To wonder if Jesus Christ is swearing

Because I exclaimed OH JESUS CHRIST in frustration today on the school run. Not my finest moment and I will admit that; it had not been a good morning, lots of stress here and my younger child nearly tipped me over the edge demanding to be carried and blocking everyone’s way on the very narrow pavement, picked her up, dropped everything else I was carrying and said the above.

We have had a message about bad language in front of the children and I feel like it’s aimed at me.

wondering what MNetters think?

I mean. I'd probably try to keep that for at home. But if it slipped out on the school run I'd just laugh and apologise. Then forget all about it

I am a Christian and hardly any of my close friends are. My husband is atheist. Everyone swears around me and it doesn't bother me but 'Jesus Christ' used in place of a swear word gives me a horrible nails down a blackboard feeling. I don't police other people's language but I did ask my husband to stop with the 'Jesus Christ' and he did. The other stuff doesn't bother me, even though I don't swear myself. I don't expect anyone to really care about my feelings on it one way or another, but I do have a very unpleasant, visceral reaction when I hear it.

I'm a Christian and it makes me feel very sad if I hear it. I think it's unnecessary and there are other words to use if you need to. I do swear sometimes mainly at other drivers.

My opinion? No it’s not. If you’d have said ‘fuck me sideways’ then I’d think you went a bit far. But ‘oh Jesus Christ’? No. It’s the milder side of mild. And if it upsets a Christian then I’m sure they’ll forgive you.

I find it offensive, so I gave someone the evils today when he exclaimed “Jesus Christ!” He looked at me sheepishly and said, “…Superstar..?” 😅

And to add - there's a time and a place for everything. Tea at the Palace - probably best to hold back on 'these are the best fucking scones I've ever tasted'. Coffee with the Vicar's wife? - probably best not to exclaim 'Christ on a bike this is shit coffee' Grin

What we ordinarily call swearing today is vulgarity. I don’t know that this is correct, just what I was always taught/had understood.

I do think that is somewhat pedantic. I think most people would accept that 'swearing' means, as you put it, 'vulgarity'. I just call it swearing and it offends me not. If blasphemy offended me - which it doesn't - I would keep that to myself in much the same way as I keep my religious beliefs or lack thereof to myself.
I am older than you by some stretch so I don't think it's an age thing.

Kind of ironic that the church school considers "Jesus Christ" to be bad language but ok...
It's done now and, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't really matter. Just shout out random things next time. "Oh, son of a biscuit" or something.

I absolutely detest passive aggressive complainers.

People who won’t say things to your face but make a song and dance and have a generic whinge to the world at large, can get to fuck as far as I’m concerned.

Try saying “Jesus, Mary and Joseph” next time. I’m sure that will help. 😂

P.S. DS went to a Catholic school and you should have heard the language from some of the parents, but then I live in Ireland and we don’t really give a feck.

It's offensive to some people, and some people feel it's religious discrimination, or sometimes racism, to use religious names/terms, though a lot don't mind. Like the b and c word, some people feel they're misogynistic, so I don't say them even though a lot of people think they're just jokey swear words. But people have different opinions on what's offensive-a lot of everyday words from 50 years ago would offend people now. Someone at work got reported for saying Dick (as in talking about a man called that).

It's not swearing. It's blasphemy. Blasphemy can only be offensive to believers so you didn't swear but you did do it in a highly inappropriate setting.

Jesus wept and Joseph cried is how I correct myself when I start with Jesus Christ.
Usually in a terrible attempt of an Irish accent.
Sometimes Mary shat herself too depending on the situation.

I’m a Christian and couldn’t care less about normal swearing, but I do wince when I hear “Jesus Christ” used as a swear. I get that it’s probably better than dropping the c-bomb in front of primary aged kids but still…maybe practice “oh fiddlesticks” from now on.

I'm not religious in the slightest bit. However, I think blasphemy is really unnecessary and would actually rather people swore. Blasphemy can really offend some people and if you use it like this without thinking of others, then that says a lot about you.
