My parents have become insufferable.

I am really struggling with my parents. Both are mid-sixties, retired. It seems since retirement they have become quite bigoted, insufferable and insular in their viewpoints. Every time I meet up with them conversations revolve around:

  • Illegal immigration / people on benefits / Reform and Nigel Farage. Essentially focussing around the latest GB news story (which they watch religiously).
  • Their latest or ongoing health ailments and how poor, in their view, the NHS is.
  • Unnecessary and rude descriptions to describe other people (could be random strangers) or people they know. For example, ‘our fat neighbour has put on tons of weight.’

I used to have a fantastic relationship with my parents, particularly my father, and I’m sure he wasn’t always like this. I’m starting to dislike meeting up with them as their attitudes seem to have changed towards life and people in general, and they constantly want to discuss the latest GB News story.

Has anybody else found this has happened to their parents?

"I"'d just point out that just because a person disagrees with your politics or your point of view that does not mean that they are "racist, right wing bigots who vote Reform and hate 'foreigners' "
Thank you for this.

Brilliant, informative post.

I never really discuss politics with friends, that's not why they're my friend. DH unfortunately occasionally gets sucked in some of my friends husbands are more forthcoming about their views.

One party I couldn't get to following surgery DH admitted they'd all got a bit hot headed and I suspect he let fly. DH then told me we're not to see them again. But wouldn't say why. WELL LIKE HELL will I not see friends of twenty years over whatever happened.

So as soon as I was mobile I called round and we caught up over a coffee.

Everyone is talking again so oil on troubled water does work.

My mums in her late 60s. She grew up in the west Mids alongside many black friends. She herself an Irish foreigner. Many of them placed in the same council tower blocks. Spent her life working as a nurse and is definitely more right wing now with age, but I can’t say I blame her. The irony.

"Mum was 21 in 1960 and so they lived through the 'swinging' 60s with peace, love and flower power. They had friends and colleagues from all races and religions."

In that case, your mum was likely a very unusual person.

At the time of the 1961 Census, the population of England & Wales was 46,104,548.

Of those, 192,031 (0.42%) were from India, Pakistan or Ceylon (nowadays Sri Lanka). A further 171,293 (0.37%) from the British Caribbean Territories. There were also 35,461 (0.08%) from British African Territories.

In addition to this there were 179,338 (0.45%) from other Commonwealth areas and 722,160 (1.6%) from foreign countries and 762,203 (1.7%) from Ireland.

Now, I wouldn't exactly count the Irish as foreigners (although they technically are) so, leaving them out, in 1961 there were around 1,300,283 (2.8%) people living in the UK who were born in a different country.

Or, to put it another way, 97.2% of the population were white British.

That your mum knew multiple people of different ethnicities suggests that she was living in one of very few places in the UK where this could be true.

These places included Birmingham 38,260 (3.46%), Islington 29,074 (12.73%), Wandsworth (26,044) 7.5%, Willesdon 22,777 (13.32%), Lambeth 21,747 (9.72%), Paddington 21,329 (18.24%), Hackney 19,840 (12.04%), Manchester 19,730 (2.98%), Hendon 17,830 (11.74%), Bradford 14,872 (5.03%), Leeds 14,013 (2.74%).

Outside of these few northern cities and parts of London, the UK in the 1960s was overwhelmingly white British (and even then, even Birmingham was 96.4% British and Bradford was 95% British)** .

.

"I'm in my 60s and grew up in the 1980s under Thatcher where we (myself and my friends/cohort) were extremely politicised - we marched for miners, "

I'm very likely a very similar age to yourself. The first time I voted was in the 1983 general election and I voted Conservative. I've voted at every election since then, I do believe that it is important to vote.

I remember back then speaking to a couple of girls who were slightly older than me who had been at the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp. We had quite a spirited debate and eventually agreed to disagree.

I'd just point out that just because a person disagrees with your politics or your point of view that does not mean that they are "racist, right wing bigots who vote Reform and hate 'foreigners' "

[EDIT]

Curiously, the areas with the absolute highest percentage of foreigners were Huntingdon, Mildenhall and Hunstanton. With around 25% of the population being born abroad.

Although, in these cases this was down to the local US air force bases which had thousands of US servicemen. Although, they were just here as expats rather than immigrants.

I’m nearly 65, I’d think you were my daughter, were it not that she is as concerned about immigration as I am.

Neither of us have ever watched GB news. But since it started promoting the nonsense that some men are women, we’ve become a lot more sceptical of anything written in the Guardian.

Those of you getting your news from the Guardian and the BBC need to read more widely, you are dangerously uninformed.

I think it’s perfectly possible to not go with the guardian flow either ( who lefts face it are a commercial organisation as much as the others but just after the green vote these days these days rather than Reform/Tory) but not actively be thinking the sun shines out Farages arse and he’s talking ‘common sense’ - he isn’t, he’s got zero economic sense in terms of international trade that isn’t coming from dodgy activity , but he knows what bells to pull and what disingenuous information to push via his very well lined coffers to keep many pissed off people perpetually agitated. Whilst I don’t think the greens are the answer nor do I think the pseudo Nazis are either. Germany of course is having identical issues- caused partly by a previous government who hedged all their bets alongside Russia alongside bizzarley an insanely lenient immigration policy due to falling birth rate and it has now bitten them on the arse - because they have the Russia problem plus Trumps tariffs problem and in a country that still makes ‘a lot’ of stuff - it’s hitting the average worker and businesses , but instead of reflecting why this is so , people think ‘ooh look the AFD’ Germany 1st stuff - Deutschland uber alles. It’s looking for quick domestic fixes for what are mainly international issues at the moment -slightly different situation here of course .

My 80+ mum is like this but I have many friends and neighbours their 60s who are open minded and chill, but at 80 I just ignore her but at 60 I’d have to say something.

