AIBU to feel overwhelmed by a baby who will not be put down?

I just can’t put my DD down during the day without her screaming. I’ve tried everything to transfer her but she wakes the moment she’s out of my arms. I use a carrier sometimes which she falls asleep in and gives me some hands free time but she will only stay in it a certain amount of time before fussing to get out.

It is killing my mental health and I’m getting resentful. I can’t even put her on her play mat or do any tummy time! I have a toddler who is feeling neglected because every time I try and take care of him she cries.

She screams constantly when I put her down, I can’t do anything, I feel trapped

My husband is home and shared the load in the evening but it’s not the same.

Can anyone share any advice or give me a reality check please

I would assume the baby has a little pain somewhere and feels better when carried.

I'm wondering this too. My DS was just like this for the first 8 - 12 months. It took us a while to realise ( I'm mostly sure now that I'm right) that he was suffering his stool. It was often tough, and it took a concerted effort of plenty of fluids, prune juice, and Movicol (when he was old enough) to finally unlock our happy little boy.

I was so miserable, but my god he must have been so uncomfortable.

We could have figured out our problem sooner , and I hope you figure yours out soon. At least you won't be fobbed off by doctors like we were for being "first time parents" should you need to talk to one

Agree with this. My dd was same and she had tongue tie. I was BF.

my eldest had a tongue tie too, might be worth looking into?

My eldest was like that. I had to put him in his cot or bassinet awake and rock him to sleep or he'd be up 5 minutes after I put him down. Youngest is 4 months now and I can cuddle him to sleep and put him down and he'll stay asleep, it makes like so much nicer. He seems to enjoy watching his toddler brother mess around, so fingers crossed you'll have that soon too.

Also to add like prior poster my husband did all chores and cooking and also even had to cut up my food for me. If people haven't had a baby like this they absolutely don't understand and will piss you off. My son is now a joy as a toddler but I still get triggered when I see poeple out and about with settled babies. I feel the normal baby experience was stolen from me and I will not be risking it ever again.

My one and only son was also like this. Like the prior poster we just had to wait it out. He's 2 5 now and still very needy but nothing like those awful newborn days. If he was awake he was screaming. It got better when I eliminated dairy (breastfeeding) but didn't resolve. I Highly recommend the book the highly sensitive child. I spent all day every day pacing around with him in a carrier (he never let me sit) or bouncing on a yoga ball. It was truely the most miserable time in my life. It will pass though. I suggest loop earplugs and when anyone will take a turn of pacing with the baby in the carrier let them! I had several carriers the ergobaby embrace was by far the comfiest

Okay 3 months, you’re close to the time where she’ll really start to get more interested in the world.

They change so quickly at that age.

Some babies just want to be held a lot more than others.

We got a reflux wedge pillow for our clingy baby and it’s changed everything. We put him in it after a feed (if we’re not holding him) and he sleeps so well and it’s stopped him crying too

they are not safe for overnight sleeping but a game changer for the odd occasion in the day

I had one of those. There really wasn’t a solution except to live through it. There were moments I feared I might break. We rarely left the house and DH had to take over all chores. He even took to cutting up my food so I could eat one handed.

It didn’t last forever and now I have a beautiful young adult leaving for university soon. I can’t really remember when the screaming stopped. She was always a hard baby and a harder child than average. I never got to be one of those parents who sits and chats while their children play. I can just tell you that stage did end eventually.

You might turn a corner very soon, I hear that it gets better for a lot of people after 3-4 months (it was the case for me). Until then, try to get help to get some time for yourself and quality time with your toddler.

YANBU.
What kind of carrier are you using? Front or back? Maybe a change would help?
Sorry. Too many questions. It gets better, truly Flowers

Perhaps its a reflux issue?

COOMACHEO · 15/09/2026 21:52

Bless you that’s sooooo hard… does she sleep in the pram/ buggy on walks? Would one of those cot buzz devices help?
can you get help? Pay for someone to take her in the buggy for a walk for an hour and you sleep?
