AIBU to oppose housing 1,000 undocumented young men near Piddington?

1000 replies

PiddingtonFan · 16/09/2026 09:38

We dont need anymore undocumented young males.

1000 proposed to be housed near Piddington. Young males from a different culture.

AIBU to agree with them. Enough undocumented males. Too many males overwhelming a small population. 😪

I too felt like this at first but it does sound like this is treated as more of an open prison.

They are being housed there on an unused military base as apparently an alternative to using hostels/hotels.

The barracks are already set up to house thousands of men and have things like kitchens, laundry facilities, bedrooms etc.

So they’re housed there and have certain restrictions etc and then they are spread out once they’ve passed certain checks etc.

At the beginning of this thread I was opposed to the idea but actually it does make sense.

What restrictions are there? The last I saw was they had to take hi vis vests as in danger on roads without pavements, but they couldn’t be told not to leave.

What restrictions do you mean?

Asylum seeker isn’t an ethnicity so how do ethnicity stats help you?

I agree crime stats by ethnicity would be useful, and maybe different in Scotland but it’s possible for police to record that in England but they’re really bad at it so the data is a mess.

They do record it in Scotland as admitted in an foi response its just not in the data that they release because the snp have banned them from doing so, much like they did with the number of men that they housed in women's jails.

This makes sense.

So basically it’s like a cat D/open prison.

Except that men can come and go at will, which is not the case in an open prison (though of course some people do abscond from open prisons).

Why should Piddington not take their fair share? Surely their fair share might be about 30 or so, not 1.200?
I'm as liberal lefty as they come but the idea of dumping any 1200 men in an area with a population of only 300 is just barmy!

Must admit I haven't read up on what exactly happens once they are there. Do they receive any training or integration advice, are they helped or policed by any service or just ignored until their review comes up?

I’m sympathetic to the point re numbers but the problem is that available sites are generally situated in rural or semi-rural areas where the nearest village is usually small. Over the road from the asylum centre is a prison, and another one 200 miles away in another nice village same issue - often in rural areas.

No increase in crime locally? No decrease in people’s perception of safety? I’d be fine with asylum seekers if I knew they kept the same values as the auk citizens, but sexual assaults are really high in cities like Glasgow which has lots of asylum seekers but the police refuse to hide crime stats by ethnicity so there’s no way of knowing how safe people are. We aren’t being properly informed and so cannot come to a conclusion.

Has crowborough reported any problems with their new residents?

I have in-laws in Crowborough who are regularly out marching in opposition to the former cadet training centre being used to accommodate asylum seekers.

They say that there's been "a case" of indecent assault committed by someone from the camp. If there'd been more, I'm sure they would have mentioned it!

I may know more next week, as I'll be seeing them at the weekend.

Actually you are incorrect. As we move more and more toward a global society, rhetoric aimed at demonising or accusing ethnic minorities of being overrepresented in crime statistics will only serve to sow division within our communities. Nobody has the right to live in a homogeneous society, no person owns Britain, it is open to any and all who would want to come and make a life for themselves here.

And they should be free to do so without bigots and online rabble rousers instigating sedicious rumours about 'grooming gangs' or whatever right wing myth they dream up in that particular month. It's tantamount to domestic terrorism as far as I am concerned.

@DebbieSavage I think we are way past right wing rumours/myth as far as grooming gangs are concerned!

I wonder how the village coped with hundreds of squaddies roaming around.

You mean airmen.
The raf had their own medics shops and facilities, they were gainfully employed, spoke the language and weretge same culture had access to vehicles and the raf police and comand structures to keep them in line so completely different from what is coming

springintospring26 · 16/09/2026 11:15

I was the same for six years. It’s only in the past two months that there’s an issue. It could be a really bad mix of men. I don’t know and tbh im
so exhausted I don’t care. Between me and the asylum seekers ( so next door to me) is another HMO. Lovely guys no issues.

