I fell and fractured my ankle a week ago. I was told it’s a stable fracture to be treated like a sprain. I also really tore up my knee, which has been very slow to heal.

A week on and I’m still incredibly swollen, bruised and my ankle is becoming more and more painful. My knee is still very sore, the actual skin is numb but I have pain at the base and top of my kneecap. It also feels a little unstable and I am getting sharp stabbing pains to one side of my kneecap.

My GP isn’t interested. They say that I have to go to physio if I need, as it’s a muscular injury.

Physio has an eight week minimum wait for a video consultation.

This obviously isn’t an A&e situation (shamefully I did go to A&E for the initial injury because it had a very short wait time, it seemed to be a quiet time of day!), and they wouldn’t take a look at my knee anyway as it’s a “superficial injury”.

Minor injuries is now by appointment only in my area and appointments are gone within a minute of opening.

I’ve tried the pharmacy for the graze that isn’t healing but they just say to dress it and keep it clean and it’ll heal “eventually”.

I feel like I’m being turned away at every turn but I’m in so much pain, I’m left feeling sick by lunchtime because my ankle is that sore, and by the end of the day I can’t stand walking around. I have basic physio exercises from my last sprain years ago but I can’t do them, but I can’t be seen by anyone.

Please don’t suggest a private physio assessment, it’s not within my budget at all. AIBU to just feel despondent and like I can’t get help anywhere?

@ihowlforyou if your work is entirely desk based can you WFH to limit your walking on it, at least for now? Speak to occupational health. But as you're making yourself worse I suspect their advice will be that you shouldn't be working.

I waited for a fracture clinic call but none came!

I do find it weird that this time, my radiology report isn’t available on the nhs app. It feels like the nurse was almost angry that I had a fracture

(name changed from the last thread because I got some serious grief on there and I’m not in a place to deal with that at all)

I remember your post on the day you did it. You had some great advice from an A&E nurse on here as to why a boot and fracture clinic appointment weren’t the usual way forward for a avulsion fracture.
Did you hear back from PALS?
Contact PALS again and they may be able to help you get some support for the associated injury on you knee.

ChapmanFarm · 17/09/2026 08:06

I'd phone the fracture clinic as suggested.

Otherwise, as you are not sleeping anyway and work in a hospital, I'd go to A&E at 5am tomorrow.

Knees are tricky for healing because you can't not bend it and so it keeps reopening. Is it just leaking fluid or something thicker? A pharmacist would recognise signs of infection.

If you are unsure draw a line around it to make sure the redness isn't expanding.

Be clearer in your wording about why you are seeking help. It is getting more swollen and painful and you have internal knee pain which is also getting worse. Weight bearing is getting more difficult (assuming this is the case).

I think your general state of upset about the fall and the cut is a distraction. Try and be calm and clear.

It will take time to heal but if it is genuinely getting worse day on day it should be reviewed.

Kelticgold · 17/09/2026 08:06

Oh dear, oh dear. You are going to give yourself an ulcer after taking ibuprofen for so long.
Why do you care so much about your team when they care so little about you? Your manager should have referred you to occupational health, and together they should support you to WFH.

Evaka · 17/09/2026 08:04

OP, you're being incredibly negative and not helping yourself. Why on earth aren't you taking on some of the kind and expert advice you're getting here? Why bother posting if you're going to tell scores of sensible people they're wrong?

Sounds like you're having a shit time but being a complete passenger and a martyr is making it 100 times worse.

Iamnotalemming · 17/09/2026 08:03

Kindly, you seem to be in a doom spiral. You need to get more medical attention even if it makes you feel like a nuisance or embarrassed. Our health service is in a terrible state and it is sadly very common to get poor treatment these days.

As others have said, you need to speak to a nurse about the knee and the ankle (and explain how many painkillers you are taking). Then ring the fracture clinic and ask for advice.

ihowlforyou · 16/09/2026 22:57

I genuinely do not know how many more times I can say it. I cannot call in sick. My managers would not accept it. I would likely face a disciplinary.

You won’t have a disciplinary for going off sick unless you are already on sickness monitoring.

Go back to a&e, tell them the pain is worse, probably because it’s not in a boot and you are walking so far on an injured ankle.
If you don’t look after yourself now no one else will.

Increasing pain that is disturbing your sleep needs addressing and you need to be putting yourself first OP. It is not your problem that the team you work in is short staffed. They will have to get agency cover if it’s that bad.

MuchAdoAbout · 17/09/2026 08:02

You need to go and get your ankle checked, be firm and if you feel you need to, go to a different hospital, but you shouldn’t be worried about upsetting healthcare staff by saying you’re in pain and need it checked. They are falibale.

On the knee, when a deep graze heals it can produce a whitish sometimes substance that is part of the healing. Cleaning that away will delay the healing. It should not smell.

