To ask if it’s worth seeing the GP about lack of periods

I just turned 30 in August and haven’t had a period for around three years. I’ve been irregular since I started at 11. Just think because I’m quite overweight (which I’m working on) they won’t take me seriously

Yes. You could have thyroid issues

Smokeywater · 19/09/2026 19:37

I would say do a pregnancy test first - even though you know for sure you aren't pregnant - it would skip the first question they will ask which is could you be pregnant and speed things up

Go to your GP, don't leave without an answer. It could be pcos. I was irregular since my very first period and was diagnosed at 16 and again at 32. There is mixed responses about whether you need to have regular periods. My GP said it wasn't a problem but others have said you should be given something to induce them. I chose to go on the implant which stopped them altogether.

For women with PCOS it is recommended to ensure regular periods at least every 3-4 months (which can be induced with medication) OR they are on contraception which keeps the womb lining thin such as the Mirena coil or combined pill.

Why would you assume that?

Smears aren't usually done by GPs.

It just seems crazy not to go to the gp about lack of period for 3 years, so not exactly crazy of me to wonder if op hadn’t had her smears. I know my mother hasn’t, I think she’s silly for that. Of course if I’m wrong then apologies op.

Yes of course you should get it checked out op. Don’t tell me you haven’t had a smear too?

As everyone else said, you absolutely should. At 30, you may well want to be trying for a child at some point in the next 5 years, so you need to get ahead of this now and know what your options are. Especially if you might need fertility treatment, it’s worth knowing that and being able to reach the rules in your area eg if there is an age cut off for NHS treatment.

Yes unfortunately it’s 35 in my area so relatively low.

I'm a GP and I would absolutely want to see you (I'd want to see anyone who hadn't had a period for more that 3 months to investigate)

I agree, I've had to go to my GP because my periods have stopped. I am older than the OP though and i'm underweight, which probably doesn't help.
Do you enjoy your job CoolAsACourgette?

Yes op go to your gp. My sister didn’t gave a period for a year and went to her gp who was shocked she’d left it that long. She had some bloods and a scan. Pcos was diagnosed and now she’s on the mini pill. You need to protect your womb lining by having regular periods x

FYI The mini pill stops periods. You don’t need to have regular periods.

fashionqueen0123 · 19/09/2026 17:47

I’ve met women in their ttc journey who lost a lot of weight and their periods came back. But I also had a slim friend who has to take a tablet everyday for a pituitary non benign tumour. So it’s not always just being overweight or obese.

Get checked out. You can still loose weight while waiting for appts

Please, please go to your GP and not Mumsnet. Please.

OneNewEagle · 19/09/2026 17:26

I had a health problem in my late 20s one of the symptoms being no periods. The GP was great and I was referred to a gynaecologist.

gorillainbasketballcircle · 19/09/2026 17:15

A family member stopped having periods in her mid-20s - it was POI. Get checked out!

Do you not think op could Google herself? Why are you posting bloody AI responses? The is a chat thread not a ai search bar.

👏

Ah they absolutely should take you seriously. I would speak with your GP.
I've had to do similar recently, but i'm quite a bit older than you.

DoAWheelie · 16/09/2026 03:58

Mine got more and more irregular for a few years before stopping late last year at 35. It turned out that I have severe hypothyroidism, and I'm currently having my first period of the year now that I've been on meds for a few weeks.

I'm fat and they took it seriously from the start and did all sorts of tests.

Do you mind me asking please if you had other symptoms or was it just the loss of periods

Yes even if you have an idea of the source of it. I.e you know you have pmos (formally pcos) it's something to check out. I didnt have a period for over a year. I have PMOS. Had a blood test to rule out some causes and referred for another ultrasound. Nothing showed up. In the end i tried myoinnistol and had a period within a few weeks and then regular ever since.

I think it’s pcos obviously not confirmed but that’s what other symptoms I have point to

Tillow4ever · 16/09/2026 08:36

Definitely get it checked out op. It could be something serious, but more likely something easy to resolve (eg iron deficiency, b12 deficiency, thyroid issues, etc).

Definitely worth seeing your GP. Going three years without periods is something that should be checked, regardless of your weight, and you deserve to be taken seriously. There can be several reasons for it, so it’s better to get it properly investigated.
