To ask if this sounds like ovulation cramps or does it warrant a GP visit?

I'm 28, never had children and no chance of pregnancy. Over the last 6 months or so I've been having this mid-cycle pain that is not like my usual ovulation pain (which is a short sharp twinge of pain lasting seconds). This is aching in my lower back, pain in my lower stomach and nausea and sometimes vomiting. There's no spotting (although I did have spotting earlier this year before this pain started) and my period is otherwise regular and normal. It's bad enough that I've had to cancel plans for it and stay home as I don't want to do anything but lie in bed. It doesn't feel like my normal period pain either (which are cramps further down in my lower back and hips). It only lasts a couple of days and then I'm back to normal.

I was going to book a GP appointment but when I asked my Mum and sister about it and they said it sounds like normal ovulation pain. I know you can get cramps with ovulation but is it normal for this to start up suddenly at 28? I don't want to waste the GP's time, especially when the pain is so intermittent.

You will not be wasting the GP’s time. You have new and painful symptoms and should get them checked out, regardless of what your mother and sister think.

My ovulation pain lasts bang on 6hrs each time. One side or the other sometimes both. Been the same since I was a teenager and in 40s now. It's so painful sometimes that sweat drips off my hands and I'm not a sweaty person. I usually vomit and get upset stomach too. Never back pain or ache though. It's a very deep constant aching/throbbing pain similar to stitch. I don't have painful periods or other health issues just this random ovulation pain every month. I've had 3 babies too and it comes back as soon as I ovulate again.
I'd say see your doctor as this is new for you

Have you pulled a core muscle? Or injured yourself. It sounds like it could be muscle spasm or something.

I think it’s sensible to see a GP

Same as me it got worse as I got older. The pain also lasted longer - used to be half a day then was a couple of weeks & quite severe pain by the time I hit menopause at 45. I found taking long acting ibuprofen at the first sign of discomfort worked for me. If I waited until the pain got severe it was needing naproxen & codeine to get through work. Far worse than period cramps!

I had my ovaries scanned for cysts a couple of times but they never found anything significant - just hormones & ovulation

I was surprised when I first found that an egg follicle can be 24mm in diameter when mature - about an inch. Imagine having a lump that size rupture anywhere else. No wonder it hurts.

No, not normal OP.

Most people have a mild twinge or nothing at all. Most importantly, it’s not normal for you - we all know how our bodies usually behave so any change from the norm is concerning.

I haven't injured myself, I thought I must have done the first time I had the pain like I'd pulled a muscle or something internally. But nope!

Please go and ask for a scan. Doctors often overlook symptoms and brush them off. As someone with ovarian cancer I advise anyone to push to be taken seriously about any gynaecological issues.

dedinitely go to the GO. I had similar, mainly the nausea thing but also a twinge rather than a proper pain, it woke me in the night times though. It turned out to be an ovarian cyst which I had removed about 20’years ago. I started feeling the same twinge a year or so ago so at an ultrasound which was unrelated I asked if she’d check my ovary, lo and behold another cyst! It’s much smaller and a simple cyst so doesn’t need removal unless I want it removed.
I had the first, enormous cyst removed and went on to have two children so not an issue re fertility in case you’re worried

^^ definitely go to GP (sorry I tried to edit but it’s on my phone so I can’t see what I’m typing lol

This was me, I noticed it now and again younger but it really kicked in in my late 20s and worsened after I had children. I don't have heavy bleeding but ovulation could last days sometimes it would trigger pelvic pain right up until my next period. It's long been suspected endometriosis and I've just been diagnosed last week with Adenomyosis, I am absolutely certain I have Endo now as they do often go together and my symptoms are much more on the Endo side. I've never had heavy bleeding or fertility issues, it's all been pelvic gastric and bladder symptoms the main one being debilitating ovulation pain and symptoms
