AIBU to be surprised by a charity fundraiser knocking at 7.30pm?

My door bell just rang and I didn’t really want to open it. It’s 7:30pm and fairly dark outside already but I thought it could be my husband so I opened it. It was a charity fundraiser asking if I have time for a chat. I said no
sorry I’m just about to put my kids to bed (lie) closed the door. He was polite and left. I haven’t had anyone knocking on door at night for charity donation ever. Is it common?

I once had a woman knock eraky evening.
She gave me this long diatribe about changing energy suppliers and wanted me to set up a direct debit
Then got arsey because I said I need to discuss it with my husband before I did committed to a dd.
She shouted at me ' wouldn't your husband want you save money '.
I said that yes he would and I don't know what goes on in her family but in mine we discuss things before swapping dd's

This annoys me as my mum was very gullible(she has dementia now) and siesta signed up. She would say ‘he said he could save me £180 year?’ I’d ask ‘did he compare your tariff and standing charge?…then how can he know his tariff is cheaper?’ Question them next time it’s quite telling that they are talking shite.

She said she was being "harassed". If she just says no thanks politely, problem solved.

Fortunately, we live on an unlit lane nearly half a mile from the nearest house and nearly three miles from the nearest village, so we don't get cold callers.

Over the last few years I have been approached by two chuggers in our nearest town (which is popular with tourists). They are a pain in the arse and I give them a wide berth when I see them now.

The first one followed me down the street aggressively asking "So you don't care about sick children, then?" when I told him I wasn't interested.

The second one asked for "a minute of my time" so she could tell me a bit about her charity. I told her she could, but I no intention of signing a direct debit for anything nor would I be making a commitment to make ongoing donations, however worthy the cause.

She assured me that she understood and I was under no obligation. She spent a few minutes telling me about the (very well-known) charity and asked me to sign up for a direct debit. I reminded her that I'd already told her I wasn't going to do that and offered to make a one-off donation there and then instead.

Her friendly and cooperative approach suddenly changed. She refused my offer and aggressively accused me of "wasting her time". She continued to shout at me as I walked away.

She probably does just say no thanks politely…
I don't think I get your point.

My point is that having a 3 second interaction when you say no thank you and closing the door is hardly being "harassed".

Why would your husband be ringing the doorbell?

Confused

Maybe he’d forgotten his key?
I think neighbours coming round or deliveries is entirely different.
Charity callers no thanks

I don't get why people get annoyed about what a CEO in a charity gets paid.

The charity wants the best person to run the charity in the most efficient way and raise as much money as it can.

To get the best highly skilled person for the job, they need to match the CEO salary of similar non-charity jobs to make it worthwhile for the person doing the job. Not many people are willing to work for less salary than they can get elsewhere just because it's a charity. The phrase if you pay peanuts, you attract monkeys springs is apt. It's not wasting money. It's investing in the best person to do the job.

I don't object to the salary of a charity CEO if it's comparable to industry as everyone deserves to be paid the industry going rate for their job.

I agree chuggers on commission should be stopped as it's irritating being knocked on at home or stopped in the street etc.

I object on the basis that there are too many charities. Now if its a charity to specifically manage a local field or event or location specific thing fair enough.

But we have over 30,000 cancer charities. If only 1% pay a ceo thats 300 people doing the same job

Fizbosshoes · 17/09/2026 09:32

Im always surprised at the number of chuggers outside the station I commute to. (Its not a particularly touristy area of London so i imagine the vast majority of people are on the way to and from work) Every day there is about a dozen from one charity or another ,with varying techniques of approaching people. I barely see anyone engage or interact with them or sign up, people are either in a hurry to get to work or in a hurry to catch their train. I feel sorry for them, it must be pretty demoralising to be ignored or told no thanks all day long.
The annoying thing is that they usually start by saying they want a minute of my time. When of course they are mainly after my bank details. If I gave them a minute of my time but told them what I thought about Andy Burnham/Man utds latest result/the weather/my chances of getting oasis tickets etc, that wouldnt fulfil their brief!

Flyingdolphins · 17/09/2026 09:13

Just because it's common doesn't mean it's not bloody annoying! We get them a lot around here and it's always 5.30-7.30 when I'm either feeding, bathing or trying to get the kids to sleep.

I ignore them but the doorbell sets the dog off anyway and the damage is done.

Has anyone actually signed up to a donation with these people? I can't imagine who would apart from elderly/vulnerable but it must work or they wouldn't do it.

NotAnotherScarf · 16/09/2026 22:30

Yep it's happened, just ask them how much they have got paid and how much the CEO of the charity has been paid and point out that both are wasted money that could be used for what the charity actually stands for and shut the door

I'm sure that's what she does do. You can still find it annoying and invasive though.

mondaytosunday · 17/09/2026 08:38

Of course - you are more likely to be home at that hour.

plumming · 17/09/2026 08:30

I don’t understand how it’s worth it to them, surely hardly anyone actually signs up and gives their bank details on their doorstep or on the street as they sometimes are? I miss the days of throwing coins in a charity bucket!

Timeforachange26 · 16/09/2026 22:12

Everyday?

So what's getting up at 9.30am got to do with the thread?

Edited

I think @ExistWHY is making a (rather poor) attempt at humour.

Lurkingandlearning · 17/09/2026 08:24

I get the impression these guys are paid on results. So if they haven’t signed enough people up they need to keep trying.

To me, charities supporting that way of scrapping a living puts them in a bad light. As does expecting people to hand over their bank details on the doorstep.

AlwaysExtraHot · 17/09/2026 08:23

AntiHop · 17/09/2026 08:20

Just quickly say no thanks politely. Is that so difficult?

I find all unsolicited door knockers annoying regardless of time of day. It’s so invasive. I don’t want to be harassed in my own home or on my own door step.

We had a hello fresh guy knock half 7 the other night just was bedtime meltdowns began. I get why they come at that time but they can all fuck off, it shouldn't be allowed imo. It's predatory and invasive.

You are in charge of whether you answer your door or not.

AlwaysExtraHot · 17/09/2026 08:09

Deliveries and neighbours are different, I think. I would stick to ‘business hours’ if I were a charity, and weekend daytimes.

Just don't answer the door

ElefantAndCastle · 17/09/2026 04:04

We wouldn't open. No thank you.

garlictwist · 17/09/2026 03:25

itvseems like a good time to me. Any earlier and people will be out at work and later going to bed.