I’m cleaning the knee morning and night, trying to let it dry but it just won’t. It’s just pumping out crap and it’s disgusting, but the pharmacy say that’s all I can do. I don’t want a nurse call when I’ve already been chastised for seeking healthcare, I feel so rubbish that being told off again like I’m a child would be disastrous

I feel so rubbish that being told off again like I’m a child would be disastrous
But you are acting like a petulant child, ignoring all the advice here (and from the previous thread) and insisting that what you are doing is all you possibly could do. I don't know what you think disaster is going to look like, and as you speak about yourself as if you're not just invincible in life, but irreplaceable at work, I fear that if you continue behaving so childishly, that you are in for a big disappointment when you hit middle age and find walking difficult! What advice is your own mother giving you? Are you listening to her at least?

watermybegonias · 17/09/2026 07:53

You did get a pile on last thread, which was very harsh. People thought you were making a fuss and shouldn’t have gone to hospital. I think you were right to go, although were let down by the nurse’s attitude.

Now you are struggling and have come on asking what to do - brave after last time! But whether you think the people responding are kind or mean, the fact remains there are only 2 options - you seek help, or you don’t. There is no option 3, no magic wand.

How is doing nothing working out for you? Abysmal.

How is going to work turning out for you? Abysmal.

You don’t have to be Einstein to see what you have to do.

LBFseBrom · 17/09/2026 07:53

It will take a bit longer for you to feel better. Another week and there will be some improvement, three weeks - a lot.

Look after yourself, don't overdo it.

There isn't anything a doctor can do at the moment.

Zigazigaaaaaah · 17/09/2026 07:51

Agreee with everyone else plus concerned that you’re having ibuprofen 4hrly as should be 6hrly - so you’re having too much. It’s also only max 3 times a day ! please don’t eff up your kidneys too

Blushingm · 17/09/2026 07:50

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · 17/09/2026 07:48

Refusing a nurse call for an infected wound and broken bone is ridiculous. You're being a martyr.

A nurse wouldnt call as she’s not housebound anyway - she would need to attend clinic

Notafanofheat · 17/09/2026 07:49

OP - has your knee been assessed at all for the instability? If not you need to go back to A&E and get them to reassess the whole leg - both the ankle which clearly needs rest and support, the knee wound and knee itself cause what you describe sounds like torn ligaments that noone has looked at - that definitely needs rest after initial injury.
5000 steps is not resting your ankle. It doesn’t matter that your team is understaffed, frankly - that’s above your paygrade. You cannot be put on disciplinary for a legitimate illness - but just in case, join your union before you ask to be signed off. This is not going to get better by being ignored, if you get anyone but a grumpy nurse assessing you, you will be told to stop walking that much too. The long you keep doing what you’re doing, the longer you will then be off to heal properly. The nurse will not remember you, no one will care that you’re questioning poor advice bar the fact you have legitimate cause to complain (and you should). And if by some miracle your case makes it round the hospital gossip mill and people treat you worse for it -you need a new job.

DearlyDiego · 17/09/2026 07:48

Why have you started another thread if all you're going to do is ignore all the good advice, yet again.

Your options are

  1. Go back to A&E
  2. Take time off work to heal

If you're unwilling to do either of those, then suffer in silence. You're acting like a child, frankly.

I absolutely can when I’ve been in work for a week.

Not if your GP signs you off??

Needmorelego · 17/09/2026 07:46

FFS stop posting on here and just go to A+E.

Chanberry · 17/09/2026 07:42

If they can't cope without you for a day, they certainly won't be able to cope if they sack you!

You really need to stop giving them so much power. You're letting them guilt trip you into possible lifelong health problems by not letting your body heal when it needs to. Do you seriously want to risk having walking issues for life, not to mention pain? They don't care about that, so you need to.

If you'd rather be stubborn and keep playing the martyr, then go for it.

You shouldn’t be ‘cleaning it morning and night’. It won’t dry if you do this. You’ll be irritating the wound.

Clean it
Dress it
leave the dressing on

Blushingm · 17/09/2026 07:36

ihowlforyou · 16/09/2026 22:05

I’ve been told I can! I’ve cut my activity down to the bare minimum but my everyday commute and life totals about 5000 steps.

5000 steps is why it will be hurting and still swollen! That’s not bare minimum

TheDreamyFinch · 17/09/2026 07:35

I work in a similar sector and there is no way on earth you could face a disciplinary for going to seek further help for a broken ankle. You must have a HR department.

jessycake · 17/09/2026 07:29

I had a nasty sprain and it took 8 weeks to heal , I was really depressed at one point thinking I could never get some of my shoes on and it was never going to get better and I was only comfortable in crocs.

ihowlforyou · 17/09/2026 06:58

The packet says every four hours.

Every packet I've had says every 6 hours and no more than 4 in 24 hours.

Comeinsideforacupoftea · 17/09/2026 07:26

OP I think you need to problem solve a bit. You were told you can walk but 5000 steps a day is a little bit bonkers more than just a bit of a walk on such an injured leg so if you're in severe pain you need to heavily cut down on this and keep the leg rested and elevated at other times. Listen to your body and find another way of getting to work.

Although you weren't given a fracture boot I'd wear a good supportive pair of boots eg Timberlands for a while

Did the doctors give you any gentle exercises to do? If not google foot and ankle exercises and start doing these as best you can

If you genuinely feel that your pain and swelling is more than it should be then I'd say what you need next is fracture clinic. Your best hope of a referral to them is going back to A and E. They aren't going to be able to heal a fractured ankle overnight though. To some degree you need to just accept that you're going to be a bit out of action for a few weeks and take it easy. At the moment it sounds like the biggest problem is that there's a huge difference between your expectations and the reality of how a broken ankle heals.
