A blind or visually impaired person would know not to exclude other blind or visually impaired people from understanding their post by posting an image with no alt-text. 😉

All the blind & visually impaired people will be struggling to understand what OP is talking about.

Alt-text is added to images so screen read software can tell a blind or visually impaired person what the image shows.

Mumsnet does not currently have an alt-text function but a description can be added to the post.

Example Alt - text for my image :

[Image shows a small pale cream coloured Labrador- retriever cross puppy wearing a blue collar with the words guide dogs and the guide dogs association logo ]

I cam understand what you’re saying and how language can be inappropriate. Look at development- slave and master for example. Its good to call out the language but not only m&s.

Some people are visually impaired & some are blind. They are both disabilities but not the same thing.

If you were genuinely concerned about blind & visually impaired people on here you would have included alt-text on your image. 😉

You can use the word 'blind' to mean other things as long as it's not derogatory. Same as saying to a blind person 'do you see what I mean?' Neither are discriminatory or exclude blind & visually impaired people.

But posting pictures with no alt-text excludes blind & visually impaired people from understanding your post 😉

What offends me is having to buy loads in order to get the one that I actually want. This is unusual in that they don't usually have the words on them. You just find out when you open one and get only one, then you'll know what it is.

But seriously, why is it so offensive? Is describing stuff offensive? Like "a small bag", well I'm small so should I go off my rocker now? Because you're discriminating between small and big things or whatnot.

It’s not necessarily about the language used, it’s about the words used on the packaging itself.

I think it sounds quite American but I’ve no idea why . I do think it’s odd and I would not automatically think it’s a mystery box .

What about double blind medical trials? Are these offensive too? What if they're researching something that could assist people with sight issues? Sort of like the blind (trial) saving the blind,

A blind bend, for example, is a correct use of the word that does not refer to blindness as a disability, but simply a human being’s inability to see around it. The same applies here. No one (blind or otherwise) can see inside the box before purchase.

Blind boxes are all over the place for things these days, toys, figurines, anything collectible really. I assume it's an Instagram thingummybob. I'm not sure how it can conceivably be construed as offensive. Blind can mean a person who is unable to see but it also means unseen. So when you buy a blind box, it means you are taking pot luck as to which figurine you are going to get. It's also a noun, an adjective, a verb and an adverb... So many uses, it is NOT offensive.

And I say that as someone who has just been diagnosed with an eye problem that means I am very likely to be going blind at some point.

I think Blind Box is the more commonly used term than Blind Bag (although obviously it’s the same concept).

I think the phenomenon has taken off in popularity more recently, but it is definitely the established term for a mystery box (which would be the other common thing to call
this).

I've never heard it and I've been around since Dick's days.
My gc have mystery bags or surprise bags. Never heard of a blind bag.
That's not to say I don't believe it's used.
Maybe some people just use more selective language.
