Unbalanced Inheritance Division

I'll keep it brief, my parents both died some time ago, and I can't get over this.

The estate was split with 20% going to me and 80% to my sister. She gets £160k I get £40k.

Both about the same age, both been a part of the family equally, she is wealthier than me by a large margin.

I want to cut all ties as she refuses to balance out the amounts, even a 60:40 split.

We're it the other way round I would be uncomfortable with the settlements and would rectify it, she won't.

AIBU?

I had the same One brother and I got20% each of the house. The other brother got60% plus all money belongings etc. So be it. Hadn't affected our relationship

ThatCyanCat · 17/09/2026 16:39

Can't believe I missed that one parent had risen from the dead. Well spotted, guys.

I guess at least we have the answer to the question of what was going on, though. Someone was bored. This doesn't seem like the most productive hobby, though.

YellowScarfRupert · 17/09/2026 16:34

How would you feel of your children fought over your last Will and went against what you wanted?

JHound · 17/09/2026 16:31

Stilson · 17/09/2026 14:05

So my partner has suggested I clarify a few points, which is why I'm adding this post.

My sister and I have 2 kids each, roughly the same age, I believe they all have a good relationship with the remaining Parent/Grandparent.

How do I know I would not allow this to happen if the situation was reversed, a few years ago whilst visiting they told me they were amending their will.

I thought maybe a charity donation.

No, they were going to alter the will and leave me as the sole benefactor, I have no idea what my sister had said or done, maybe cut her potatoes with a knife instead of a fork, who knows!

After a few milliseconds of thinking how that would change my life, I told them in no uncertain terms I would not allow that to happen, did not want it to happen or be okay with it.

After a bit of back and forth they agreed to a 60:40 split in my favour, I was still uncomfortable with this but they would not budge.

The reason I concluded for disagreement.

  1. I am not altruistic and quite generous, my partner says its one of my Green Flags I did not like this or was okay with it.
  1. I believe in fairness wherever possible, and although my sister might not need it her children might.

3, I would have to face up to her forever, and I thought it would destroy our relationship.

As as parent you can punish your kids if they do wrong and it doesn’t last long, a grounding, no TV, chores for a week, you can patch things up and move on.

But to do this as a punishment over and above what the perceived wrong is, is not right and it lasts a lifetime!

Many many thanks for all the comments. :-)

Both parents died but now one is alive.

Somebody was bored.

SeptemberRains · 15/09/2026 09:35

My father died many years ago, my mother died 10 years ago.
In her will my youngest brother got half of her estate, the remaining 5 siblings shared the other half - so he got 50% and we got 10%.
None of us fell out over it, we all are on very good terms and love each other.
It's completely up to you how you want to react.

That’s such a baffling thing for them to do. And you have no explanation of rationale for why they did it that way?

JHound · 17/09/2026 16:26

I understand your annoyance but there appears to be something missing given the huge imbalance. But it was your parents money and this is what they decided.

You can choose to end your relationship but you can’t force her to give you more money.

Boomer55 · 17/09/2026 16:15

It won’t affect the finances, but if you want to cut ties, you can.

Pingsung · 17/09/2026 16:07

How has one of your parents has been raised from the dead?

mrsm43s · 17/09/2026 15:44

So the reason was that your parents used money as control. You were OK to go with a 60:40 split in your favour, but upset now it's swung into your sisters favour.

(If I was you sister and knew that you'd agreed to the previous version of the will split in your favour, I'd probably be disinclined to even out the amounts - what goes around comes around, I'd still be smarting from you having previously agreed the split in your favour).

If it helps give you peace, you parent(s) have treated you and your sister both badly. I don't think this is about them favouring one sibling over the other, just being manipulative with you both.

You've got to accept that your sister isn't necessarily being unreasonable in keeping what was willed to her, especially since you were previously happy to have more when willed to you. (Why on earth didn't you have the conversation with your sister about splitting evenly regardless of the will when you first found out your parents wanted to split unevenly in your favour if you really think it should have been evenly split?)

Imdunfer · 17/09/2026 15:31

Nothingfallingdowntoday · 17/09/2026 14:28

Your first post refer to both parents being deceased. The last post suggests that one is living. Which is it? I do think relevant as if you’ve inherited from one surely you can ask the other for an answer.

