AIBU to find this name offensive?

Putting the words "bat" and "shit" together is extremely offensive to the bat community. I wish to complain on their behalf.....

My children have been badgering me for ‘blind bags’ since seeing them in toy shops aged around 3. They’re teens now.

It’s when you bake a pie case without the filling. Normally you would put special (non edible) baking balls in the case.

I don't understand how the mere use of the word - in a context that is not at all negative - is offensive just because one among its several usages relates to a disability. People with disabilities aren't seeking to lay exclusive claim to commonly used words. Why would they?

And where would it stop? Is it offensive to talk about disabling a burglar alarm? Or to call a book cerebral? Or to use the word 'down' to name little soft feathers?

Or perhaps the many uses of 'blind' are only offensive because they usually invoke a similar meaning to that which is present in the disability term (not being able to see something)? But isn't that the same as implying a taboo around the very idea of blindness, a taboo so strong that we aren't meant ever to hint at it accidentally in our language use? That feels very last century.

And yet someone else looking for something to be offended by... Yawn.

I agree that if I were their marketing team I’d have chosen another word, but I find it hard to believe that this would be classed as offensive by many people.

I'm partially sighted too and don't like it. Not offended by it though

Just asked my mum, who is blind, and she doesn’t like the name and wouldn’t buy a ‘blind box’ product. I am partially sighted and feel the same.

Blind date - a term still used, and not offensive imo

Why isn't black sheep ok? It means you stand out as different in an homogenous group where to do so can be a disadvantage. Unless you're trying to say the expression really means 'black person' and it's being used as a racist insult?!

Of course you can, and should, get offended by a word. Or rather, not a word, but the connotations it has. Think of words associated with racism as a prime example. Additionally, language evolves and changes so what wasn't offensive 50 years ago is now. And I'm sure in 50 years people will look back aghast. In this instance, I'm personally not offended, but I accept some people might be. Fair play. I'm not offended that they are offended.

The term 'blind box' has been around since 2006 to refer to a sealed package with mystery contents. Perhaps you missed the proliferation of them in the shops in the last few years.

B) a busybody who has taken up offence of behalf of the visually impaired community?
