I met the most amazing man. Gentle, calm, sweet. My nervous system felt safe around him. After a few months I raised that he wasn’t very affectionate/sexual and I am, and it was making me feel a bit unwanted. I felt like a friend more than a partner. I wanted us to discuss it. He’s never had a relationship before (he’s 35) and is very reserved. He said he didn’t know how to show more affection in a way that felt natural to him.

we ended up agreeing to breakup. The next day I went on holiday with my kids. We didn’t talk for a few days. I realised I missed him and was being stupid, I had the most perfect man and surely love is more important than having more affection? So I messaged him to see if we could talk.

the next couple of weeks was back and forth but we arranged to meet and talk. I found his messages distant and cold but he is very reserved so that’s probably not how he meant to come across. At times I got annoyed and upset and sent long paragraphs like an idiot. He told me he wanted to fix it, that he cared about me etc.

it’s been a month since the initial split. But only a week since we were supposed to meet and talk. we didn’t meet because we ended up almost arguing over how he was coming across as unbothered. He said he felt it was best to end the relationship.

the last week I’ve been trying to fix it, suggesting to meet, explaining how I feel, giving him space, and he has now said he doesn’t think we can pick up where we left off.

theres 100% not another woman, he’s not the type. I’m his first ever girlfriend, the only thing I’m sure of is that there’s no other woman.

this is gonna be the nice guy I should’ve stayed with isn’t it?

he said as time went on he realised it couldn’t be fixed because of the way it was handled, he said he’d handled it badly and regretted it. He knows how hurt I am. The initial problem of affection is pretty much not an issue is it, it’s now how unbothered he comes across.

im heartbroken. His last message was simply “that’s a sweet message. But I don’t think we can pick up where we left off, I’m sorry.”.

ive asked why. He hasn’t replied.

im utterly devastated. If we had actually talked I’m sure it could have been resolved.

im a talker, i will talk and talk until its fixed. He’s more reserved and avoids conflict.

I get anxious with the silence so rush to fill it.

130am and can’t sleep as anxious about what he’ll say next. I told him in my message that I’d missed him etc, I didn’t get any reply to that bit. If he told me his feelings had gone it would hurt but at least I’d know

You will meet somebody more suitable OP unusual that he never had a girlfriend until 35 years old. He sounds very shy and unsure of himself

blondeboobshell · 16/09/2026 09:08

You are not compatible. You are creating a version of what you r relationship could be in your head but that isn’t actually the reality.
Move on and try to work on your esteem, if you can be happy with yourself you won’t feel the need to compromise yourself going forward

CocksBolingey · 16/09/2026 02:25

His last message was simply “that’s a sweet message. But I don’t think we can pick up where we left off, I’m sorry.”

There’s your answer ⬆️
You aren’t heartbroken, you’re just upset for what you wanted the relationship to be, not for what it actually was, because that wasn’t making you happy either. His responses should show you that he’s not invested. Don’t chase him - simply move on.
He sounds like a bit of a drip in all honesty anyway! Don’t settle.

lavendersweetly · 16/09/2026 02:11

How are there so many people on here making disparaging and judgemental comments about a man that they don't know 😂There's nothing wrong with someone being a virgin whatsoever at any age and to say otherwise is harsh and unkind.
I would also argue that there's nothing wrong with someone not being particularly interested in sex, some people are asexual or just have low sex drives? I don't see how that could possibly be a red flag or something to be worried about?! But that's just my own opinion.

OP, please be gentle with yourself about this :) It's totally normal to end a relationship with someone but to then have second thoughts afterwards- you're a human and it's okay to be unsure. I've gone through the exact same situation with both of my previous relationships. even my first "partner" who was 5 years my senior... when I was 17.
Ultimately, you've told us that you feel that you were sexually incompatible, or that the relationship wasn't serving your emotional/physical needs which is also okay!
You've reached out to him in an attempt to reconcile and he has since made it clear that he doesn't feel able to. I know it hurts, but you've now got the answers and clarity you need. I'd encourage you to give yourself a bit of time to heal from this situation, and then move forward in a positive way.

Let me know if you need a chat sometime 💕

Thanks everyone. Today he told me the issue is he has (in the space of 2 weeks) changed his mind about kids (he now wants them) and a dog (wants one, I’m allergic) and that our interests are too different (they’re not) so it isn’t fixable.

he was single and a virgin when I met him at 34, he turned 35 a few months later.

the sex wasn’t so much the issue, more the affection. I’m tactile and he’s reserved.

but seemingly the issue was then “how he handled the breakup” according to him, and now kids/dog.

i have stopped messaging him… but it does hurt. I really did have feelings for him.

