To wonder if Jesus Christ is swearing

Dd1 has once involved a mother f king cabbage when he was on a bicycle, that was a new permutation, I’m yet to see if it catches on.

I don't use it but till this thread I had no idea it was offensive (but English is not my first language and my family aren't Christians). Very grateful to have learnt this today before I inadvertently offend someone.

What about oh my god? Is that considered blasphemous or offensive? Or "good lord"?

Both DH and me swear once in a while and DD always told us off for it so we tried to cut it down. I think we have pretty badly failed at that though as recently DD said "what the fuck" when missing the ball in a game. She was as surprised as the rest of us.. strictly no more swearing for DH and me!!

I try to say biscuits like in bluey eg for biscuiting biscuit's sake. It's surprisingly satisfying. 😶

The example you’re giving though of OMFG is just ‘god’ which as far as I’m aware, most religions believe in some form of. The word ‘god’ is not just for Christianity.

I’m atheist now but a few years back I complained to MN about people saying OMFG but in full, not spelled out, and pointed out they wouldn’t allow a similar expression using other non-Christian religious figures.

They absolutely refused to see any issue and said they didn’t do censorship for blasphemy. I don’t think they understood that some people actually do have sincere Christian faith.

On the thread I started, nobody much really cared about the Christian version but said it would be terrible to use any other religious variant. 🤷

Would call your child Shitty, Shit or Shit-Head? Hopefully not because of the meaning of those words. Then taking someone else's name and giving it the same meaning as those words is not ok either.

Probably best to teach the kids not to use the name of anyone's god or other venerated and sacred religious leader as an expression of contempt, rage etc., whatever their own beliefs or yours. You wouldn't tell them it's ok to insult Mohammed or whatever. You don't have to respect other people's religions, but you should avoid openly insulting / mocking them.

I'm pretty sure it's quite common in other cultures, with a caveat that, thanks to Christianity, many ancient gods names were re-defined to mean "evil". Such as Perkele in Finland, for example.

The name is very precious to (devout) Christians. Imagine if you started hearing people randomly shouting "Patricia Thompson!" (if that were your DM's name) every time they were shocked, surprised or angry... would you genuinely not find that at least a little bit unpleasant and unnerving; especially if they mixed in a few swear words for good measure as well, or even just added 'on a bike' or similar?

Well my dad's name is Gordon Bennett and he thinks it's fucking hilarious.

I do sometimes drop the f bomb in front of my kids but would never say Jesus as a swear. We live in a very religious community and our friends and neighbours and relatives would be extremely offended. I am very uncomfortable hearing it even though I’m not a Christian and I would be really cross if my kids said it.

As far as your error I would just make a mental note to try not to do it again. You are undoubtedly a good person and probably wouldn’t want to upset anyone.

Absolutely. In our house it’s racist slurs that are absolutely not to be tolerated - or any kind of discriminatory slur.

It was Jesus, Mary and holy St Joseph in our house. That was more for something surprising or if you got a fright though. If you were in trouble, it was just Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

I’d much rather my kid said fuck than used a racist slur or called someone a slag tbh.