1200 unknown men just dumped somewhere and allowed to do what they like? That's not OK anywhere

I live in London and we have a lot of asylum seekers living here (including very local to me). For the most part, it's not a problem. Why should Piddington not take their fair share?

nomas · 16/09/2026 11:27

LakieLady · 16/09/2026 11:27

Hoardasurass · 16/09/2026 10:39

Those jobs dont exist in or around piddington and even if they did these are undocumented asylum seekers (ie have no legal right to remain as their claims haven't been possessed) who have no right to work so can't do any job. These men will then be turfed out of the asylum base the moment they are granted leave to remain, where will they go then and where will they live as theres no houses for them anywhere near.
Also these men dont speak English in most cases and dont understand the culture and even the government recognises that the way they treat women and girls is so problematic that they produced a leaflet telling them not to harass, sexually harass, sexually assault or rape women.
This camp is a vawg disaster waiting to happen

I worked on a homeless prevention and resettlement project and worked with 5 clients who had recently been granted refugee status. All of them had been allocated to this area by the Home Office under some sort of dispersal arrangement. While seeking asylum, they had been accommodated in several different parts of the country.

The most recent of these was approx 5 years ago, when I moved to another job.
Are these arrangements no longer happening and, if so, do you know when they stopped?

It seems very short-sighted if the process has changed.

Hoardasurass · 16/09/2026 11:25

olivepicanto · 16/09/2026 11:04

How do you know that they are not refugees or asylum seekers

and how exactly would you put them straight on a flight back to their country? Buy a fleet of planes and just leave them in the departure lounge until it's time

ludicrous

How do we know that they aren't asylum seekers easy they travelled through multiple safe countries, including those with the same language and culture that they come from, all of which they could have and should have claimed asylum in, but instead chose to continue on to the UK ergo they are economic migrants not asylum seekers whatever they may claim when they get here

EasternStandard · 16/09/2026 11:13

In mass accommodation, would you be ok with that?

Ie if you were in Piddington would you say ok fine?

Edited

I would have concerns and would want assurances and would want to review all the plans that have been shared online. But yes, based on my prior experience of living near asylum seeker HMOs and 'very low' crime rate reported by Essex police near RAF Wethersfield asylum seeker barracks and subject to careful review of the plans, I would be ok with it.

I'm not sure the asylum seekers will want to head to Piddington village anyway.

Google says Piddington has:

No shop.
No pub (other than the occasional pop-up pub)
No school.
No café.

nolongersurprised · 16/09/2026 11:21

Yep it’s fine as parody. It’s about right.

Ooohaaahjustalittlebit · 16/09/2026 11:23

I think it's simple - all the people who say they would be fine to live there can offer to swap homes with the people who live there and aren't happy about it

It's a lot easier to say you are fine with an idea when it's just going to remain a hypothetical issue

Contain4 · 16/09/2026 11:22

Cheese55 · 16/09/2026 11:18

They will have a dedicated doctor and do not need to find jobs because they will move out of the accommodation once approved.

This makes sense.

So basically it’s like a cat D/open prison.

This is quite annoying. Goodness knows I am no fan of Reform but people have to be able to talk about what they want on here.

I actually suspect the general population is more inclined to think the way the OP does than the population of MN.

I completely agree. Unfortunately Debbie only pops up on immigration threads to wind people up.

i live in a deprived inner city, we have two bail hostels, a massive custody suite that serves the whole city, and nearly 50% of the total of supported housing for homeless people with complex needs (drug/alchohol/mental health issues). We have high crime, a trip to the local supermarket often involves seeing crack being smoked round the back of the building, being approached by beggars, seeing drinkers fighting in the children's play park (nobody takes their kids on there due to the drunks) . We have had years and years of this, it barely makes the local press let alone the likes of the Mail because communities like mine have been treated as dumping grounds for decades. I have had my way blocked in the street by a group of pissed up (white British) males who pushed and shoved me. Pointless reporting it as nothing will be done.

I would 100% rather be housed near immigrant accommodation than the bail hostels.

They’re a massive problem and it’s often not the ex criminals using them that are the problem - it’s the ones that hang around to exploit them.

I know many people who stand outside these hostels who give them free drugs - then they either get addicted/re-addicted or they’re in debt.

(And then of course you have the rapists and peadophiles).
