My parents have become insufferable.

I am really struggling with my parents. Both are mid-sixties, retired. It seems since retirement they have become quite bigoted, insufferable and insular in their viewpoints. Every time I meet up with them conversations revolve around:

  • Illegal immigration / people on benefits / Reform and Nigel Farage. Essentially focussing around the latest GB news story (which they watch religiously).
  • Their latest or ongoing health ailments and how poor, in their view, the NHS is.
  • Unnecessary and rude descriptions to describe other people (could be random strangers) or people they know. For example, ‘our fat neighbour has put on tons of weight.’

I used to have a fantastic relationship with my parents, particularly my father, and I’m sure he wasn’t always like this. I’m starting to dislike meeting up with them as their attitudes seem to have changed towards life and people in general, and they constantly want to discuss the latest GB News story.

Has anybody else found this has happened to their parents?

I'm similar age to your parents, and I hope I don't act like that! Are they living very isolated lives? Maybe they need to find more things to do, besides gossipping about the neighbours and watching GB News. Do they have any hobbies?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 16/09/2026 18:22

My mum is 81 and exactly like this. I can't talk about politics and have to ignore her when she says there are acceptable gay people and unacceptable gay people.

50goingon70 · 16/09/2026 18:18

I totally understand. My parents are in their 80s and my mum is the worst. She moans about exactly these 3 issues ( not Nigel Farage as she wouldn’t know who he was!) and my dad joins in. She even comments rudely on her own family members- you just give up honestly! I hope I don’t end up like them!

Xmasbaby11 · 16/09/2026 18:00

My DP are in their 80s and absolutely not like that. Their personalities have been magnified in other ways but political beliefs and tolerance remained constant.

Why the patronising sarcasm? Do we have some ageism going on?
When did I ever say I had solutions?
Give your head a wobble and get off your high horse.

Given the strength of your opinion, you must have some kind of idea what you want to do about these 'issues' you highlight so passionately?

FWIW the OPs parents have only recently started behaving in this way, whereas yours seem to go back to the 1970s... decades and decades ago....

Seems like more of a person thing, rather than an "age" thing, wouldn't you agree? Yet you're very keen to paint it as young vs old.

You obviously want to have a go at me, indeed are having a go, can’t let go of the sarcasm and have a respectful conversation.
Sorry, I’m not playing.⛹️‍♂️

Well, like I said, the traditional community was blown open by hitherto unfamiliar faces. Unfortunately, it's been made taboo to consider what the impact was on the community, under threat of being classified as 'racist.'
Personally, I think this situation contributes to the situation where the older generation are coralled into a psychological ghetto, because it's not acceptable to notice something which may have hugely impacted their lives, or family members'.
I've noticed that other nations have fiercely protected their cultures from the outside. Brits have failed to do this, and this has led to some of the difficulties we have.
Racism is an attitude of mind. Noticing societal change does not make me racist. Nor does mentioning it.
I don't look down on people of another race or skin colour, nor consider them less than myself in any way. I'm happy to welcome them as part og my ffamily, and I think that's a good acid test.

So many posters making this about their own opinions! Awful behaviour.

Another thread diverted by a discussion on ageism.

Yawn.

I don't need to hurl insults, I only need to read your post from earlier.

Are you my daughter? I shop in Tesco, have lots of medical appointments & am very disappointed that no-one stocks Red Delicious apples any more! ;-)

Racist to apples or what.

GB news audience age demographics graph, in case it helps you understand.

Now that would be interesting if we had similar graphs for many other news sources - and with numbers rather than percentages.. As it is, quite meaningless.

Anyhow, I can confidently say I'm not racist.

My offspring have married partners of other races and I have mixed race grandchildren. It's not like I value my white grandchildren over my brown skinned grandchildren.
Sorry, you can hurl the insults all you like, but the mud is not sticking.
Maybe you think I'm racist for noticing that my grandchildren have various colour skin (like MM taking offence that a member of the Royal Family was awful enough to mention the subject). Feel free to carry on. Or do something more useful.

No, it isn’t but when you are dismissed because people make assumptions about you on sight it isn’t very pleasant.
Also you only have to look at the mainstream news to see that there are plenty of prejudiced people in younger age groups. I do have sympathy with OP, it must be very difficult to deal with and I don’t think she’s being ageist but I do think that you are showing a degree of prejudice.

