Access card for disabilities - dyslexia

Canttalkinreallife · 16/09/2026 14:56

I was talking to another mum at the school gate this morning and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

I have 3 children, the youngest (age 7) has autism, is non verbal and attends a specialist school.

My eldest is in year 6 with this mum’s child. She asked me if we had an access card for my youngest to which I answered yes, it has been really helpful on days out and such like.

She told me that she’d recently applied for one as they’re going to Disneyland Paris in October and they had been granted it for her child who has dyslexia.

I was perplexed as in my opinion dyslexia is not a disability in the same way as for people who have much more serious struggles and are unable to queue etc.

She was delighted and said they can’t wait to be able to skip all the queues.

I know her child and they are perfectly able to queue! They attend mainstream school, can talk and be reasoned with.

i think this totally abuses the whole system and in fact makes it more difficult for children like mine who will likely never be able to live an independent life.

I’m still stewing about it now and wish I’d said something. AIBU?

I suspect as ever, there's far more to this which you're unaware of

I can!

People who merrily take things meant for disabled people should be ashamed of themselves.

Would you happily go in front of someone with a disability just because you could get away with it?

I wish I had said as much to her but I was too gobsmacked to speak

It's not something I can get wound up about. It does no good. I concentrate on my own disabled child or if I think rules or a system is wrong, I fight that

Nope definitely dyslexia.

Im sure she wouldn’t have got the +1 as that was a challenge for us and we needed to send additional evidence from my son’s school to get that symbol - to prove he has a 1:1 there and will hurt himself if he gets dysregulated.

But perhaps was fine for a standard access card as Disneyland Paris accepts them all for the priority pass - they don’t need to have a plus one symbol on them.

But it’s crazy if so. This isn’t what they’re for

It won't need to have the plus one symbol because the Disney Access Pass isn't only for people who need an essential companion BUT I am also surprised that it would be sufficient for Disney to give the Access Pass that gives priority queuing when (I assume) the only symbol on the child's Access Card would be the "Visual Information" one?

Visual information

  • For people who find accessing visual information a barrier.
  • This may include people with visual impairments who require alternative formats or guidance.

I think the issue here is with Disney accepting ALL Nimbus Access Cards as eligibility proof regardless of whether the cardholder's access needs mean that queuing is a barrier to them experiencing Disneyland.

Difficulty with crowds, needing to have quick access to toilets, mobility needs - these are all solid reasons for priority access. What barrier is being removed for someone with visual processing challenges?

I am so shocked by some of the comments, especially that one about anyone who doesn't have one being a mug. Jeeez, that's the kind of person who makes places change their policies to make things more difficult for disabled people. Taking advantage of a system created to remove barriers if you have no access needs, disability etc is foul and makes the world harder for people who need the support and adjustments.

Well good for you.

It has irritated me today as she was choosing to gloat to me despite the fact my child is actually disabled.

I for one am not “delighted” to have an access card to skip queues. I would give it back in a heartbeat if it meant my child didn’t have to struggle the way he does.

Everybody "abuses" the access card system. It turns a terrible day out into a good one without the need to pay for fast passes. Anyone who doesn't have them is a mug.

This is gross and really disappointing. I work in access, disability equity and anti-ableism (not for this access card) and people like you make things so much harder for people who are Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent and have access requirements.

Shame on you.

I agree. I expect people like that would be very quick to screech about anyone they suspected of claiming disability benefits they thought they weren't entitled to.

Yes gross is the word.

Im on a Disneyland Paris forum as we went over the summer and the priority card made it possible - and there’s regularly people on there calling the UK Access Card “a hack” and encouraging people to apply from abroad etc as they’re so much easier to get than other proof.

They need to be cracked down on in my opinion.

Thank you for your work - so good to hear that there’s people who care x

And makes ableism worse, because then people don't believe those with genuine needs. Some day, those people abusing the system might have disabilities themselves, and regret how they behaved, when they're suffering and seeing others take what they need.

ginnybag · 16/09/2026 16:44

I actually can see how dyslexia can be a disability, but it will very much depend on the individual. DD has it (alongside other things) and it can be a bigger barrier than is obvious for her. She effectively cannot read black text on a white background at all, and that can include large amounts of signage.

However, the woman might be in for a shock. Just because she has applied for the card, doesn't mean she's getting it, and it isn't going to generate the can't queue symbol

moleinthehouse · 16/09/2026 16:46

I don’t believe it: it’s actually hard to get a plus one symbol on a child’s access card, they consider that children usually have parents with them. We had to argue and evidence quite hard for the plus one for our 15 year old.

If there is an ounce of truth to this then I despair. Not only does it take away from the people that actually need it, but also put regular queuers in a worse position. Recently went to a theme park and had to pay £££ for single fast tracks because in between fast track and access card it was impossible to get the kids to go on any rides. I have no issues whatsoever with a genuine access card, it’s a good way of creating some equity, but to suggest that everybody abuses the scheme - I can’t fathom how that could be true.

dancehysterical22 · 16/09/2026 15:01

Nope. Unable to queue as they have dyslexia? 😂

Unable to spell queue maybe.

You don’t need a plus one symbol for Disney - they accept any access card and any symbol

I don’t know what symbol though. Not that it matters for Disney as you don’t need symbols to get a priority pass there

God, there's always one 🙄 Its this kind of attitude that winds people up. If you and your child are capable of queuing then anything else is abusing the system.

How do you abuse the access card system when you need evidence? I struggled to get the symbols I need despite being on pip and being registered partially sighted. I know someone on enhanced care and mobility pip who couldn't get one

Does dyslexia really entitle you to one of these cards in the UK .
I know in Ireland it wouldn't .

No but apparently it entitles you to an access card - which you can then use as proof at Disney.

I’ve just looked on their website to see what it is - it’s used for loads of different purposes, just to communicate what your accessibility need may be. It doesn’t automatically entitle you to queue jumping. I also looked at Disney and you can apply for their own version of a card a month in advance, then you have to provide proof of disability at the entrance. It’s entirely possible she will be refused this at the entrance.

Apparently they are claiming to the OP that their child has an access card due to it but I really don't see how.

Ive been to Disney and if she has the UK Nimbus Access Card - which she has - you can get a priority pass which allows you to jump the queues.

Absolutely not the point of the thread but I wonder if maybe an Access card could work for us. My kids - 1 has ADHD and the other has dyspraxia so neither of them could handle the queues. Ive always just assumed that means I cant take them. But if someone else can get a card for DYSLEXIA??!! Then I really dont feel like trying would be taking the piss.

I doubt you'd get it just for dyslexia- maybe he has other problems in addition (people with dyslexia have an increased risk of having other problems as well.). Or maybe she lied to the access people. Or maybe she lied to you!
