting to subordinate a different group of humans. Anyone genuinely invested in this subject would benefit from reading ‘Beasts of Burden’ by Sunaura Taylor. She gives a very intelligent and balanced insight from the point of view of a disabled person.

No, but it does depend on the individual. I have a family member who's in his mid-90s. He's completely chair bound. He lives at home, with a couple of visits a day from people who can move him from bed to chair and back, and deal with washing and toileting. His hearing isn't great. But he spends all day every day reading. And he seems perfectly content. He's always been a glass half full kind of person.

That's exactly what I am on about. People aged 75-80+ languishing in care homes, with zero quality of life, spending 90% of their life in bed or in a high-seat orthopaedic chair, being hand washed by carers, being paraded on Facebook like puppets, often doubly incontinent, can't do a 12 piece jigsaw puzzle, whacking blobs of paint on a piece of paper (and having it presented as Edna's wonderful painting,') don't know what day of the week it is half the time, don't recognise anyone, and keep asking for a relative who died in 1983.

But not wanting this awful, barely-existing 'life' and to think it's wrong that people are kept alive for a decade or more longer than they should be (by drugs) whilst having zero quality of life is wanting to 'bump off granny.' 😂