There is something odd about this thread.

This. Both dead "some time ago" in post 1, yet today all 4 kids have a good relationship with "the remaining grandparent".

weeat · 17/09/2026 15:15

So, there’s your answer. Your parents have form for using money as a controlling tool, you were kind and upfront about not wanting to benefit from an uneven split. Your sister has inherited your parent’s views around money. When all is said and done recognise your parents warped views surrounding money, and the control they enjoyed wielding and recognise your sisters weakness. Live your life, be free, dont look back!

No idea about the reason for anything these wildly mercurial parents did? I call BS.

ThatCyanCat · 17/09/2026 14:09

So your parents initially talked about leaving it all to you and didn't tell you the reason? And you didn't push to find out? Surely you wondered? Did you have any idea?

I made three posts in this thread, all of them polite and respectful stating my view. Others also gave the same views. But for some reason, you ignored others giving the same (completely fair and valid) viewpoint that I did, yet thought it necessary to launch into an unjustified personal attack on me (which MN have now removed).

You behaved badly. At least have the balls to own it and apologise.

ViciousCurrentBun · 16/09/2026 16:41

My Mother had a clear favourite child, some of us used to discuss it, there were six of us. When she died she left everything to her. She didn’t want to share. I tackled it directly with her. I said I did not want a share but could she not give something to the other 4. My siblings are not well off, one was seriously disabled and the others though not disabled had ongoing health issues, compounded my hard physical NMW jobs. She refused. We all cut her off, two of us had expected this will, the others were devastated. I remember one of my poor sisters crying she just wanted Mum to treat us all the same once. My very disabled brother did everything for our Mother, his wife had been a nurse so also did huge amounts for her. If it was a who helped the most those two should have had the vast majority.

FIL also left all his money to SIL, clearly his favourite. She has said she will make good one day but she can’t currently. It’s very complicated but who knows. She doesn’t have to. Its the fact she has contemplated it that has made me think she is a better person than my sister.

All I said was that I didn’t have any patience with your perspective. That’s not particularly rude, and it is factual.

You made derogatory and unfounded accusations about OP’s motivations in a distressing circumstance and then had the affrontery to accuse other people of rudeness.

If you don’t like your views being criticised then take care to ensure they are enlightened and compassionate.

I said nothing derogatory, I simply have a different, but equally valid, viewpoint to you. Your response was extremely rude, you are very much minimising, as you know. It was a pointed personal attack accusing me of posting "twaddle" amongst other things, hence why it was removed.

By all means, have your own opinions, but you need to recognise that they don't trump other people's views and you need to stay polite and respectful in your responses.

For anyone wondering what this is about, please do review my posts on this thread and see of you can find what riled this poster to feel the need to launch an attack on me. It beats me!

mrsm43s · 16/09/2026 12:51

Oh dear! I was, fairly and reasonably expressing my views (and clearly explaining my rationale). You, on the other hand were rude and unpleasant, and seem to be coming from the place that only your opinion counts, which really isn't how discussion forums work. I called you out openly on your rudeness, others must have felt your rudeness was worth reporting, and presumably MN agreed since your post was removed.

I wasn’t rude, merely impatient and I despise posters who report over trifles.

Meanwhile you’re perfectly comfortable being rude to the OP implying her position is all about money rather than hurt and a deep sense of betrayal.

This is not worth my time.

Dear All.

This thread blew up, thank you for all the comments.

This will be my last post.

I reiterate I know of no reason the split in the will is like this. I asked my DS to rectify the situation gently without threats.

For my sanity and to prevent unwanted feelings of resentment or jealousy I will gently disengage.

If asked in the future why, I will respond honestly but I'm not going to make a big thing of it.

I will instead put my energies and focus into my projects and hobbies that I enjoy.

Thanks again for all the comments wether, positive, negative, supportive or not, all were read.

Stay safe.

Good luck OP. I understand how devastating this must be for you.

Focus on the people who care about you.

Trust me, it's not about money.

Years later still struggling.

It's one of the worst hurts.

It's not all about the money.

But the money makes some contribution to peoples feelings definitely.

If the OP was absolutely minted it would take some of the sting out of the situation, while maybe also providing some justification as to why the split was the way it was.
