To wonder if Jesus Christ is swearing

It was inappropriate. I am a Catholic and I have been guilty of using it in frustration, though it is always Jaysus not Jesus. It’s learned behaviour, my mother said ah jaysus too. Never on the school grounds.

Yes, it probably is aimed at you and yes it is swearing , highly inappropriate and offensive to many people, just as bad as saying fuck in front of children.

It's offensive. I'm big enough and old enough to just ignore it if I hear it but as someone from a deeply religious upbringing it makes me uncomfortable. I can't really think of an equivalent that lifelong atheists can identify with. I suppose it was up there with the f word and the c word during my childhood and saying it at a school in public would be very controversial.

It's not a competition, though. Whether or not blasphemy is included in 'swearing' as such, both are indeed very offensive to many people, whether equally and/or to the same people or not. Whether you care about potentially offending people is up to you.

Try going for a job interview in a formal place and using 'bog standard' swear-words in front of the interviewer - and then see if it influences whether or not they offer the job. I think most people would probably decide not to risk it in the first place, unless they didn't actually want the job.

It's not right to take the name of the Lord in vain. You wouldn't like it if people said your name as an expression of frustration and anger when they were upset, so why take someone else's name and do the same thing?

I don't think the man who lived, called Jesus of Nazareth would have minded OP saying what she said. He would have forgiven her so anything more is just people being judgey.

I know. In my experience, the most devout tend to be the least Christian in the true sense of ye word.

There’s always someone who’s going to be offended. Having endured catholic schooling and upbringing, I can’t get terribly excited about believers taking offence at a term that is culturally normalised.

Ive thought about this post and I don’t think it’s very Christian. You can’t turn the other cheek and think less of the person.

Because if you are Christian you would still regard them as a child of God and of exactly the same worth - exactly as loved by God - as everyone else.

We don't say anything in our household, and we really get onto my kids when I hear them say "OMG". When I hear someone else say anything like that it really affects me in a way which regular swearing does not... unless you're around my kids, in which case I'll be pretty mad, ha!

Fair enough, but my original point was addressed to people who are claiming that they can't understand that it might really be offensive to many. If people aren't bothered about potentially offending others, that's their look-out and a different matter.

As PP said context is everything. I once said similar in a church foyer and there was a bit of a silence. However when it became clear that it because one of the, frankly, vicious metal tables I was helping to fold and stack had snapped closed on my hand it was generally agreed my outburst was pretty mild.

Anyway God will forgive you… or strike you down… depending on which bit of the bible you look at… so see how the next week goes. If there were to be a god they would probably be more forgiving than his human fans seem to be.

That’s not what I said. I said if I shouted it out, I would only be doing it to be offensive or to make some sort of point as it would not be part of my vernacular. However, as the likes of Jesus Christ, Christ on a bike, oh my god etc are all culturally normalised as exclamations of shock, surprise, annoyance they would come out naturally in those circumstances. I would not be making a deliberate attempt to be offensive or make some sort of point as those phrases are culturally appropriate exclamations.

You could saying it and claim any of the following:
Undiagnosed Tourette’s
Jesus Christ being child’s Nick nane
having a friend called Jesus Christ who was across the street that you were calling

Other good ones are: Jesus wept! God give me strength!

or in future just give the little fekkin blighter a wee slap and that will get them talking.

In all honesty though there are very few rational people who believe in a god or would find that offensive. There are a small minority of imaginary sky fairy believers but since the idea of that is irrational too their views may not be relevant.

Anyone can be offended by anything at any time and that is on them not you. you are not inciting hatred or violence so crack on I guess.

Our late priest was always saying Jesus Christ. Jeeesus Christ he would go. Several times during every Mass. Sounded like he was taking the utter piss to be honest.

“War and hate are bad words. Fuck isn’t” is something I read in a book many moons ago that has stuck with me. I couldn’t get het up about a JC of a morning school run. Even the man himself would have had his patience tried by whiny children and might have been prone to the odd sweary morning.

Don't worry about it. I personally hate to hear children swearing and don’t like coarse words around children but we are human and those like buggers would try the patience of a saint.

I'll often say oh Jesus when i've had a shock or i'm scared, but that's not considered swearing bc it's not being said in a provocative or offensive way.

Yes, yelling JC when you're angry, frustrated or loosing your shit is offensive. You're using it as you would a swear word, so it is swearing. It also has an extra level of being offensive to christians. It's not the worst thing you could have said, but people were probably more shocked at you shouting, it makes it look a bit like you lost control - not a good look at the school gates (but not the end of the world either).

Try saying something like 'Heavens to Betsy' or 'well i'll be jiggered' next time. Swearing can be fun and child friendly.

Many people were brought up hearing it (so it’s ingrained) and not knowing it was blasphemy for years and years. I didn’t know it was problematic until I had left uni. So I think I would reserve judgement.

I don’t understand why you say “ of course you wouldn’t shout out the name of the Muslim prophet “ because it’s offensive - but think it’s ok to use the name of our Lord in that way. It’s not logical . Both are holy names. The fact that it’s “ culturally normalised” does not mean that it’s not offensive to believers .

There's also lots of people who find it offensive to hear bog standard swearing. Whether you find it offensive due to believing in blasphemy or just find swearing offensive full stop is neither here nor there. Your offense doesn't have more weight due to your religious beliefs

Still offensive to many people. The thing is that we turn the other cheek, and don't mention it. We notice it though, and think the less of you.