Nobody on this thread has made any kind of judgment on sight about anybody. I’ve pointed out older people are more likely to display these kinds of prejudice (certainly the anti Irish kind - that’s non existent in people under the age of about 60).

I am not prejudiced against older people: I am here to discuss actual real life issues (in the case of the anti Irish thread, the real life discrimination on the basis of ethic origin). The thread was repeatedly pulled away from that issue with multiple people whingeing about ageism - because presumably anti Irish discrimination isn’t as important as pointing out how they perceived discrimination against them being displayed. 🙄 It is just ridiculous.

The NHS is in a poor state. I am having to pay privately to get my child the support he needs as there is no NHS service for his medically diagnosed condition where I am ( and even in Boards which do have a service it is a poor service). Everyone I know who can afford private health insurance has bought it because of the state of the NHS.

There is an issue with rapid large scale immigration in our country.

If you are dismissing what they saying with labels rather than evidence and coherent debate, maybe it is you who is the bigot.

Shhhhh.. the virtue signallers with nothing to lose don't like people clouding the issues with facts.

GoodGirlFaith · 16/09/2026 14:23

My friends father was radicalised online by right wing nonsense. She had spoken to him and explained algorithms but turned up one day to him writing another letter and sat him down to talk to him again. She told him that she didn't recognise him. Thankfully, he appears to have listened and have stopped the 'boat people' talk AFAIK.

The irony of these same people listening to Farage again on Europe and voting to leave when we had an agreed limit on the number of migrants we would take when in the EC. And they're still listening to this man...

Being 'from an immigrant family' does not automatically mean you can't be racist.

Just like "I have a black friend, how can I be racist".

Anyhow, I can confidently say I'm not racist.

My offspring have married partners of other races and I have mixed race grandchildren. It's not like I value my white grandchildren over my brown skinned grandchildren.

Again, OP, do you ever do anything with your parents? Do you ever visit a stately home, go to the theatre or the cinema, go to a talk, visit a museum or art gallery, etc? If you do things with them, there'll be something else for you all to talk about, and I'm sure it'd do them good. And have you done anything to encourage them to take up a hobby or to volunteer - something that takes them out of the house and into the company of new people, with a ready-made mutual interest to talk about? I think you need to take action, rather than just complaining. They don't sound very happy. A book club would be great, as that's time spent reading a book every month, rather than just watching TV, and they then have a lively conversation / debate with other people who live locally, on something that is not the GB news.

OP’s parents are only in their 60s. I don’t think it’s her responsibility to “encourage “ activities. I think all she can do is tell them straight that the political talk is getting on her nerves and end the call or go home if it gets too much. It’s sad they have changed so much.

Literally could have written your post myself. Parents are the same, retired, late sixties, do nothing with their time since retiring. Their life is very dull, their days are spent watching tv, reading newspapers, going to Dr appts or Tescos. They have nothing interesting to talk about apart from complaining about tescos not selling the correct type of apples/ having to wait 20 minutes for their Dr appts, or generally moaning.

It’s partly age, partly personality. yours sound like they do nothing with their days.
I can’t change my parents, it is infuriating and sad. My mother insists she’s no time to do hobbies, and that she has a fulfilling life…I go around with my child and she’s there reading the paper for a good 2 hours…making a sandwich and pottering about, then having a ‘rest’ after lunch..another hour goes by and it’s 3pm and nothing has happened. She thinks that’s a lovely day.
I don’t know how to change it. I just will never be like that when I’m older.

My dm will say she wants to see the dc, then start moaning on at me about things, and not interacting much with them. We've never had the best rel, but I am struggling with her.

Anonymouseposter · 16/09/2026 14:11

Piglet89 · 16/09/2026 13:41

Thats my point. An older person is more likely to say something prejudiced and anti Irish like this. Also more to get sucked into the GB News loops the OP on this thread has raised.

I addressed the ageism points in one of my posts on the anti Irish thread.

The ageism what aboutery is really tedious and unfortunately plays into the narrative that older people have a tendency to be self centred and think stuff is all about them.

News flash: it’s not.
