To want to scream at my SIL

I don't know if I'm entitled to be so annoyed by this but for years now I've had to put up with my SILs exaggerating/lies/attention seeking regarding her kids and illnesses and diagnosis etc. Its like a weekly occurance on fb to get as many "OMG" comments.
For a bit of back ground info she's been with my BIL around 12 years and has 2 sons from previous relationships ( one of which is diagnosed with autism) Other no diagnosis but she as always claimed they both are.
My niece is 8 and again she has been trying to fight for a diagnosis. I do agree she has traits but I feel she is trying to force difficulties on her ( eg, having her wear ear defenders when you can actually tell she's uncomfortable with them on)

I have tried to be understanding and other family members have noticed things which are a bit odd. Her MH isn't the best but BIL is just away with the fairys and doesn't seem to think there's a big issue. Hes not on fb so hasn't seen some of the crap she posts.

Reason for the post is to get it off my chest as I don't think social media is the place. This morning she's tagged herself at a&e with her younger son saying "hoping for some answers" - ITS A ENT APPOINTMENT 🤬. She's not specified any info but seriously. Why do I seem to be the only family member annoyed by this all BIL family members are too laid back to care.

So many other stuff aswell that could mention. I feel she needs some extra help with her MH but since nobody else seems to care I guess I'll have to try or just leave it be and continue to get annoyed by her using kids for her own attention

Can’t stand people like this. Parading every hospital and GP appt on social media for attention. Most likely exaggerating it all too. Some people make it their entire personality it’s tragic.

I have family like this, accompanied by a hefty wedge of disability benefits they really don’t bloody need as well, for all the EDS, fibro, back pain shite they’ve made up and which the GP can’t disprove….

Because you clearly don’t like her 🤷‍♀️

Surely you can ignore her and find something to be annoyed about that actually affects you?

Exactly. Don't read her Facebook. Simple.

Bloody hell! The school took a restraining order out on a parent?

She repeatedly went onto school grounds when she was banned (used to stand in the school carpark watching her dc at Playtime and try to talk to them through the gate which would upset them. Then I think she threatened a member of staff.

We’ve got one in our family.

her eldest is ASD. The other four dc all have some sort of illness, she’s also insistent that they are all ASD despite having bullied school/docs into having them assessed and the assessments coming back that they are not ASD. Social services ended up getting involved and it turned out things were a lot worse than we knew.

The daily fb posts of ASD quotes, the videos of her ASD son having meltdowns, the highly intrusive medical information she shared of her dc online and the restraining order the school took out on her were actually the tip of the iceberg. Truly shocking.

id keep a close eye on her dc op. As they get older they will push back and start asking questions. They may need some support.

Jesus christ what is wrong with people? I have two on the spectrum wouldn't dream of putting their struggles on the Internet for the world to see!

Monty36 · 16/09/2026 15:45

Social media is to blame for all this. I went to A and E with my late mother and it was packed with well, what seemed like whole families saying into their mobiles ‘we are at A and E’. They were all on mobile phones taking pictures etc.
Looking at who was sat on the seats I sometimes struggled to work out who was having the accident or emergency. The place was rammed.

The next day I had reason to take mum into A and E again. She really should have been kept in overnight as she broke her wrist. Anyway, she had a stroke and back we went.

Snow had fallen overnight.

A and E was empty apart from a couple of other people and me and mum.

The need for attention and high drama is fuelled by social media. The need for validation by others. People write things to gain sympathy or support. The language people use, more extreme, to gain attention. It is like a disease.
And your SIL is affected by it. And no, it will not be good for her mental health.

BoredZelda · 16/09/2026 15:32

You seem overly involved in her life. Have you got much going on in yours?

That pretty much sounds like her, Its partly my concern the effect on the kids. I do actually have an old work mate who has 4 asd kids and when it got to the youngest I think she just presumed he would be diagnosed too from a baby. I'd never paid much attention to them though so I couldn't say if that is the same scenario

Well in all fairness I agree with ignoring her, I just couldn't believe the a&e post earlier.
I suffer with my own MH and I'd of liked to have helped her if possible but in 2 minds as I'm fully aware it's none of my business
. I feel sorry for my niece as I don't think she is as "autistic" as she's making out that was my main annoyance with her & when I started to lose patience with her. Poor girl didn't want ear defenders on and everything she was fiddling with them SIL jumped in to put them back properly.

Posts are now hidden of hers and I will look forward to the next family get together in a couple of weeks 😆

For the record, I used to get on with her really well it's only last 2/3 years I've seen a different side to her and she's actually quite different to how she comes across on SM.

Block her on sm ? She feeds off her followers so don't be one.

its awkward when family though isn't it. I've hidden her posts a few times so guess can just go back to that and then she's none the wiser

Iluvgenehunt · 16/09/2026 15:06

Might there be financial gain if she gets her children all labelled with something or other? A Pip? Or carer's allowance?

HelloCheekyCat · 16/09/2026 15:04

ColdAsAWitches · 16/09/2026 14:47

Ignore her. Who gives a shit, it doesn't affect you.

If it is affecting her kids shouldn't OP give a shit?
At what point does it become a safeguarding issue or an abusive situation?

LaidOnYourBackWithTheBoyWithTheArabStrap · 16/09/2026 14:49

Unfollow/hide her and if she starts up in person remain as neutral as possible- zero attention.

I have someone very similar in my family- to the point I wondered at first if this post was about them 😳 I found out recently I am definitely not the only one in my family sick to the back teeth of my relative’s behaviour. People just don’t want to be bitches about it.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 16/09/2026 14:43

She sounds so annoying. I know people like this who tag themselves in on Facebook into A and E or post cryptic hospital pictures. Just remove them, it’s pathetic attention seeking.

LarryForPrimeMinister · 16/09/2026 14:39

Just delete her off social media. How irritating.

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 16/09/2026 14:37

It's ok not to like her, it's ok for others to like her, remove/mute/ignore the social media.

MyManinCaracas · 16/09/2026 14:37

My sister is like this. Posts pictures from hospital bed with no explanation of why she’s there, cryptic posts about things can only get better….it’s tiresome

SpottyPyjama · 16/09/2026 14:32

She sounds annoying, but it’s your choice to let it bother you.

powersthatbe · 16/09/2026 14:32

Stay away from FB. There is nothing for you to do here except remove yourself from the situation.

outerspacepotato · 16/09/2026 14:18

Stay off her social media.

GiveOverRover · 16/09/2026 14:17

The people that aren't as bothered about her behaviour probably don't see it, if it all stems around Facebook rants. Stay off Facebook, it will do you the power of good. She's not your responsibility, you don't need to "do something" about her, back away, and mind your business.

DozyCrow · 16/09/2026 14:10

I used to do the school run with a mum like this. Her youngest was a skinny little thing and she was always tagging herself at GOSH for an apparent lung condition 'that will only ever get worse". She visited the GP weekly with one or other of her kids, I think she had them on speed dial. She too would post cryptic messages hoping people would comment 'hope everything is ok', or like her posts. Her two DDs are grown now and the youngest is, let's say, not a frail woman, and she's extremely healthy. No idea what happened to the awful lung condition.