How the heck did they manage that?Labour came to power in the July 24 election. The highest net migration was 944,000 for the 12 months ending March 23 - when the Conservatives were in power. In contrast, after Non-EU and student visa eligibility was tightened up and reduced, net migration dropped 82% to 171,000 in Labour's first year. In the same period, small boat arrivals were cut by 40%.

Where on earth do you get your utterly bonkers disinformation from? Likely the same place as the paramilitary balaclava gangs are getting theirs - where were they during the Tory peak years of both net migration and small boat arrivals?
It's sad that you have no idea that you're patriotic emotions are being stirred up, exploited and financed by foreign billionaires.

Absolutely - I have no idea if some people are actually misinformation shitstirrers or are just supremely poorly informed and believe any old crap put in front of them by mainstream media with an agenda- am I massively ‘leftist’ nope and not hugely woke either - very much in the middle , but I do know when people are being fed a boatload of half truths funded by greedy dogma driven billionaires to keep them agitated and focussing on certain things - it’s playing out very badly for Trump though ( apart from his bank account) as people are realising it was all bullshit- don’t forget that by now it should all be sunlit uplands post Brexit, money flooding in, everything cheaper, people desparate to invest here - ‘we’ hold all the cards - no we didn’t and never did -

Ah yes sorry you are correct. Labour came into power in Summer 2024. It just feels like it was 10 years ago, it's been so dreadful.

Tbh I'm pretty centrist. Or was, until rabid lefties (telling us for eg that men who have raped babies are women), moved the Overton window so far to the left, centrists became 'right'.

A Labour gvt (Blair) opened the doors originally, then 2023-2024-2025 have seen the highest levels of net migration since records began. Also under a Labour gvt.

In the year ending June 2023 - the UK population grew by nearly one million. All of which was net migration. That was under the Labour gvt.

I don't accept their racist views any more than I did earlier in the thread, in spite of some people on this thread clearly harbouring even more offensive views.

By the way, Where's your tolerance for those grieving their once happy, tolerant parents that have now beenradicalised by GB News and Facebook?

Do you somehow prefer the parents to live in misery, hatred and fear of those of a different skin colour?

Edited

Once again, @skygroundsky , you're in a world of your own. I don't need to tolerate people I don't know. Why should I want people to 'live in misery, hatred and fear of those of a different skin colour?'
These things are not part of me , any more than being racially prejudiced is. It's all in your head.

😂I should hope so. From approx 1 million in 1 year, it should indeed be reducing. Continues to fall but is still much higher than pre 2022. Massage the stats all you like.

No need to massage the stats, they speak for themselves in updating and completing the picture… (you didn't give!).

Our country has rapidly changed beyond recognition and unspeakable atrocities occur on a weekly basis and they have the gall to be concerned about that? How dare they!

I am not saying your parents are like this but this couple is a very extreme example of where this kind of attitude can end up when unchallenged. Though these people surely must have been horrible their entire lives.

You see what you want to see. You dont hear the people speaking English as that isnt on your radar, all you hear are people speaking other languages because it buys into your beliefs.

Confirmation bias at its finest.

ETA and as a PP said, without immigration the NHS would be an even worse state. Eldest DD is an ODP in the NHS, and she has said many times that people going back to Europe thanks to Brexit has done far more damage to the NHS than people like you and Nigel would like to admit.

Edited

Not at all. I’m an open minded person who accepts people from all backgrounds and race. I have no issue in people coming to the uk to work and contribute to the economy and society in a positive way.

I think you’ll find what people object to and complain about is the sheer levels of non English speaking people who are not here to contribute. People with English as a first language are actually becoming the minority in some areas. I challenge you to walk through one of these areas alone and feel safe. The cultural differences, especially the difference in attitude towards women is immense. This is something I’ve witnessed first hand btw

I wonder if the negativity is actually an unconscious process of preparing for permanent exit from the world, 🙃. As in, "the way things are going, I'm better off out of it all now"...

Very much so I think.

Divinedownload · 20/09/2026 19:58

They’re probably just beginning to see reality for what it is. The country is shit and gone to the dogs and yes we have a serious immigration problem.

Seashorewaves · 20/09/2026 19:53

It's not only older people who are right wing and support Farage etc. I know middle aged (40s) people who do. Most people you see in protests are middle-aged. Often older people are still left leaning.
Becoming negative or insular is a different thing.

CornerShoes · 20/09/2026 19:24

I had not realised so many people are watching GBN. Do figures show it’s mainly the older generation? I have never seen it so I can’t comment on its content. I don’t know anybody who watches it either. But I guess we are all influenced by what we watch and read, whether that’s the BBC, the Guardian, the Mail or GBN. Esp if we are lacking other competing influences in our lives.

anyolddinosaur · 20/09/2026 19:17

The parents apparently watch GB news all day and are therefore living in a little bubble - the children spend all day on social media where their bigoted views are reinforce by their little bubble. But the children are too bigoted to appreciate the irony. 😂😂😂

But there's no virtue signalling points there.

I honestly can't be bothered to respond to everyone bashing those agreeing with the OP and spouting/defending obnoxious views on this thread, only to say that they just prove the OPs point. To the point where it's comical.

These responses on every bloody page ARE the insufferable bores ranting about "rights for whites", expressing anti-muslim sentiment, endless talk about small boats / immigration (despite being the ones who voted for Brexit which caused a huge influx), social cohesion was better when it was "all white", life was golden in the 1970s..... "We fought the war and wish that we hadn't now that there are more minorities around" FFS.

just imagine having these people for parents! I mean I thought my parents had some obnoxious views, but you lot take the biscuit!

It sounds that something has been achieved if you are starting to have some tolerance for your parents.
