Shower door shattered on me, AIBU to expect the resort manager to contact me today?

I'm on holidays in a 5 star camping and resort in Spain

We went sightseeing all morning. When we got back to our house I took a quick shower. When I slid back the shower door the whole glass door shattered. It rained down on me.

I called my husband. But he said the sound of the glass shattered had made him come running anyway.

Our 4yr old was watching TV 2yr old was asleep.

My cuts are mainly like paper cuts bar 2 on the hand I opened the door with. They are deeper.

The resort staff brought me to an on site dr. She put paper stitches on and said don't get it wet for today or tomorrow.

I keep thinking about if my DC had been in the shower with me. That's where we've washed them daily. But trying to keep the what ifs away since it didn't happen. Although the 4 yr old asked if I would never shower again. I just kept saying I will it was an accident and I am fine.

Anyway, the staff that came and cleaned up were all great. They took the door away but haven't replaced it.

The dr told me I'd need more bandages. I asked the staff member who seemed to be co ordindinating things will I keep a receipt to be reimbursed? Also that my husbands clothes will need dry cleaning, there was a surprising amount of blood.

He said he is "just the driver, but he would ask the manager to call me"

We took DC to the pool where I paddled/ 2nd set of eyes on DC

Then I was just wrecked so went to bed for 3 hours. My blood pressure had been 139/98 and then the crash after the excitement

Anyway I'm annoyed now that the manager hasn't called. I phoned reception and they said there is no manager until morning. But this happened around 1pm. They would have been here.

Any advice?

Perhaps the driver didn’t actually pass on that message? I know it’s good form for the manager to speak with you anyway, even just to be the person to do the incident report and apologise, but they could have just thought you had all the staff that handled the issue so they didn’t necessarily need to make an appearance. Now that the people on the desk know you want to speak with the manager you’ll probably get a knock on the door in the morning. As I’m writing this it’s also possible that the manager did come when you were at the pool.

Make sure you take pictures, log the issue in the accident book in your own words, get home and sue them!

I'm going to call to reception in the morning and ask about the incident log book.

@TY78910 they said he would telephone. I think the driver seemed fairly good so I'd be surprised if he didn't pass on the message. 5 staff members to get all the glass out/ carry away the door frame. Then the co ordinator man. He did come back later to take more pictures. The doctor. Then the 2 reception staff after I saw the doc.

I'd be surprised if the manager didn't hear about this

Shower glass does just shatter this way occasionally.
It sounds like you have been treated very well today by the staff available. I hope the manager gets hold of you tomorrow and checks you are OK, and gives you the plan for replacing the door or relocating you.

They go with a bang, dont they!

Good plan — absolutely make sure you have a record of everything that happened and you sign the records yourself (and take pics etc!)

Sue them for what!?

Sometimes glass things break, unless there has been some kind of negligence then what in earth is she suing for?

I’m so sorry this happened to you

I had an incident regarding practical safety shall we say, in a hotel. And I was on my own. It was another “ near miss” and if I had been knocked unconscious or something, I don’t know what would’ve happened because I was on my own!

It did really upset me, but the hotel didn’t give two hoots. They sorted out what they could, it happened about 11 pm at night which wasn’t thrilling because I had to have a couple of blokes in the room (I stood outside) and there was no manager on duty at that time.

But yeah, the hotel really didn’t give two hoots. It should be different in your case because you’re actually injured. But I was surprised how much they didn’t care.

I was incredibly shaken up and actually the men who came to sort the room out were very shocked. Also if you look at the mechanics of what happened, I would say it was a building safety negligence issue (the hotel was new) But the actual hotel management just didn’t care.

I think the world is just like this now.

I made a point of saying to them that it wasn’t good enough and they just offered me some food vouchers.

but obviously, no one is going to sue for a near miss. What happened to you is an actual incident. I would say that you need to get all costs out of them and given that you are actually injured, I would ask them to cover any linked medical stuff.

I hope you’re okay. I was properly shocked for about 24 hours afterwards.

To the extent that I don’t really want to explain what it was, in theory I think most people would be horrified by it but in practice… on here you never know.

I don't plan to sue them. A runner/ piece of the shower mechanism fell off. So I'd say that's poor maintenance.

But I'd like them to pay for the bandages etc we've had to go buy.

2 days of our holiday have been hugely impacted too. I can't get my hand wet tomorrow either. So we are looking up a soft play and some other indoor/ dry activities

@EmeraldRoulette it was pretty surreal. Dh and ds heard the huge crash. He came in and I was covered in blood. He cleaned the blood so the cleaners didn't have to handle it.

I don't really remember the sound. I just remember thinking. Right don't move (I was still holding the door that had fallen off).

When dh came in i said get your shoes on. Then he put down towels on the floor which was covered in glass. Took the door off me. Got my sandles and helped me out. I got some glass in my toes but all out now

We then went outside on and he "hosed" me down with jugs of water to get the rest of the glass shards off. I got a good few cuts all over but super light they will heal quickly. Sort of paper cut deep

Check your insurance cover and did you bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for free treatment?

I thought those shower doors were supposed to crumble away that wouldn’t leave a cut, although I suppose that that’s not really completely possible.

I’m glad you haven’t got any deep cuts - maybe that’s what they mean with how it breaks. My skin will get a scar or mark from absolutely anything that happens but I guess not a paper cut. But you mentioned bandages?

anyway, for what it’s worth, you can have all the sympathy from me 💐

I find it strange that there are so many health and safety rules in place, but it’s not standard to have the laminated kind of glass so that it can’t shatter in a shower.

Just a question. Did the glass crumble into cubes, or shatter leaving pointy shards? Because if its the second one, id actually ge kicking up more of a fuss.

Agree that sometimes glass things break that’s not in dispute, but not usually from normal careful use as described.

I would want to see the records of the type of glass used, the safety certificates, the inspection/maintenance records to check they properly sourced, installed and maintained safe glass doors.

No way of knowing if it would be successful without seeing those records but if they’ve cut safety corners and injured OP as a result, then she could claim personal injury compensation and potentially loss of enjoyment of her holiday

Cubes it was safety glass but it still cut me where it touched. The deeper cut is on the hand I opened the door with.

The other cuts look more like scratches/ paper cuts. The ones on my feet are small too. One tiny one was deeper but I stopped moving when I felt the first cut. DH threw a jug of water over my feet before I put my sandles on.

I went and met the manager today. He was very nice and friendly. I was a bit surprised they made it out like a huge favour that they paid for me to see the doctor. I asked about dry cleaning/ the cost of the other bandages from the pharmacy he said i needed to fill in a competensation form.

I do think that it would have been a nice gesture if they had to offered something like a dinner voucher. But they didn't so I filled in a form requesting competensation.

I did manage to reassure the 4 yr old it was safe to shower but I found several cubes of glass when I was in there. He was worried something would happen and I'd need to be taken away again