A single virgin has no sense of who they are romantically and sexually. But honestly, the fact that he’s reserved when it comes to affection and he was still a virgin at 34, suggests to me that he could even be somewhere on the asexual spectrum. I think there are an awful lot of signs here that he was never the right one for you.

You are right to stop messaging him. If you continue that it really does become harassment and you seem unhinged. It’s awful to lose something you thought had a future in it, but the sooner you allow yourself to move on from this the better.

AlgaeDreams · 16/09/2026 01:30

Forget about kids, dogs and allergies. It's wasn't working! You both deserve to be happy, but it won't be with each other.

AlgaeDreams · 16/09/2026 01:22

It never worked. It never will work. He's done the right thing. Nobody's fault, you're incompatible. It certainly shouldn't be that hard work early days.
Move on.

Thecatspantaloons · 16/09/2026 01:01

My pride could never...🫣 I wish I had your fortitude OP, I'll give you that.

Tuesdayschild50 · 15/09/2026 23:47

He is who he is... be with someone you are in tune with.. I know endings hurt and when hurting we forget what made us feel unhappy..
Feel the hurt let him go dust yourself off spend time being single you time.. then you'll meet the right match for you x

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/09/2026 22:54

Oh, OP.

He. Is. Not. Interested.

You are far too intense and insistent that this guy is right for you. He has told you he doesn't want a relationship with you. Focus on your kids and on finding some peace with yourself.

Was he ever physiaclly interested in you? how was the sex? did it change at all? from how you have described your relationship it seems you were incompatible physically and sexually . Intimacy was a problem just a few months in.
He clearly doesnt want to continue the relationship and i think you should respect that.

Fidgety31 · 15/09/2026 18:43

You want him to be something he is not .

you cannot change him .

its over . Move on . Leave him be .

Learning to sit cimfortably with silence is a skill to be learnt, I'm not talking about sulking, aggressive silence, just a comfortable silence between 2 people. I'm content to sit in silence every afternoon, reading while Dh is doing his own thing, if someone was constantly talking and looking for interaction it would really annoy me.

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 15/09/2026 17:06

I’ve also voted YABU because he’s just not right for you. You clearly have a lot to give and need a strong sense of connection with someone. You won’t get that with him and the problem will just continue (see how he’s already dealing with everything).

I know it’s painful but you need to move on.

MrsKiplingsSauna · 15/09/2026 16:51

Single at 35 is a big red flag.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 15/09/2026 11:47

How could you have been satisfied with a sexless relationship?

You weren't compatible with this man.
If you were his first girlfriend and he's 35 and not interested in sex, he's probably gay anyway.

randomchap · 15/09/2026 11:41

cauliflowercheesey · 15/09/2026 09:49

If he’s going to give up that quickly then it wasn’t a resilient relationship, and if it didn't end over this, then it would have ended over something else.

Sounds like the guy can’t take feedback, has emotional issues about criticism and fear of rejection, so can’t let himself be vulnerable to that. So one sting and he’s shut the door.

It was inevitable really. His need to protect his own ego was stronger than his feelings for you. And you can’t have a partner that you can’t discuss problems with honestly and have to tread on eggshells around. It’s sad, but it’s his loss. You will find somebody else x He may never be able to.

Edited

Yes, it's definitely the blokes fault. Nothing to do with the fundamental differences between the two. It's the man's fault.

It's not meant to be this difficult. You are not a good match, and it's over.
Move on

How can you call him 'the most perfect man'? He didn't show you any affection and didn't want sex with you. How is that perfect?
Also he is 35 and never had a relationship before?
Leave him alone OP, he has made it clear that this is over.

Cyclebabble · 15/09/2026 09:22

He may be a perfectly decent man, but he has concluded that he does not want a relationship with you. You do come across as very intense in your post and I can understand why he might see this as a red flag early on in a relationship. Please respect his decision and consider if there is anything you can learn from what has happened here.

randomchap · 15/09/2026 09:17

Even if you did get back together, the fundamental issue of how he expresses emotion compared to how you want him to is not going to go away.

Find someone else who can match your energy/emotional needs

Move on, for both your sakes

momager22 · 15/09/2026 09:13

Sorry op but I agree with the others. He wasn’t meeting your needs so he’s not the perfect guy and he’s told you multiple times that it’s over.
If you carry on trying to pursue him you’ll look a bit unhinged.
