Does anyone else hate working no matter the job?

I know I've got no choice, I'm not intending to live off anybody else, I'm mid 30s so I've likely got at least another 30 years.

The problem likely lies with me but I find that no matter what role I do, I'm unhappy in it. I've job hopped a little which I'm embarrassed about, as people comment on it and make jokes sometimes, and I wish I were just like everybody else.

I've always worked full-time since graduating and never been out of work, I've never earned over about 32k and would love to know what it's like to be a high earner but don't see it likely. I know 32k is above min wage but it doesn't stretch very far these days.

I qualified as a teacher but failed to be a good one as I couldn't handle the behaviour in schools. I did supply work but I need stability to pay my mortgage. I have a modern languages degree but roles like translation and interpretation are almost redundant now.

I'm in healthcare now in a supervisory role and I've gone down to 4 days a week which helps, with better hours but it's still a slog. I'm starting a leadership diploma which I hope will help me to progress further, but I just feel unhappy in whatever I do.

Does anyone else feel like this and have any advice?

Yanbu! I've got what many people would think of as a good, fulfilling, interesting job. It's flexible and decent enough salary.
I still hate going to work everyday and would rather not, it's just holding me back from the stuff I actually want to be doing with my time. But I need to earn so here I am for the next 3-4 decades.

Annoyedbyhusband · 16/09/2026 12:58

What actually motivates you, for me it's money and new things - so I work in tech, I consistently upskill and have a particular pension amount in mind.
I couldn't do a caring, vocational, people focussed job, I also don't care about policy or government, I also don't like strict hours. I have found something that suits how I like to work, where and what I like to work on and pays me what I need to feel happy. I know many people could never do a desk job for example, a lot of people like to work with people, many people have a vocational calling for something.
I think it sounds like you haven't found anything that inspires you yet. I would start with your motivation, if you could design your perfect day, where would you wake up, what would be doing in the morning, what house, what car or no car, are you in a forest, city, beach, your home town, or across the world, what would you go outside and do with your day? For example, for some people it might be to live in a beach shack and suba dive all day, some people it might be about making a difference to childrens lives or look after animals, some people it might be a large house and a fancy car and going into a nice office where they are the boss.
Once you have this picture in mind you can work backwards to see what exactly you need to do to get there.
If you have no goals then you will always be unhappy. Someone on a forum once told me to read the book 'Get Rich Lucky Bitch' and I did and it has this excercise in it, and some others that can really help you to figure out where you want to get to.

i absolutely hate it. I’m typing this from my desk at work. I live alone so when I get home my flat is always a complete mess as I don’t have the time or energy to clean it. However when I’m off work I’ve got so much energy - get up, tidy up, long walks, creating things like art or music and learning language. Seeing my friends and my family. I barely have time for myself. I earn £27.5k and it’s not enough. I can’t afford a car once I pass my test. I’m going to have to get a second job to save up for holidays. I’m on my arse.

I am sick of this and I’m only 30. I want children and to being up a family in a modest home with a little garden so I can plant my own food and maybe raise a couple of chickens. I want my own business where I can fix up cars. This life to me seems so easy but it’s so unattainable. I didn’t realise who I was or what I wanted until lockdown, since lockdown my life has gone downhill, I lost my baby and still had to go to work. I’ve not met a man who wants marriage and children. I wanted to be like Bilbo Baggins when he says “I want to see MOUNTAINS, Gandalf!”. I am at my happiest in the countryside and could never afford to live there no matter where I worked because I don’t think I’d ever get a job that pays me more than this.

I just hate it. I hate how my life is and I know I’d be happier if I wasn’t in the slog. If im to work I want it on MY terms. Nothing in my life has been on my terms.

Nuttysquirrel50 · 16/09/2026 12:44

It may be the same for me because I've never been a high earner and never had the benefits that some people seem to get like company car, trips abroad, expenses etc. Just the statutory minimum.

I like my job but if money wasn’t an issue I’m not sure I would want to continue working

BillieWiper · 16/09/2026 12:42

In a way yeah I've always hated the feeling of working for someone else and them having control over me. Like I feel a desperate urge to try and do the bare minimum. Also I get bored really easily. But I think that's because I've only ever done fairly lowly crappy jobs.

TooWoop · 16/09/2026 12:42

I am in my early 50’s and have worked in one way or another since I was 12 (paper round). I have teenage children, I’m going through the menopause and have parents that need supporting. I feel totally exhausted and tbh spend a lot of time feeling like there should be more pleasure in life. I am trying to do more things in my spare time. I so wish I was in a position that I didn’t have to work financially and could do some volunteering

aliceyyyy2654 · 16/09/2026 12:39

YANBU, my ideal job is no job!

Galadali · 16/09/2026 12:26

Yes! I genuinely love the work I do and the people I work with. It's the demand to be in the same place at the same time every day for someone else's benefit. I think it's a neurodivergent thing for me - possible PDA/definite AuDHD. Same with school too - spent most of my school life thinking up excuses not to go, and I've been the same in other jobs I've had too. I'm not lazy or unreliable - I just really struggle with the day in/day out demand to get up and work for someone else.
When I had my own business it was totally different - I'd work 24/7 if I could. Unfortunately didn't pay enough to live on though ...

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/09/2026 12:25

Yes I think a lot of people do!

I’m 47 now and also just feel very tired - combination of my age and being a single Mum to teens whilst having a busy job I think!

I can’t go down to less than part time because of my overheads unfortunately so have to keep going. I hope to get to a point where I enjoy working again at some point!

MyManinCaracas · 16/09/2026 12:22

I do now, but I’m 58 and have worked since I was 16. I’m tired, but back in the day I loved working and felt a tremendous sense of accomplishment from it.

This is basically how I feel.

Myremoteislost · 16/09/2026 12:17

I do too. I'm an odd sort of person who hates change and anything different, but I also hate things being the same all the time because I get bored! I spend my time at work wishing I could just go home, but I've also got another 30 years of this to endure.

Greedybilly · 16/09/2026 12:17

I get bored very quickly and find most jobs/people quite disappointing tbh.

Anothercake · 16/09/2026 12:10

I'm self employed, pick my own (very limited) hours, earn really good money, do something I'm genuinely interested in, and still wake up on a work day thinking fuccccccccccck.

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/09/2026 12:08

No. I have hated individual jobs, I definitely would like to work less and had miserable experiences within otherwise ok jobs but hating work altogether? No.

For all its faults, work has allowed me to support my family. Its given me a sense of purpose and focus, intellectual stimulation and social interaction.

Its hugely enriched my life overall and even if I didn’t need the money I wouldn’t want not to have worked.

Dweetfidilove · 16/09/2026 12:03

YANBU at all, and while I don't 'hate' working; I wouldn't if I didn't need to. I dream of all the amazing things I could be doing if not chained to this desk.
If health and strength serve me well, I'm planning to not go a day over 60. Sooner if I get lucky 🤞🏾.

Midseptemberwoes · 16/09/2026 11:51

I do too.

I had a job I really enjoyed but the unpaid overtime hours became way too much and I had to leave.

Now I'm in a job where I'm not as busy and I am totally bored and unhappy again.

I dont think I'll ever be happy at work.

I think doing less hours or days is the only resolution, but unfortunately I am stuck to a 40 hour 5 day week for the money.
