To wonder if Jesus Christ is swearing

Because I exclaimed OH JESUS CHRIST in frustration today on the school run. Not my finest moment and I will admit that; it had not been a good morning, lots of stress here and my younger child nearly tipped me over the edge demanding to be carried and blocking everyone’s way on the very narrow pavement, picked her up, dropped everything else I was carrying and said the above.

We have had a message about bad language in front of the children and I feel like it’s aimed at me.

wondering what MNetters think?

I'm guessing that it's common for people with a nominal/cultural background in those religions, but not actually amongst the people who have a strong faith. It would be like a committed vegan telling everybody how much they love eating meat.

No, it’s common generally. Plenty of devout catholics in my family who had/have no problem using Jesus Christ etc. Jesus, Mary and Joseph is particularly popular with mothers of a certain age.

I’ve noticed this title multiple times and only now realized it was about saying the phrase “Jesus Christ”. I originally interpreted it as a meditation on if there could possibly be a Jesus Christ figure observing the world and swearing in response to current events.

What makes contemporary pagan religions - such as Modern Druidry, Wicca, modern Celtic Paganism, modern Hellenic Paganism, modern Kemetic Paganism, etc - offensive to you? What is it about these particular religions that you find offensive?

So god implanted his son inside a virgin without prior discussion and her hubbie went ah thats grand like lets go find a barn and have the wee thing sure we might get some nice gifts out of it. I mean the whole bible baffles me.

Not at all - just that they were telling the truth as they (and committed Christians still nowadays) believed it to be.

I wasn't the one who said it was somehow misogynistic.

I really hate it. I find it offensive. It's blasphemy. I never fail to notice it, whereas I might well not notice a swear word appropriately used. I'm pleased to see that many people on this thread agree with me.

Religion is offensive to me.

It is pretty standard statement of anything here in Ireland. Jesus Mary and the carpenter being another. It is blasphemy technically although that was only a criminal offence here till 2020!

It isn’t swearing but it is considered impolite culturally in the UK. It is also disrespectful to those who are Christian.

You're not really making sense. I wouldn't call my child a swear word, but if someone kept invoking LIKELY SUSPECT when they banged their knee or dropped a glass how would it bother me? Incidentally, I worked with someone whose name was Shiti and pronounced Shitty.

I agree. It's really common in Ireland for people raised as Catholics.

I'm amazed school sent that out... Are you in the UK? F'ng & J:effing maybe but that seems a ridiculous overraction..
Less than 50% declare themselves christian in England and even amongst that proportion there will be a range of uptightness about it especially as less than 10% actually go to church...

As a pp said up thread I would have asked if you needed a hand and the jchrist wouldn't even have registered..

Would call your child Shitty, Shit or Shit-Head? Hopefully not because of the meaning of those words. Then taking someone else's name and giving it the same meaning as those words is not ok either.
